WELCOME TO NENAGH ARTS CENTREWelcome to Nenagh Arts Centre’s April-June 2014 brochure. Easter is just around the corner, so be sure to check out the line-up for MARSHMALLOW EASTER CAMP, which promises to prevent boredom and chocolate overdoses over the holidays!

Continuing on from the success of our classic film season we are screening a special selection of Oscar 2014 - nominated films including THE GREAT BEAUTY which won the Foreign Language category, GRAVITY which took home seven Academy Awards and Blue JASMINE which saw Cate Blanchett take the Best Actress title.

PHILOMENA screens at the Arts Centre this season, having brought the plight of adopted Irish children and their parents to international attention last year. This topical issue is further explored in our Theatre programme with play POSTSCRIPT.

Our Music programme continues with concerts from inspirational country singer JAMES KILBANE and the much loved BRENDAN SHINE in addition to some excellent tributes to the music of THE DRIFTERS and JOHNNY CASH.

We look forward to seeing you at the Arts Centre!

THE LIVES OF OTHERSDir: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck Germany | 2006 | 137 min | 15A

Set in East Germany during the last gasps of the soviet era, THE LIVES OF OTHERS tells the story of intelligence officer Gerd Wiesler, who is commissioned to spy on a writer and his actress partner by a corrupt government official. While working on the case, Wiesler is immersed in the couple’s lives, spying and listening to bugged recordings. As Wiesler becomes bound up in the couple’s story, his politics begin to change, leading him to take some heroic risks in their defence.

“A tightly wound and quietly powerful film, it chillingly captures the atmosphere of fear, suspicion and intimidation in the years before the Berlin Wall came down.”Michael Dwyer, The Irish Times.

POSTSCRIPTPOSTSCRIPT is a poignant and humorous account of a woman turned detective - on a mission to reveal the truth.‘From a very early age I was told I was adopted. In fairness I think my parents had no choice but to tell me, what with me being redheaded with pale skin in a family with dark skin and dark hair - this made it pretty obvious that something wasn’t right. While I loved being able to say I was adopted when I was a child (because it made me feel exotic), I also learned that it was a word that was used by adults with a dropped voice. ‘Bad blood will out’ was a phrase that was often thrown around in conversation in relation to adopted children in 70’s and 80’s Ireland.’

“A haunting retrospective that makes you question the family history written on your face and buried in your genes”Irish Theatre Magazine

STRICTLY CASH: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF JOHNNY CASHSTRICTLY CASH’s sound is as authentic as you’ll get, created by the boom-chicka-boom of the big upright bass, the steady clickety-clack of the drums, stunning lead guitar mixed with acoustic guitar and vocals. PHILOMENADir: Stephen Frears | UK, USA, France | 98min | 12A

The story of Philomena Lee’s search for her son following her incarceration at a Magdelene laundry in Roscrea has now attained legendary status in Ireland and abroad. Speaking for the thousands of parents and children who suffered at the hands of a cruel clerical system PHILOMENA is the poignant story of a woman’s search for her lost child. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world, Philomena’s Irish mannerisms are offset against her cynical travelling companion, BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith.

BLUE JASMINEDir: Woody Allen | USA | 98 min | 15A

After Vicky Christina Barcelona, Midnight in Paris, and To Rome with Love, Woody Allen returns to American soil with BLUE JASMINE – a return that brings with it some of the sharp-edged wit that was perhaps absent from his overseas triptych. Cate Blanchett is outstanding as Jasmine, a down-and- out New York socialite who, left destitute by her cheating husband’s financial misdemeanours, moves in with her adopted sister and her blue-collar boyfriend in San Francisco. Oscillating between cool haughtiness, and pill-popping anxiety, Blanchett is a neurotic Allen heroine par excellence. Polished dialogue and serrating humour ensure this will go down as a favourite in the Allen canon.
