Please only leave smaller windows open to make it less easy for someone to gain access to your home. I appreciate that we all now live in a high tech age with all sorts of mobile data devices, lap tops and computers, which bring with them their own security headaches including various forms of cyber crime. Many of us still have some concerns regarding the placing of our whole life online, especially personal and financial data. LOCAL BREAK-IN REPORTEDWe have had reports of a young man knocking on a resident’s door after 10pm on Thursday 14th May, who said he had run out of petrol. There were a couple of others outside and when they had gone the residents discovered their van, in Church Lane, West Parley had been broken into. The neighbouring property also had some men wandering around his garden who told him his roof needed repairs and gave him an extortionate quote for the work. Please remain vigilant on behalf of yourselves and any vulnerable neighbours.

Annual Parish MeetingOver 60 residents attended the recent Annual Parish Meeting held at the Memorial Hall. After an update on a wide range of local issues and future plans, residents asked questions on important local issues such as the plans for large scale housing developments in the village, the increasingly busy local roads and a complaint that one of the oldest trees in the village next to a new housing estate had been cut down despite a preservation order being on it.

Road markingsDorset County Council have agreed to put double ‘Slow’ signs on the approaches to the bend in New Road by the Porsche garage and ‘Keep Clear’ signs by the road junctions close to Parley Cross so that local residents should find it easier to come out of the side roads at busy times.John Cullen

Police Report

It was interesting to note that during the pre-election campaigning there was virtually no mention of crime and disorder; it just wasn’t seen as an issue by the political parties. The Police Service is not political and I am not going to talk about politics! But it did provoke some thought on this subject. There is a perception that the Police are primarily an emergency service. Indeed we are, but actually the 999 response is only a small part of the overall workload. There is a wide spectrum of varied and complex incidents that officers working in your area regularly deal with, that for valid reasons goes unreported. I think it’s fair to say that the modern Police Officer has to possess many different skill sets and be all things to all people! Please do be assured though that we are still very much focussed on fighting crime and identifying and tackling emerging problems. The officers from your local Safer Neighbourhood Team all work closely with a number of key partners and one recent example of collaborative working involved an individual who was causing all sorts of problems to nearby residents and negatively affecting people’s right to a peaceful life. By working with the Housing Association, not only were the criminal offences committed dealt with in court, but an injunction was able to stop that person causing any more problems to other residents. At the same time measures were put in place to provide help for the perpetrator. We have recently taken delivery of an off-road all-terrain vehicle which has enabled greater patrolling and visibility in the heathland and forest areas. This is a really effective way of preventing arson, tackling ASB and assisting other emergency services in reaching hard-to-access locations. Your local PCSOs will be out in the vehicle pictured here so keep an eye out for them.Rural crime remains one of our priorities and if you see any suspicious vehicles or activity please either call 101 to report or 999 if a crime is being committed. Additionally if you are concerned about giving your details you can remain anonymous and use Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.East Dorset remains a very safe place to live and work, and still holds its 4th place position as one of the most peaceful places in the UK peace index. Your Neighbourhood Watch hugely contributes to achieving this and they need more volunteers and members to join. Could you contribute even a little bit of time in supporting your community? And finally……PC 1496 Julian Humphries, West Moors and Heatherlands Community Police Officer followed up his Dorset Police Beat Officer of the Year Award by winning the inaugural Rotary Club Community Engagement Award - see below. Well done to Julian and his team. So despite the uncertainty around financial cuts and political changes, your local policing teams and patrol officers continue to deliver a quality service to their local communities. This is in no small part down to the fantastic support and help we get from you, the public and residents of East Dorset and I remain very grateful for that.

Inspector Wayne Nock

Dorset Police Officer of the Year AnnouncedThe county’s ‘Officer of the Year’ was announced on 25 April 2015 at The Dorset Rotary Police Community Awards 2015 in Bournemouth. Police Constable Julian Humphries, of East Dorset’s Safer Neighbourhood Team, was awarded first place.Police Sergeant Dave Kewley, of Bournemouth’s SNT, and Police Constable Scott McGregor, of Bridport’s SNT, were awarded second and third places respectively. The event, hosted by Ferndown Rotary Club, saw the three Dorset Police employees awarded for their outstanding work within the community.Dorset’s Chief Constable, Debbie Simpson, and Police and Crime Commissioner, Martyn Underhill, presented the three awards in front of the guests, including the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset, the Mayors of Bournemouth and Ferndown, and Dorset Rotary District Governors, Mike Jackson and Judy Barnard-Jones.22 of Dorset’s 31 Rotary clubs nominated one serving Police Officer, Police Community Support Officer or Special Constable from across the Force. The nominees were then judged by an independent panel against the following five criteria:

• Displays very high standards of professionalism.• Performs significant acts of courtesy, kindness and understanding.• Handles complex and difficult situations with humanity.• Excellence in a particular policing discipline, role or task.• Demonstrates a significant act of bravery/courage.

Police Constable Julian Humphries joined Dorset Police following a career in the armed forces. He is held in high regard by members of the public who live in the Heatherlands area. He is known for his involvement in local charities, in particular the ‘Bus Stop Club’, a small local charity based in the estate in Ferndown.PC Humphries started work in the area about ten years ago, when crime and anti-social behaviour was a problem in the area, and spearheaded the improvements seen there today. Crime has dropped to an all-time low and there is an active youth shelter and BMX track, and people feel able to talk about issues to the Police. He continues to support local clubs and the Neighbourhood Watch, regularly knocking on residents’ doors for a chat. He was recently called ‘The most helpful Police Officer I have ever encountered’ by a resident. On winning his award, PC Humphries said: “It is a great honour to be recognised, not only by the Force, but by an external organisation too. It’s a privilege to work within the communities that I do and I’m proud to have played a part, alongside local agencies, in making these improvements.”Dorset Police Chief Constable, Debbie Simpson, said: “I’m immensely proud of all our officers in Dorset and it’s events like this that allow us to take the time to recognise those who really give something back to the community. It can be easy for these outstanding acts to go unnoticed and I am truly grateful to the Rotary Club for recognising the work of our Police Officers, staff and volunteers. The awards presented this evening represent the work done across Dorset every day to make it such a safe place.”Martyn Underhill, Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “It is vital we recognise officers and staff who go above and beyond in ensuring our communities are safe and these awards celebrate that. Dorset is one of the safest places to live in the UK and this wouldn’t be the case without the dedication, commitment and hard work officers display every day across our county. I would like to commend the three officers who received awards and congratulate the other 19 officers who were nominated.”The Ferndown Rotary Club and Mr Underhill decided to run this programme to bring awareness to some of the more extraordinary work carried out by officers and staff in the county. Dorset is the first county to trial this programme. Derrick Powell, President of Ferndown Rotary club, said: “We thought it was high time that there was an event which recognised not only the good work done by the Police Force in Dorset but also the excellence of the people in the Force.”

Heatherlands and Ferndown Links ReportI am very glad to report that no one in the Ferndown South or West Parley patch has been the victim of a dwelling burglary in the past 3 months. This is excellent news and evidence that the measures householders take to protect their and their neighbours’ properties have been effective. Sheds and garages predictably have fared less well. Normally they are easier targets being less well secured or even on occasion left unlocked. Two reported thefts of this nature and one attempt were reported between the two patches. Thieves were successful in stealing a bicycle and garden tools but were defeated by a stout lock at the third. Vehicle crime forms the next major category. Four unattended cars were attacked - two for property that was left on display within them and the other two for vehicle parts such as interior trim and exhausts. Theft of pedal cycles was confined to the West Parley area where three were taken from gardens or left unattended for short periods. Victims of violence were almost all within a domestic environment and there were no random attacks by strangers on local residents. Domestic abuse remains a Force priority and we continue to support a growing network of agencies engaged with the victims who inevitably and very sadly include children. You may have heard about or even received fraudulent telephone calls from people purporting to be your bank, intent on accessing your money either by persuading you to give over your PIN or to make bank transfers. Having explained that someone is trying to access your account, the fraudsters will attempt to arrange for a courier to call at your house to collect your bank cards. This will always be fraudulent. No genuine bank or Police Officer will ever ask you to disclose your PIN or request details over the telephone. If you receive such a call HANG UP, wait for at least 5 minutes and then ring 1471 and record the details of the caller. Then call the Police on 101. Fraudsters are doing this because it has been a successful tactic in the past - several million pounds have been handed over to them across the country this year alone. Finally there have been a few changes of personnel at Ferndown. PCSO Steve Winning has moved to the Force Control Room and PCSO Chantelle Gosney is now in training to be a full-time Police Officer. Your Beat Officer will temporarily be PC Mike Burt and we are anticipating the arrival of two new PCSO’s to bring the Ferndown Central team up to full strength.

Regards, PC 1496 Julian Humphries

DORSET POLICE LAUNCH JUNIOR PCSO SCHEME IN WEST HOWE

On 28th April 2015 Dorset Police commenced their seven week Junior PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) Scheme in West Howe with students from Heathlands Primary School and Elm Academy. This beneficial project has been developed to support children aged eight to ten years old. It aims to increase the confidence and self-esteem of the children, while promoting positive Police engagement in order to encourage the children to feel confident to approach their local policing teams with community information and concerns, or for help and support.Split into seven modules, the initiative takes place every Tuesday after school from 3.30pm - 5pm. The scheme provides 20 young people with the opportunity to learn about the emergency services and how to act in an emergency. As Junior PCSOs the children will develop their team working skills as well as their personal responsibility by exploring

ways to become more active members of their community.PCSO Andy Downs, from Bournemouth North SNT is one of the officers leading the project. He comments on the scheme: “We are delighted to be implementing the Junior PCSO scheme into the West Howe area. It provides local children with the opportunity to gain an insight into the emergency services, their local environment and history of the area.By the end of the project we intend for all of the young people to have refreshed self-esteem and an understanding of what they can achieve as a productive part of a team.As well as developing a positive view of emergency services, we also aim for each child to have an enhanced appreciation of the important part they play as good citizens who take care of where they live.”Modules will include visits to Police custody, the local fire station and a trip to Edward May Court, a local sheltered housing retirement residence, where the children will be able to interact with the residents and learn how life was and is like for them in the area. The children will also be visited by a member of the Police dog section, a paramedic and a member of the Urban Heath Partnership who will discuss the environment and why the heath is so important, considering how fires can have a devastating effect on wildlife. The scheme concludes with an awards ceremony which presents completion certificates to each Junior PCSO to recognise their hard work and provides an opportunity for the parents to see what their children have learned. A special trophy will be awarded to the Junior PCSO who has shown the most improvement, team working skills and good citizenship throughout the project.

from scams including internet crime.Topics include protecting your computer and wi-fi network, spotting phishing emails and websites where scammers try to obtain your personal and financial card details, and top tips to protect your identity and cash from online scammers. The website also has a fun scam spotting quiz to help you become more confident in spotting this type of fraud. Why not take a look now?Scams do come in many different shapes and sizes though and we wanted to take this opportunity to remind you about Dorset Police’s campaign to ‘Hang up on Fraudsters’ because telephone fraudsters are targeting Dorset residents. The fraudsters pretend they are from the Police, a bank, retailer or fraud department. They tell their victim that their account has been compromised and to dial 999 or their bank to confirm the call is genuine. BUT the fraudster keeps the phone line open so when the victim redials they are still talking to a fraudster who tricks them into handing over their bank details, Personal Identification Number (PIN) or cash for safe keeping.• NEVER give out your PIN or bank details to ANYONE

who calls you, no matter who they claim to be, or where they claim to be from.

• Never send cash in a taxi or via courier.• Never send bank cards anywhere - always keep them with

you. • The Police and your bank will NEVER ask you for your

personal bank information over the phone. If you receive a call from someone who wants your bank details: • Hang up.• Wait for at least five minutes.• Dial 1471 and write down the telephone number.• Call the Police immediately on 101.

DOG FOULINGProsecutions and the law

Members are reporting that dog owners are allowing their dogs to foul public areas on Parley Sports Field, Parley Woods and the heath. One member reported collecting 19 black plastic bags of dog faeces left on the main pathway leading from Lone Pine Drive entrance to the heath. Why do people do that when there are Red Bins provided for the purpose ?Dog fouling is unpleasant and can be a health hazard. Report an incident of dog fouling to your local council or on-line: www.dorsetforyou.com/dog-foulingA dog warden may then contact you and/or visit the area to assess how severe the problem is and take the appropriate action to deal with it.Owners can be prosecuted if they persistently allow their dog to foul in parks, on footpaths or any other public area, with fines up to £1000.The West Parley Resident volunteer group have put several years of work into making the sports area and Parley Wood places for all residents to enjoy.
