Hall Warden’s Report The 2017 Nelson Mandela year started off with our Hall Committee Leadership camp. As always, it was enjoyed by all. The leadership camp weekend contributes greatly to the successful working relationship in our Hall. The first year students settled in well and enjoyed the various O-week activities.

At the end of the first semester, Douglas Eastment stepped down as Warden of Stanley Kidd House, and Jonathan Hellemann took over from him.

As usual, we had a busy year with the various social, academic, cultural and community engagement activities planned. More details are in the reports from the various students.

Lastly I would like to thank all for their contribution to another successful year at Nelson Mandela Hall.

ACADEMIC EXCLELENCEAcademically, Adelaide Tambo as a residence improved as the 2nd years finished 1st in Nelson

Mandela hall. Mr. Andrew Cowper had the highest average for a 3 rd year and another vital

person who was integral in the running of the residence is Samkelo Mngadi whose experience

as a sub warden, senior student and the current Hall senior student enabled him to help both

the Warden and house committee to run smoothly.

Book sale and Academic talk

As a Hall, we needed to tackle the academic year ahead as we most definitely could not do so without sorting the problem of some students not having their prescribed textbooks. This led to us having a book sale where some returning students offered their old textbooks to housemates who had no means of acquiring a textbook, while other returning students sold their old textbooks at a reasonable and reachable price the girls in the house can afford. This event was also a fundraising event for the house as the house made R10 out of every textbook sold. We also held academic talks which covered topics such as study techniques, habits to form and habits to avoid. This talk was to assist each other with the main purpose and reason for us being at Rhodes University.

WELLNESS APPROACH TO LIFE

Adelaide Tambo thrived in sports this year coming first in the Nelson Mandela dining hall and 2nd overall in the University. The first years participated in a run around the block. It was the first sporting event of the year, we came in first place, and our winning streak continued from there.

INTER-RES SPORTS – Joseph Gasura headed up the portfolio of Sports Rep for the year and without fault, motivated the House to participate all through the year. As a result, Guy Butler House participated in all events, with worthy mentions in events such as Inter Res Archery where Guy Butler collected 106

points out of a possible 120; the Highest score of the day. This resulted in Guy Butler coming 1st amongst all the reses. We held the 2nd Position in the University Inter-Res Log by the end of first Semester as well as the end of the second Semester. We also ended off the year with a friendly match against SKIDD House where Guy Butler won by a 2-0 victory. We participated in the netball team for our inter-hall event against Jan Smuts Hall and had our own fully functional team for inter- house sports events. We further participated in the Rhodes University running club.

One of the best event we held this year was the farewell hike for Doug were the house hiked up

to the top scope and had a residence braai by Grey dam.

CELEBRATING AND EMBRACING OUR DIVERSITY

TRANSFORMATION TALKS – Guy Butler Transformation and Wellness Rep, Mfundo Somandi displayed a matureness and insight into the selection and organisation of Transformation Talks as well as facilitation of discussions throughout the year. Our main talks were:

On the 28th of March - Topic: Feminism and the Investigation of African Feminism (included were discussions on rape and rape culture), with Guest Speakers as Lulu & Corinne. Followed by an internal talk on the 14th of August on the Role of a White man/person in society (issues on race relations, racism and other forms of discrimination formed part of the discussions). Furthermore, Guy Butler has garnered a reputation for its informal gatherings and discussions on many such topics, in which we engage as Res members; sharing information through talks during study breaks, free time at Res etc.

Adelaide Tambo participated in the cultural parade hosted by the University. The country we supported was Scotland. The ladies marched around Grahamstown and ended the walk with a photograph of the African country outline.

It is part

of Helen Joseph House’s tradition to celebrate Woman’s day as it is a time not only to celebrate phenomenal women who have gone before us, but it is also time to for us as housemates and sisters to celebrate and edify each other.

The girls shared skills with the rest of the house leading a choreography session that turned to a mob dance where everyone had fun. Lastly in this event, we teamed up into our different corridors and we had a lip sync battle that we all enjoyed.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community engagement was a highlight this year which kept us busy in every single term of the academic year. Term 1 comprised of the Adelaidies organising a Joza Youth hub clean up and having an open day with our partner, CM Vellem. Term 2 rolled up and we initiated the first computer literacy programme that our residence has ever done. This programme helped us engage with the students of CM Vellem and use our skills to teach them how to use their tablets and computers they had received as a gift from MTN.

This year, community engagement, headed up by Zuko Ntlakaza, consisted off res members engaging in

weekly volunteering programs. On the 25th of March we had a clean-up at the Joza Youth Hub with our

hall community partner CM Vellam. On the 1st of April, we went in support to an open day at the Joza

Youth Hub with young kids of CM Vellem. The 20th of May was, community engagement with CM Vellam

Primary School for a Computer & Tablet Induction. Also, the 26 th of May Guy Butler helped out with a

soup kitchen session along with the boys at FC Sophia Young Stars. GB was also part of Trading lives with

FC Sophia Youngsters and Pick n pay on the 28th of July. Guy Butler has been consistent in all efforts

towards community engagement under a determined and hardworking leader, who was at all times

directly involved and continually motivating fellow Res members likewise.

This year we had a clean-up at the Joza Youth Hub where we spent a day partnering with the students at the Joza Youth Hub to help make a cleaner and healthier environment. Relationships were made, dreams were shared, and motivation was imparted.

We then had Trading Live with CM Vellum where the student had an opportunity to come to Rhodes University at Nelson Mandela Hall where we played indigenous games with the students. We later moved to Helen Joseph Lawns where we had a dance off and later had lunch. It is amazing how indigenous games can help improve math, literacy and communication skills hence we were pleased to exchange indigenous knowledge with such amazing kids from CM Vellum. Lastly, we had a tablet and computer tutorial Saturday, where students from Helen Joseph House taught the CM Vellum learners basic computer skills.

Term 3 involved the ladies of the residence participating in Mandela Trading Live with the same children we assisted in term 2 for computer literacy. We sang and danced with the children of CM Vellem. We thought we were going to teach the children a few educational games but they ended up teaching us so much more. The Nelson Mandela dining hall was filled with laughter for the entirety of the time the pupils were present.

In term 4 we continued assisting the school with the computer literacy programme and built a very strong relationship with them.

For the entire year we collected items including teddy bears, tooth paste, soaps, face cloths etc. to contribute to our collection of comfort kits. These kits are donated to Settler’s Hospital and given to rape victims after an attack when leaving the hospital. This was started last year as an initiative from our residence and we were fortunately able to carry on this year.

Give 5 is a fundraising campaign run by students for students. The money raised in the campaign is raised under the umbrella of the Rhodes Annual Fund and it helps students that are struggling financially.

In order to play our part to raise funds, Adelaide Tambo sold raffle tickets to give individuals a chance to win a raffle worth more than R450. We also sold Apple munch® and Refresh® cold drinks at the Day Kaif in order to raise more funds. We were able to raise the most funds in our dining hall whilst being able to help our fellow students.

Entertainment events revolved around including members of the house and pairing with other residences for events. We cooked marshmallows, had braais, had games evening, and many other activities to keeps us entertained and busy for the year. As they say, “a photo is worth a thousand words”.
