RACTI’s Brief Description The Research Academic Computer Technology Institute (Research Academic CTI) is an non profit research and developing organization supervised by the Ministry of National Education & Religious Affairs.

The RA CTI's objectives are defined as follows:

To conduct basic and applied research in hardware and software technology, networks, and the Information Society's socioeconomic impact

To design and develop products and services

To support all kinds of ICT education and training in relation to the Information Society

To develop technology and transfer know-how

To provide consultancy, design and administrative services concerning the Information Society to the Ministry of National Education & Religious Affairs and to the public sector in general, to natural and legal entities and social institutions

RACTI is located in a modern building inside the University Patras Campus. It is equipped with modern computing and technical infrastructure, total organisational constitution and appreciable personnel constituted of internationally recognized scientists.

The organization’s financing comes 50% from the research, 35% from national resources and 15% from the private sector.

The personnel constitute of 25% faculty members and experienced researchers, 12% postgraduate scientists and 10% professionals of information technology sectors.

NTS Brief Description Networking Technologies Sector (NTS) was founded in January 1999, and is one of the 8 RACTI’s Information Society sectors. NTS field of expertise is the design and implementation of network structures, telematic services and grid technologies.

Through NTS's involvement in research and development of various pioneering projects, NTS has a major role in the development of network technology and telematic services. Therefore, NTS serves a substantial role in shaping the future policy of the network technology and services in Greece.

The activities of the Sector include:

• Planning, development and management of big scale broadband networks

• Planning, development and operation of basic and advanced telematic services and Internet applications

• Support and training of Internet services users

• Planning, development and operation of grid technologies

• Provision of technical advisor services on issues concerning planning and implementation of network infrastructures and services

• Research in the above scientific fields

Through its many years attendance in innovative research and development projects, N.T.S. has gained a high level of knowledge and it has an important role in the development of the networking technologies and telematic services in our country.

Aim of the project is the exploitation - to profit of the schools - of infrastructures of broadband access that will be manufactured by projects of Municipalities and local authorities in the frames of invitations 93 and 105 CSF. By the wide use of broadband infrastructures the access speed of schools will be increased so that the complete exploitation is achieved of advanced services of GSN from the Greek schools. The project includes:

• Broadband access upgrade of 527 educational and administrative units in the region of responsibility of RACTI (sub-project 1).

• Creation of islands of wireless local access of 13 educational and administrative units in the region of responsibility of RACTI (sub-project 2).

• Broadband upgrade of distribution network of GSN for which will be created 1536 gates of interconnection of hyper-high speed (Gpbs) (sub-project 3).

In the frames of the project, planning, growth and pilot application of innovative system for the management calculating and network systems of Public Administration (pilot user) has been done. It has been developed a completed solution based on the beginnings of free open software (F.O.S.S.). With use of silent program, that functions as local agent, removed stations of work are rendered administratable and given the possibility in the administrator to execute recordings of available material and software, removed control of desktop, distribution of software and follow-up of network and movement.

By implementing the project the smooth and continuous operation of the Greek School Network for 2007 is supported. The Greek Schools' Network (GSN - www.sch.gr) is the educational intranet of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs (www.ypepth.gr), which interlinks all schools and provides basic and advanced telematic services. Thus, it contributes to the creation of a new generation of educational communities, which takes advantage of the new Informatics' and Communication Technologies in the educational procedure.

The current design and implementation of the Greek Schools Network focuses in providing useful services to all members of the basic and middle education community, fulfilling among others the following goals:

• Access to telecommunication and informatics services

• Access to digitized educational material

• Distance learning, e-learning

• Encourage collaboration

• Information and opinion exchange

• Conduct of thematic discussions, seminars, lectures, etc.

• Access to digital library services

• Communication and Cooperation of all educational degrees

• Communication with European educa-tional networks

• Facilitate complimentary educational programs

Through the natural object of the project and via the following tasks, the following will be implementing:

The project’s object is informing, sensitization and training of Secondary Education teachers for the role that the Internet services can play in the educational process. It constitutes a self-existent department of a composed frame of Greek School Network projects, that aims in the continuous training of Secondary Education teachers regarding to offered GSN services and in the growth/upgrade/extension of last ones by the GSN so as to they contribute in the adoption of updated educational practices by the teachers. The project focuses in the Prefectures Aitoloakarnania, Arkadia, Achaia, Zakynthos, Ilia, Kefallinia, Lakonia, Messinia and Fokida. The project has been implemented in the following phases:

• Implementation of sensitization, information and briefing actions of secondary education schools that belong in the geographic region of RACTI’s responsibility with regard to the educational exploitation of telematic services of the Greek School Network.

The project concerned in the planning, implementation and pilot operation of Greek School Network for the Education, which interconnects all the schools and administrative units of Secondary Education (roughly 4000 points). The network evolved existing infrastructure and services that have been developed in the frames of the horizontal action for the Third degree Education, the horizontal action for the Secondary Education (“Odyssey”, Lyceum) and the

Part of the actions infrastructure supported by the Greek School Network (EDUnet), which constitutes the access network for the First degree and Secondary Education as well as the administration network of Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs. The project has been implemented by two sub-projects:

• Technical co-ordination and technical supervision of GSN network infrastructures development- Development and support of advanced telematic services for the educational community of secondary education

• Support of continuous and smooth operation of infrastructure for the disposal of digital content in the final users

EDUnet offered and it continues offering a line from important profits in the educational community such as:

• Import of scale technologies in network level, and in user’s services level

• Interconnection of members of educational community to each other and to the Internet

• Provision of network services so as to meet the needs of the educational community.

The project concerned in the elaboration of studies on the development and operation of network infrastructure and telematic services for meeting teachers’ needs and its administrative units. Networking Technologies Sector implemented, inter alia, the project of recording the utilities of infrastructures and services, the needs of final users. In these frames quantification of sizes, dimensioning of network, recording of experience of similar work and planning of network solution has been implemented.

The project’s object has been the supply and the installation of network equipment and infrastructures for the Greek School Network. Concretely the project concerned:

• In the enrichment and in the upgrade of the GSN distribution network, which is constituted by 51 points of presence (nodes) in the, equal in number, capitals of prefectures of the country.

• In the implementation of the access network of Educational Supporting Units of Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs in the GSN.

• In the wireless interconnection of school units of Secondary education in the region of RACTI’s responsibility and concretely in the urban group of Kalamata.

• In the improvement of operation of the GSN’s Users Support Service (HelpDesk).

Goal of the project has been the upgrade and support of GSN infrastructures in order to make the interconnection First degree education schools possible without phenomena of saturation and lack of availability in the remainder users.

Advanced telematic services for the Primary Education: Development and Support of Advanced Telematic Services for the educational units of the Primary Education in Western Greece

The project aims to develop, operate and support advanced telematic services, so as to allow access in educational material for the needs of the First degree Education. The project concerns also the interconnection of First degree Education Schools with Greek School Network (GSN), the users support, as well as the provision of technical support services for the development of internal networks in First degree educational and administrative units of RACTI’s responsibility region. (Prefectures Αιtoloakarnania, Arkadia, Achaia, Zakynthos, Ilia, Kefallinia, Lakonia, Messinia and Fokida). The project has been implemented in the following phases:

• Provision of technical support services for the development of internal networks in school and administrative units of first degree education of RACTI’s responsibility region

• Development and operation of advanced telematic services for the first degree education

• Provision and support service of advanced telematic services in the final users of first degree educational community in the RACTI’s responsibility region

• Educational exploitation actions of provided telematic services in the first degree education schools of RACTI’s responsibility region

• Technical co-ordination - follow-up of work of/Study of viability and devolvement planning

Equipment and Networking in the Primary Education and Support Infrastructures of the schools in the Western Greece Region

In the frames of the project, 653 First degree schools, Kindergartens and Administrative units of first degree education of Arkadia, Achaia, Zakynthos, Ilia, Kefallinia, Lakonia and Messinia prefectures, have been equipped with basic calculating equipment, network equipment and software applications of office automation. To 108 by the 653 units internal networking has been developed in more areas, so as to offer an ability of wider networking.

Furthermore, in the frames of the project the equipment in the Information and New Technologies Centers has been supplied and installed. The Centers have been set up by the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs in each prefecture (and more specifically the prefectures Aitoloakarnania, Arkadia, Achaia, Zakynthos, Ilia, Kefallinia, Lakonia, Messinia, Fokida). Also the essential equipment for the operation of a HelpDesk from the Implementation Institution (RACTI) has been supplied and installed, too. Concretely the project included:

• Supply of calculating equipment, hardware, software and tools for the 9 Information and New Technologies Centers and the HelpDesk that RACTI will function

• Supply and installation of essential furnitures for the Technical Personnel that will provide the technical support

• Area Configuration for the Help Desk accommodation,

• Supply and installation of applications software for the operation of central informative systems for the provision and co-ordination of Technical Support services

During the project’s implementation the integration of further computing systems in the basic HellasGrid core will be examined, such as computing nodes of high specifications and exploitation of surplus interconnected personal computers resources - desktop Grids. Such type energies obviously do not aim to substitute the computing infrastructures, that are dedicated in Grid. On the contrary the implementation of Desktop Grids, will function complementarily to the central infrastructures, adding more value with minimal cost. According to the conclusions of studies, two at least infrastructure completion pilot actions will be selected and implemented, from which the one will concern existing computing nodes, and the other will concern desktop Grids. As far as the existing calculating nodes are concerned, the code (porting) of the existing intermediary software in their operational systems, such as HP-UX, AIX, Solaris, etc. will be transferred.

This project concerns the study and operation of nodes for computing systems management and operation and storage for the support of continuous operation of HellasGrid in a daily base. The schools are called to collaborate on issues with recognized pedagogical value, trying wider exploitation of ICT, in the pedagogic process. During the first year (2004-2005), NTS participated as a partner of the Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs, in the Greek NSS in subjects that concern teachers briefing and support through informative events, the implementation of informative material, the development of a website (http://etwinning.sch.gr), the organization of a support office and the development of a software for monitoring and evaluating the action.

This project is part of a bigger project with objective the designing and development of a completed access system for the combined benefit of telephony services and data via Internet, where the main and exigent operations will be materialised in special circuit of data analysis as well as in special circuit of signal (DSP) analysis so that good quality of service to be provided. RACTI’s NTS undertook the analysis of requirements and specifications as well as the completion, ordeal and evaluation of the project. The analysis of requirements took into consideration the developments in the telecommunications and the modern requirements of the user and led to determination of specifications for the supported services. Also the operations of composer of circuit (FPGA System-on-Chip), the contacts and the scripts of control on the total system were determined. For the project completion all scripts of circuits control have been tested and the software of DSP and CPU has been completed and checked. Furthermore experiments and measurements for the control of records of system have been conducted. Also testings of system communications with additional products that circulate in the market as simple telephones, DSLAMs, servers, PCs have been accomplished.

In the frames of the project the networking of 100 Public Information Centers has been implemented. The Centers have been established all around the country to provide services of electronic information and entertainment to the citizens and specifically in those that live in removed and inaccessible regions. These centers are accommodated in the central library of each region and are interconnected via the Greek School Network. Also informative mobile centres have been established via the institution of Mobile Libraries. The total networking concerned 74 regularly centres and 26 mobile which with the finalisation of particular action, allocated:

• Structured wiring infrastructure for the implementation of their internal or wireless network

• Interconnection to the internet via the Greek School Network for the Stable Centres

• interconnection to the Greek School Network via G.P.R.S. and Internet over Satellite links for the Mobile Centers

Ethernet network that would support several airplane services for 800 passengers was also conducted. These services included Video-On-Demand, Live TV, Audio-On-Demand, phone communication, internal communication, web server, e-mail, e-commerce, flight information, games, interfaces with airplane avionics, etc. All the provided services were integrated in different levels (server, network, seat), in order to minimize the demands in weight, consumption and space.

NTS participated in the phases of network design, implementation, integration and evaluation and specifically in the network specifications, network servers and evaluation tools design, in the network integration and management (task leader), in the design and implementation of a network performance evaluation tool (Massive User Simulator about the HTTP traffic simulation of 800 passengers), in the phase of network assembly, in the integration demos and also in the evaluation experiments of the complete systems.

EQUAL is part of the European Union's strategy for more and better jobs and for ensuring that no-one is denied access to them. Funded by the European Social Fund, this initiative is testing since 2001 new ways of tackling discrimination and inequality experienced by those in work and those looking for a job.

Basic aim of the project is to overcome the prejudices, to create infrastructures and to promote practices that will allow as much as possible more equivalent confrontation of different national or racial origin workforce. The basic objectives that are sought are:

• To examine common opinion’s perceptions and attitudes towards foreigners and their role in the job market, as well as the factors concerning the above.

• To examine the real role of foreigners in the local job market and the possibilities of upgrading it according to international achieved models of labour incorporation.

• To imprint the professional profile of foreign workforce and to determine the actions that needs to be taken in order to improve its employment in the job market.

• The promotion of social incorporation for those that deal with racism through the development, enlargement and networking of structures of foreigners support, the establishment of multicultural character educational centers and parents support actions.

• The training and suitable exploitation of cultural mediators for the support of foreigners. The projection and aid of role and rights of foreigners in the job market.

• The sensitization of common opinion and the development of good practices in the local societies for the fighting of racism and the creation of multicultural societies.

• The multifaceted intervention in the formers of common opinion for the promotion of cross-cultural perceptions, attitudes and proceeding.
