National Numeracy ChallengeThis is a major new drive to end the UK’s low levels of adult numeracy, which research suggests could be costing the economy £20 billion a year. The National Numeracy Challenge aims to show millions of people that they can do something to improve their everyday maths skills – and give them the help they need to get there.

The Challenge is supporting an expanding network of Unions, employers, training providers, education and community organisations to create the most ambitious ever drive to improve everyday maths skills and unionlearn are already signed up to support us!

Citizen Maths takes first steps - registration now openRegistration for the free open online maths course, Citizen Maths, is now open. Unionlearn is working in partnership with Citizen Maths to explore a different way of learning maths.

The course will be Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs A*-C). It is mainly aimed for:

self-motivated individuals whose level of mathematical capability is at or above Level 1, but is not yet at Level 3, and who want to improve it;

trade unions their members (or employers who want to provide staff) with a practical and flexible learning and development opportunity in maths.

Learners will need to have use of (and know how to use) a desktop or laptop computer with a broadband internet connection.

Citizen Maths will involve interaction with a range of meaningful problems. These include: mixing recipes, creating pie charts, looking for best buys, figuring out how the pinch gesture works in an iPhone, and deciding how many workers to deploy at the supermarket checkouts.

The course includes a series of short instructional videos by two very experienced maths teachers, to give learners the feeling that they are in a one-to-one tutorial with a skilled teacher.

The learners are invited to take a quick pre-course self assessment to help them decide if Citizen Maths is right for them. The creators of the course are also keen to hear feedback from learners and others interested in workbased learning so that they can further develop the course experience. There will be also an opportunity to fill in an evaluation questionnaire in the end of the course.

Citizen Maths is an Open Online Course and it is available over the Internet without charge. It has been developed in collaboration between Calderdale College, CogBooks, the Institute of Education, and OCR, with funding from the Ufi Charitable Trust.

Register now for Citizen Maths course from the "Ready to Register?" page on the Citizen Maths website; the course starts and is due to go live on or around 12 September 2014.

More information about course is available on the Citizen Maths website; You can also follow Citizen Maths on Twitter – @citizenmaths.For more information on working with Citizen Maths, contact unionlearn e: [email protected] more at: http://www.unionlearn.org.uk/news/2014/08/20/citizen-maths-takes-first-steps-registration-now-open#sthash.Pir3bd7P.dpuf

Join the National Conversation on 'The Wales We Want'Be part of the biggest conversation taking place in Wales. This is your opportunity to share your views on the Wales you want for our future generations. You can join the conversation as an individual, group, community or network. To find out more, read our About section.

Take our quick survey

Considering what Wales could look like in 2050 raises a number of important questions. Are we happy with how things will be? Which elements would we like to change and which would we like to maintain? What can we do now to ensure that our vision is achieved? Some countries have already undertaken work to explore their vision for the future, and several issues consistently emerge.

Whether you're passionate about culture, education, the economy, the environment, healthcare or about other issues that affect your local community, we want to hear from you. Tell us about the Wales you want to leave for future generations – your children, grandchildren, your community.

So to start our National Conversation we've created a quick survey to explore some of these topics. The survey should only take a few minutes, and there's space at the end for you to add your own comments. Take our quick survey

Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your views.__________________________________________________________________

Start Up Loans Help Create Nearly 300 New Businesses Start Up Loans – which provide low interest finance for entrepreneurs – have helped nearly 300 business start ups since they were launched in Wales just ten months ago.

To date £2.2m has been drawn down by 291 new businesses across Wales - helping to create brand new businesses and supporting recently created enterprises. The loans, which were launched in Wales in October 2013, are available as part of the Welsh Labour Government’s Business Wales Start up Service. The availability of low interest rate loans for starts ups was one of the recommendations of the Welsh Government’s Access to Finance Review led by Professor Dylan Jones- Evans.

The loans are to be paid back within five years at a fixed rate of interest currently set at 6%. The maximum loan amount is £25,000, with the average in Wales standing at £7,658. Applications must be supported by robust business cases and further information and support can be obtained from Business Wales on 03000 6 03000.

New public ownership calls as rail fares set to rise 25 per cent since 2010The TUC believes that passengers are being short-changed by wage-busting rail fare rises. Passenger Focus surveys show that only 45 per cent of rail passengers believe that the services they use provides value for money.

In 2012/13 train operating companies collectively received £1.3bn in direct subsidies through franchise receipts and a further £3.9bn in indirect subsidy through investment in Network Rail services. In return, train operating companies paid back just £1.2bn in franchise payments to the government, but they took £172m in profits and paid out £204m in dividends to shareholders.

By contrast, the East Coast Main Line has shown the benefits of a publicly-owned railway by returning over £1bn to the taxpayer in the last five years – all of which will be re-invested in the service, instead of going into the pockets of company shareholders. If all the train operators were publicly owned, more money could be retained for higher investment in safety and better trains, as well as lower ticket prices. But despite the evidence, the government is pressing ahead with re-privatising the East Coast Main Line, even though two private companies previously failed to deliver.

Public ownership of our railways has widespread public support. A YouGov Poll in November 2013 found that 66 per cent of those surveyed were in favour of returning the railways to public ownership.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said: “It’s grim news for commuters that they face yet another year of fare hikes above inflation, while their wages keep dragging behind inflation. The cost to passengers of the failed privatisation of our railways keeps growing year on year. We’ve ended up with slower trains and higher fares than countries who have kept their trains in public hands. It’s time to stop private companies profiteering from our railways and to make sure that passengers and taxpayers’ money is reinvested to improve our services. The only way to do this is to bring our railways back under public ownership.”

So, we only charge interest on the reducing balance of loans (not the whole initial amount), have no hidden costs like set-up fees, administrative charges or early repayment charges, and many of us offer free insurance on savings and loans up to £5,000.

Your money stays local, benefiting the wider community.

Our financial products, loan interest rates and dividends on savings can be very competitive and vary from credit union to credit union. It’s best to take a look at your local credit union – or fill in our Contact Us form and they'll get in touch.

Don’t forget to check to see if your own union has a credit union
