  • THANK YOUFiscal year 2014 (July 1, 2013 June 30, 2014) saw great milestones for New England Public Radio as we progressed toward moving into our new headquarters in Springfield which happened at the end of October. While many of our off-air activities centered on making that happen, New England Public Radio continued to provide our unique blend of music and news to western New England as weve done for over 50 years.

Read on and learn about yet another great year for NEPR. On behalf of the NEPR Foundation Board, and our staff, thank you for your generous and continued support. This document is a testament to you.

  • HIGHLIGHTS The news department reorganized in 2014, putting more focus on long-form feature reporting and in-depth conversations that offer the context NEPR listeners expect. Newscasts remain vibrant with faster headlines and more audio from the newsmakers and residents of the region.

NEPR brought listeners the important and compelling stories reported across the region through expanded partnerships with other public radio stations in New England including New Hampshire Public Radio, Vermont Public Radio, Rhode Island Public Radio, WBUR Boston, and WSHU and WNPR in Connecticut.

We commissioned a series of stories from reporter Nancy Cohen on the salesmanship of local agriculture, goods and services called A New Kind of Local.

Social media: The newsroom is more actively engaged on the stations Twitter accounts: @NEPRNews and @wfcr885.

Unmatched local election coverage: We hosted supporters and opponents of all four statewide ballot questions in Massachusetts for a series of short debates, published a voters guides and provided extended newscasts throughout the night of Massachusetts primary election.

AWARDS Reporter and host Susan Kaplan was recognized with a first place

award for feature reporting from the Massachusetts/Rhode Island Associated Press. A Moment with World War II POWs is the story of three New England veterans and former prisoners of war that gather every Veterans Day.

  • VALLEY GIVES DAY 2013On December 12, 2013, 631 contributors pledged nearly $61,000 to NEPR on Valley Gives Day. As a result, NEPR qualified for third place

Valley-wide for both number of donors and dollars raised in the large non-profit category. The third place finish qualified the station for an additional $11,200 in grants from the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts for a grand total of just over $73,000.

FEED YOUR RADIOFEED A FAMILYIn March 2014, NEPR partnered with the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts and the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts for Feed Your Radio, Feed a Family, one of our most popular fund drives. Once again, our listeners responded to the message of helping your community

while supporting NEPR! The campaign raised over $225,000 in support of programming on NEPR and supported 52,500 meals the Food Bank provided to area food pantries and shelters. This year, as a special challenge, when 2,200 individual contributions were made, Deans Beans Organic Coffee and OConnells Convenience Plus each donated 1,000 gallons of gas to fuel the Food Banks delivery trucks and mobile food pantry.

    CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

During FY14, an incredible amount of demolition turned what was once five distinct businesses a clothing store, a nail salon, a lawyers office, a jewelry store and a vacant former bar into one 15,000 square foot space for New England Public Radio. Drywall went up, carpet was put down, brand new audio equipment was installed in every studio and furniture began to populate the offices. By the end of June, over $6 million was raised toward the $7 million community goal, with an additional $1,767,850 in New Market Tax Credits to help fund our new headquarters. This represents incredible progress in just over three years and leaves $1 million to go to meet the overall goal for the comprehensive Campaign. Gifts have come in with roughly $2 million from businesses, foundations, institutions and events and over $4 million in gifts from nearly 400 NEPR listeners.
