Back in May, the Netherfield

Eco Action Team (NEAT) held their second annual Veg Out event, when hundreds of vegetable seedlings, 100 com-posters and many packets of seeds to plant at home were handed out to encourage peo-ple in Netherfield to grow their own food at home. The event was a huge success and those

who came along and picked up a

seedling (or three) may well be harvesting tomatoes, cour-gettes, lettuce or peppers by the time you're reading this. Generous folk donated over £400 on the day, which will be put towards NEAT's next ven-ture - WATER BUTTS. W a t e r b u t t s NEAT are busy sourcing con-tainers to store water in and

will announce more details in due course. If you would like to add your name to the list for a free water butt, please email netherfieldecoaction-t e a m @ l i v e . c o . u k

In Bloom

The Judges had a very hard time, in judging the competition this year, all the entries did a good job, as is the case every year, and the winners and those who came runner up, were all people who entered for the first time, which is very good in-deed. I go round with the judges every year, and usually manage to pick at least one of the winners, but I myself failed to pick even one winner, the en-tries where that good. But as usual the judges came up with the winners as follows;

Garden Competition

1st Jill Wood

Joint 2nd place

Helen Ashbride and Steve Goode.

Hanging Baskets

Walter Ursell. Garden and Hanging Basket

Competition

Joint 1st Mandy Todd and Britannia Court.

3rd Netherfield Scout Group

Update

So what have the Bea-vers, Cubs and Scouts been up to…..?

Camps, that’s What!

6 Scouts took part in the annual District Wa-ter Activities Camp at Trent Lock, Long Eaton in May. Activi-ties included Canoe-ing, Sailing and Raft Building. Although it didn’t rain the Scouts certainly got wet and-had a great time.

16 Cubs from the pack descended on our dis-trict campsite in June for a weekend camp of actvities like den build-ing, outdoor games, fire lighting, cooking and tunneling. It was some of the cubs first night staying in a tent, a landmark for a Scout.

This was followed the next weekend by 8 of the Scouts having a weekend camp at the district campsite where they did an 8 mile hike ( p a s t t w o g o l f courses!), cooking their dinner on the fire

and doing the ‘Canon Run’.

The two Scouts (they know who they are!) who represented the troop in the district archery competition in June did well. Al-though they didn’t win either the joint compe-tition or the individual competitions they cer-tainly had an enjoyable morning of archery with 8 ends under-taken of 6 arrows at two different distances.

We hope you saw the Beavers Cubs and Scouts who repre-sented the group at the Netherfield Parade to celebrate 125 years of the parish in July. Well done to them all. Thanks to the Scouts who read prayers at the service and helped to Marshall at the

Church. We also hope you came and visited our stall at the Nether-field Gala the day be-fore and enjoyed either a hamburger or a hot-dog.

Are you 6-14 years old and think you might be up to the challenge, while having lot’s of fun? Check the Loco centre activities times to find the section rele-vant to you and come along! (But be warned that the Cubs and Bea-vers have a waiting list!) Also if you are an adult and would like to help young people while having fun your-self come and see us, no experience neces-sary!

After a fantastic event in July with the 125th celebrations its time to look ahead at what's hap-pening both here and at the Loco Centre. We have some fantastic courses coming up in September. One of these, a Remi-niscing Course invites you to come and talk and chat about yesteryear—an op-portunity to meet new people too. We also have a new over 50’s IT class starting, showing you how to pay bills online, keep in touch with family and friends by email and much more. Food Hy-giene—a valuable qualifi-

cation for employment starts on the 20th Sep-tember. These courses

are free if on means tested benefits such as pension credits, housing , disability or incapacity benefits. If you would like to register your interest or want more info please pop into the centre. As always our courses are always advertised in the centre and NCN new pro-spectus’ are available at reception.

Also starting classes in September at the Loco and St Georges are Drama and Performing Arts groups, Raspberry Drama and Spotlight Theatre School for chil-dren and young people. For more information please contact the centre.

Its still only August but Halloween will soon be here and we are hopeful to host another fantastic Halloween party for the Children of Netherfield following last years bril-liant evening. If you would like to volunteer with the planning of this and any future events held by the Netherfield Forum please let us know.

As ever, Shunters Com-munity Cafe is open daily and open to ALL. If you’ve never been in please take the time to join us for a cuppa and a slice of

homemade cake and see what the centre has to offer.

After 2 years service, Ka-tie Ireland our receptionist has left for pastures new. We wish her all the best with everything she does in the future from all the staff and patrons of the centre. A big welcome goes to Aamna Mustafa who has recently joined us under the Future Jobs Fund scheme.

Finally we would like to wish Beattie, a regular in Shunters a speedy recov-ery and we look forward to seeing you back in the cafe soon.

Bin hazard in Our Streets

Bins and glass boxes left out on the streets and pave-ments are a hazardous problem for pedestrians. Gedling Borough Council is aware of a number of roads in Netherfield where people are not removing their bin off the street within 24 hours of it being emp-tied, which is causing some problems for pedestrians, particularly those with a visual impairment and people in a wheelchair or who have a pushchair. Bins left out also make a street look unsightly.

In September, the council will be visiting Dennis Street, Dunstan Street, Curzon Street, Forrester Street, Manvers Street, Arthur Street, Deabill Street, Cooper Street, Hodgkinson Street, Pearson Street and Godfrey Street to check that bins have been re-moved from pavements. If they find that bins have been left out, officers will talk to residents about the problem and encourage them to take their bins and glass boxes off the street. If you live on another street where there is a problem with bins being left out, please ring 0115 901 3621 to let the council know.

Following a spate of fire inci-dents across the county, the council would also recommend that you store your bins away from the house

Carlton & Netherfield Stations

Campaign for

More Trains The present train service is very limited espe-cially from Netherfield. There is a lot of support for a return to hourly services at both stations, so we can take advantage of reaching Radcliffe in 4 min-utes and Beeston in 15 for ex-ample.

A meeting was held at St. George’s Centre on 6th July, and over 40 people came along.

Notts County Council Public Projects Transport Officer and the Community Rail officer for the Skegness service have passed on our suggestions to East Midlands Trains.

On 15th July I met the commercial Manager of East Midland Trains and gave him a detailed account of the reason we believe a good local

train service would benefit the community and East Midlands Trains.

We hope to form a ‘Friends of Carlton & Netherfield Stations’ group to liase with East Midlands Trains. Latest information is available from St. George’s Centre, Victoria Road.

Vernon holds regular surgeries at the St Georges Centre, V i c t o r i a R o a d , Netherfield.

Under the constitutional rules of the Neighbourhood Watch Association, Mick Smith JP stood down as the chairman of the NHWA on 27th July. In his review before handing over the reins to new chair Carol Hellewell, he stated that Netherfield was a much Happier, Healthier and Safer than when the asso-ciation was formed in July 2007. In the lead up to the formation of the NHWA, Netherfield had gone through a particularly diffi-cult period, where many people had stated they were frightened to walk the streets, and it is reassuring to say that the because of the close work with the po-lice and neighbourhood

wardens this is no longer the case. This upturn in community feeling was clearly demonstrated at the recent 125th Anniversary of the Parish, which suc-ceeded in bringing all mem-bers of our close knit com-munity together. The period of the end of 2007 and be-ginning of 2008 was par-ticularly successful with a 33% reduction in crime and led to Mick receiving an award from the Police Au-thority. Netherfield’s NHWA has had many significant achievements over the last three years, including suc-cessfully petitioning for the erection of safety barriers at the bottom of Chandos Street. There has also been an agreement made

with Notts County Council for a speed reduction and crossing outside Chandos Street Primary School dur-ing this financial year. Other work has included the successful ‘Helping Hands Award’, which be-gan at Netherfield Primary School and is now a county wide project which this year involved over 2000 pupils from around the county. In ending his review Mick stated that he left a stable framework for getting all community issues resolved which make Netherfield a Healthier, Happier and Safer place for everyone. He finished by stating the work of the NHWA could not have been done without the continual help from

Lorna Mellors of Gedling Borough Council, Bob Vaughn-Newton crime re-duction manager, the Netherfield Forum, Inspec-tor Al Pearson and his predecessor Mark Towlson, Sgt Carol Adams de Bank and the PCSO’s, Vernon Coaker MP, former County C o u n c i l l o r J a m e s O’Riordan and current County Councillors John Clarke and Allen Clarke and finally Cllr Barbra Miller, In summing up Mick promised to continue his work as Vice Chairman of the NHWA and Head co-ordinator of Chandos Street and Kappler Close.

M e n ’ s H e a l t h Once again men’s Health was a priority for the GPs at Netherfield Medical Centre this summer. We took part in the “Be Well – Feel Well” campaign on 26th June when we ran our second successful Street Doctor event on Chandos Street. Our Patient Participation Group col-lared men who were out shopping and we offered them a Well Man Check. This included a blood pressure check, blood sugar check, urine checks and lots of advice about general health matters. We also provided advice related to smok-ing and alcohol. Many of the men who consulted were not regular attendees at their surgery and we identified several individuals who had previously undiagnosed medical condi-tions. This year we targeted younger men offering condom card registration, free condoms and free Chlamydia screening. Our two Street Doctor events have been such a success, we have decided to make Netherfield Street Doctor a regu-lar annual event.
