We had a very full on programme over the three days and it was good to see some centres making sure they people at all sessions. We hope that you found the majority of presentations informative and interesting - please make sure you complete the survey, as it is the only way we will know if we have achieved our goal of providing good value to you over the weekend. Thank you again to all the centres who attended and special thanks to those who travelled from far and wide and made a real weekend of it. I hope you also made the most of the chance to chat to other centres and share stories and swop great ideas! Congratulations to Netball Waitakere for the wonderful job they made hosting UNISS. It is a massive event and the volunteer hours that go in to making this successful are incredible - well done to you all. The event ran smoothly and was professional in all aspects, both on and off the court. I am sure you are looking forward to the Lion Foundation Championships at The Trusts Arena and then two weeks later The Trusts Arena are also hosts to the Silver Ferns vs Australian Diamonds Game, so it will be a busy few weeks for our events team supporting both major events. Community Netball

It’s been another busy month in Community with Centre field days, prize- giving’s, UNISS and our Zone

Centre Forum weekend. All our centres have now finished their winter seasons and our hard working

centre personnel are hopefully catching a bit of a breath on the weekend.

Our 2nd Centre Forum was well received by all that attended, and across the 3 days we had 97 attendees

with 15 out of 18 of our centres and satellite in attendance. Speaker presentations are being copied to

drop box and I will be sending the Key Personnel at each centre an invite to this drop box for the

dissemination of the information as it has proven a better system than trying to send some very large

files, I have also sent out evaluation forms so please return these to me by next week as we value your

feedback and are always looking to improve our service to you.

Thank you to everyone that attended and supported our Forum.

Netball Waitakere did a wonderful job of hosting UNISS 2014 and we would like to take this opportunity

to thank everyone that volunteered at this event. A record number of teams entered

Zone representatives, Trish Wilcox and Jan Skilton both had key roles at this event, convening selection

and umpire panels and supported the UNISS organising committee with organising and hosting this major

event.

Record number of teams entered; 114 teams.

1,400 Players, 125 umpires and 17 umpire

Coaching panel and 15 Tournament selectors and

A small army of volunteers from Netball Waitakere.

A special mention has to go to Lynette Brady , Netball North Harbour who again supported the UNISS

hosting Centre and took care of the draw remaining unflappable when faced with having to redo the

draw twice at the last minute .

The Zone conducted a review of the selection process and introduced a new selection process in line with

NNZ Emerging Talent Selection process. The number of tournament players identified was increased to

reflect the increase in participation and to bring in line with the rest of NZ.

In the process of conducting a review of this tournament, to date feedback has been very positive.

Congratulations to Netball Waitakere on a very successful tournament.

Please see the next page for tournament teams and UNISS players of the tournaments.

I will be working my way around the Zone in October and November to assist centres with reviewing and

evaluating this past season and to assist with planning for 2015. So look forward to catching up with many

of you then.

Don’t forget to come along to the Lion Foundation Champs at the Trust Stadium to support your local

Lion Foundation Team from the 29th September 2014 to 3rd October 2014. There looks to be some

tightly contested games and exciting matchups on the court.

Finally please let us know your AGM dates as we aim to be in attendance at as many as we can.

Junior Netball

Congratulations to all involved with the roll out of the new Netball NNZ Junior Netball programme this season.

At the Zone Centre Forum last weekend Laura Menzies NNZ Head of Community presented the following statistics to our netball community;

Netball New Zealand statistics Netball Northern Zone

statistics

It has been a busy productive year but so rewarding. Our centre junior coordinators who attended the Junior Development Session on the Sunday of the forum all shared that the first few weeks were a bit messy while all their community worked through the changes to game day, but once all were settled, the rest of the season went smoothly. The end of season rewards, seeing the enjoyment of the players and observing the development of their players’ basic skills being transferred into the less complex age appropriate modified games was so worth the effort. The other benefit to their netball community is the group of now confident and keen Star Helpers and Year 3 & 4 Coaches who have been nurtured into coaching through this new supportive programme. These wonderful people should now feel able and willing to continue with coaching and/or umpiring netball for years to come what a fantastic investment for the Centres.

Thank you for promoting the opportunity for parents to feedback directly to NNZ via the Survey Monkey Participation Satisfaction Survey. The result of 85% of respondents as being satisfied is a great result. We trust Centres and Junior Co-ordinators who have also been provided with another survey will take the time to feedback their experiences and suggestions.

Andy Rogers Director of Greater Auckland Coaching Unit presented a session at the Zone Forum “Coaches as People Makers”. His presentation was so in tune with some of the challenges our Centres have collectively faced this season when rolling out the new NNZ Junior Programme; the parents! The smiles on the children’s faces should say it all but some parents have difficulty with accepting the age appropriate modified games and leaving the

Page 6: Netball Northern Newsletter September 2014€¦ · Aorere Amber Chan Aorere Meleitia Leilua Western Heights Jodie Stevens St Dominics Luisa Pouanga St Marys Christy Alexander Aorere

competitive nature of our previous competitions behind for these extremely young players. Here are some of the key parts that Andy shared that might help those discussions with parents;

Also check out the “Changing the game in youth sports: John O’Sullivan” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXw0XGOVQvw#t=828

Looking towards to 2015 with NNZ; Most Centres will roll out the Year 3 & 4 programme for the first time and some of our Centres will offer to pilot the proposed options for the Year 5 & 6 modified game. It is so important that we use this opportunity to help shape and then roll out Phase 2 of the NNZ Junior Programme. Please promptly contact Trish Wilcox Community Netball Manager Netball Northern Zone to register your centre to be involved in a year 5 & 6 pilot.

Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands Netball finished their Season with some exciting FINALs. Congratulations to all the teams who played in BOI Competition this year; it was great to see the competitive element of the game and we are ALL excited in watching the progress of the new Courts. Moerewa Tigers and Hokianga United met in the finals of the Premier Grade. During the game it was a great show of netball skills, natural flare and exciting tussles on the court. Tigers not making any changes solidified their lead by halftime and holding on to it and taking the game by six goals. I have to mention the skills shown by Rowena Davis-Cooper and Chevaye Hobson both shooters played a very accurate and skilful game throughout the season and finishing on a high in the finals. Special mention also to Alisha Takimoana and Rowena Davis-Cooper who played in the Bay of Islands, Whangarei & Kerikeri Netball Centres and won all three of the Centres Premier Grades along with the Tigers ‘behind the scenes team of Sandi Bristow Manager/Camp mother, Trisha Davis Coach/Player, Roylene Enoka Senior player and main supporter, Pania Davis- Cooper Support coach 1, Yvonne Davies Support Coach 2 and Alb Baker as well as our tremendous Whanau Support without these people this team would not have been successful.

Congratulations to BOI College who made the finals of C Grade at UNISS this year losing by a very close margin to Albany – this was a fantastic achievement and the college will now compete in the B Grade in

2015. Well done to everyone who helped in their success campaign for 2014.

Whangarei Netball Centre

The Netball New Zealand Year 1-2 junior programme was a huge success for Whangarei Netball Centre with a total of 24 teams participating. Whangarei Netball Centre like many other centres ran a mini tournament to finish off the season for the players followed by a prize giving.

Rodney Netball Centre

Rodney Netball Centre held a very successful 50th jubilee weekend with past, present and of course our future players all attending. Highlights from the jubilee included the Jubilee Dinner where the history of the Rodney Netball Centre was shared with everyone who attended; the march past held Saturday Morning and the attendance of the oldest Rodney netball member and the Youngest. Sunday was the Oldfield Shield Challenge where representative teams from Hibiscus Coast Netball Centre, Kaipara Netball Centre, Northern Wairoa Netball Centre and Rodney Netball Centre competed against each other in the respective age groups. Well done to Rodney Netball Centre who took the Shield by 1 point over Northern Wairoa Netball centre. Congratulations to the Rodney Netball Centre and the Jubilee committee for an awesome jubilee weekend.

Northern Wairoa Netball Centre completed its last round of games August 16th. This year Northern

Wairoa Netball Centre has introduced an 8 team Premier Competition which proved quite successful for

the centre. Defending Champions the Northern Wairoa Bulls unable to retain their title losing to Pouto

Premiers. A great game of skill and flair was on display with both teams receiving massive support from

the crowd. Northern Wairoa is now looking at their summer leagues starting with a Vball Competition for

intermediate and senior players. Other great news from Northern Wairoa, was that Keely Paul who plays

for Dargaville High School Senior A and the Northern Wairoa Un17 Rep Team was named as Head Girl for

2015 for Dargaville High School. A great achievement, Keely has come through the ASBCT leadership

programme with Northern Wairoa Netball Centre and is a great ambassador for her centre and peers.

Well Done Keely!!

It has been a month full of excitement around UNISS and final Netball Tournaments taking place. I had the pleasure of attending the Otara Cluster Netball Tournament held at H.P.N.C. Wymondley Primary School Year 5-6 Boys won the Tournament playing in the finals against Mayfield. One of the Schools that made an impact was Yendarra School, their side-line support and striking uniforms not to mention the skilled players competing in the tournament showed a well organised netball community within their school, well-done.

Above: Yendarra showing their uniforms the boys Y5-6 team and their side-line support.

Page 10: Netball Northern Newsletter September 2014€¦ · Aorere Amber Chan Aorere Meleitia Leilua Western Heights Jodie Stevens St Dominics Luisa Pouanga St Marys Christy Alexander Aorere

The Tournament was run by Counties Manukau Sport-Lincoln Jefferson and Megan Grayson whom did a fantastic job of delivering a well-run Tournament. Elsie Tua from Papakura Netball Centre volunteered her expertise as an Umpire Consultant and her advice was gratefully received.

We have been engaged this term with Wymondley School in the Active in Schools Junior Netball programme with their Year 1-3 students; it has been great to see the progression of their skills develop throughout the five week period. The junior netball programme has been a huge success throughout the Counties area and we look forward to further engagements in Schools next term.

Above: Wymondley Boys who won the Tournament also pictured with the Wymondley girls team.

I was fortunate enough to be involved as a selector at UNISS held at Netball Waitakere of which Aorere College finished 1st place in B Grade and Alfriston College 2nd place this is a great achievement for Counties Manukau Schools. Aorere also had four players selected in the B Grade Tournament team. Other special mentions Gail Taumafai- Manurewa High School selected in C Grade Tournament Team and Strathallan placing 7th in D Grade for their first time entering in UNISS. For more results for the tournament team selections, please see the UNISS section above.

It has been great to be part of Otara, Manurewa and H.P.N.C Prizegivings over the past couple of weeks, and see all the successful winners enjoy there walk of fame. Trish and I will be making our way around the Counties Manukau Centres in October to assist centres with planning for 2015. Please contact me to book a day and time.

Well done to everyone for such a successful season and I am sure you will all enjoy this break and take the opportunity to recover from an arduous season.

Umpire Development

UNISS Tournament

The Upper North Island Secondary Schools tournament was once again held in the Northern Zone and this year was very ably hosted by Netball Waitakere.

With 116 teams participating this meant we had approximately 125 umpires officiating during the week. Many thanks to the Waitakere umpires who assisted us on Friday when many were injured.

This year we had 17 members on the coaching panel and they were split into 3 groups: NZ & NZ Theory, Zone & Zone Theory and Centre. They were then allocated umpires to coach for the week. This worked really well with all umpires being covered and receiving constant coaching over their 10 games. Many thanks to Reawyn Ronaldson, Debbie Shoebridge and Eleanor Kitching for leading these 3 groups. The umpires were very grateful for all the coaching they received.

Page 11: Netball Northern Newsletter September 2014€¦ · Aorere Amber Chan Aorere Meleitia Leilua Western Heights Jodie Stevens St Dominics Luisa Pouanga St Marys Christy Alexander Aorere

A special thanks to Elaine Curtis from NW who, along with myself, managed to allocate the umpires to the draw for 2 rounds each day. This was no mean feat as many retired injured as the week progressed and extras had to be sought.

Congratulations to the following umpires who were selected to do the various finals:

A Grade: Christina Matthews, Zak Middleton and Maru Delamere

B Grade: Turanita Tipene, Kendall Speck and Tiffany McGregor

C Grade: Hayley McDonald, Emma Mitchell and Avary Patutama

D Grade: Shontelle Hunter, Brianna Ellin and Johanna Kleven

The UNISS tournament saw many other notable achievements for umpires:

3 NZ awards – Turanita Tipene (HBC), Mako Wilson (Waitakere) & Kendall Speck (ANC)

7 Zone awards – Jodie Bennetto (Rodney), Jessica McKenzie (Nothern Wairoa) Amelia Chambers (Howick), Scott Bailey (Waitakere), Anna Goodman (Whangarei), Janelle Owen (Waitakere) and Jordyn Griffiths-Murdock (Waiuku)

3 sets of Mother and daughters umpiring – Cresswells (Whangarei), McKenzies (Northern Wairoa) & Hunters (Waitakere). Umpiring must definitely run in the blood!

The President of the Hibiscus Coast Netball Centre Tania Cargo, had every reason to celebrate also. Not only had the team that she coaches just won the D Grade, three umpires that she has also coached over the years at her Centre were appointed to finals. Turanita Tipene was appointed to the B Grade Final, Brianna Ellin to the D Grade final and Emma Mitchell who now umpires at NNH to the C grade final.

Zone Theory – Exam 2

Congratulations to the 37 Umpires who were successful in the recent Zone Theory exam. This was a great result for the Zone. Well done to all the wonderful tutors that we have in each Centre.

Special congratulations to Catherine Cato (Pukekohe) who gained the top mark of 49.5% and to Hayley Smith (Pukekohe) and Megan Topia (Northern Wairoa) who gained 49%.

Congratulations once again to all concerned.
