D arling may be famous as the theatrical home of performer Pieter Dirk-Uys, but the
wineries in and around this small town are quietly building a reputation for turning out both full-bodied reds and superb Sauvignon Blanc.
Turning off the R27 coastal road, Groote Post Vineyards should be your first stop. Since 1999, when the first vintage was bottled, the Pentz family have slowly shifted from dairy farming to winemaking and conservation. Lukas Wentzel has run the cellar since 2000, and has pushed quality forward in leaps and bounds. The Sauvignon Blanc is among the best in the region, while the Riesling, Chardonnay and Shiraz are all excellent. They also picked up the Best Merlot Trophy at the 2016 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. The entire range can be sampled in the laid-back tasting room, or book a table at the charming Hilda’s Kitchen restaurant in the manor house.
Meandering north towards Darling takes you past vineyards, pastures and wheat fields, as well as the entrance to Duckitt Nurseries. One of the largest Cymbidium orchid growers in the southern hemisphere, their open house days (first Saturday of the month, 9am to 12pm) allow visitors a wander through the expansive flower-growing tunnels, and to snap up cut-price orchids.
Looking for a wine-loving day out without the crowds? Point your nose north to the vineyards of Darling

Then, head down the R315 to the door of Darling Cellars. This co-operative cellar turns out a dizzying array of wines, many of them at extremely pocket-friendly prices. Look out, though, for their Limited Release red and white blends, which are well worth the extra spend.
Alongside the railway track a bumpy gravel road leads down towards Cloof Wine Estate, famous in recent years as home to Rocking the Daisies music festival. Visit on any other weekend, though, and you’ll find a charming laid-back tasting room with friendly staff and a range of superb good-value wines.
The Cloof Shiraz and barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc are the stars here, but The Very Sexy Shiraz and The Dark Side Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blend are top-notch everyday quaffers worth a try. And why not quaff a bottle at the farm restaurant, which offers down-to-earth country lunches at tables spread out on the lawn.
If you can tear yourself away from the table, head into the town of Darling, where the likes of Ormonde Private Cellar, Lanner Hill and Withington Wines are also worth a stop – don’t miss Withington’s Cinsaut-led Roan Ranger or Lanner Hill’s zippy Sauvignon Blanc.

D espite the winter chill, locals are keeping these three new artisan ice cream
makers busy by coming back again and again for irresistible winter flavour combinations that make you forget the absence of summer’s seasonal fruits and berries.
Moro GelatoStefano Moro and Heine van Wyk started Moro Gelato last year to bring authentic artisan gelato to Cape Town after learning the craft in Bologna, Italy. Only using fresh, natural ingredients and seasonal fruits for their sorbets, flavours change with the seasons. “Our chocolate gelato made with Belgian chocolate, our Marchese flavour and our pomegranate sorbet, are really making people excited, rain or shine,” says Heine. “People are catching on to our take-away ‘couch boxes’ and often take some of our gelato to dinner parties instead of the usual bottle of wine.” Find the latest flavours at the Mason’s Press, Woodstock shop from Tuesday to Friday, on Saturdays at the Oranjezicht City Farm market, and now also at Giulio’s Cafe in Loop Street.
Crumbs and CreamA waft of baking cookies on Sea Point’s Regent Road entices you in to a bright and cheerful ice cream parlour, opened by sisters Shahar and Or Peled in March. Their signature ice cream sandwiches are an exercise in decision-making. Choose from eight different cookies, (fresh from the oven, they are dense, tasty and chewy, including vegan and Banting options), then pick from around fourteen flavours of gelato made for them locally. Add spreads and sprinkles to create a truly decadent treat. “To keep winter warm,”
says Shahar,” we have limited edition winter flavours like banana choc chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, Nutella hot chocolate with whipped cream, and our brownie ice cream sandwich.”
Kristen’s Kick Ass Ice CreamOver in Noordhoek Farm Village, an exciting new scoop shop has been creating a raft of inventive, luscious flavours since December. Kristen Batzer makes all her ice cream in small batches from scratch: local, seasonal fruits, home-made cookie dough and marshmallows, and home-roasted nuts. For winter she says, “To replace the seasonal fruits and berries, I am creating more decadent, ‘full of good stuff ’ flavours. Twix (sweet cream, caramel drizzle, fudge drizzle, and home-made shortbread cookies), vanilla bean cream with dark chocolate and orange marmalade swirl, cookie dough, sweet cream with dark chocolate and home-made honeycomb, and luckily chocolate isn’t a seasonal ingredient because I use a lot of it!”

Ice cream in winter? Absolutely. These new Cape Town ice cream sensations are worth indulging in all year round
One of the oldest towns in South Africa, Riebeek Kasteel is known for three things:
olives, wine and art. After spending a weekend in this picturesque town, I found out it is so much more.
What to doRiebeek Kasteel has plenty activities on offer for any visitor – from a variety of first-class wine farms, to chic boutiques for all your shopping needs. During our stay we had to try one of their most famous exports: olives. The Olive Boutique, run by Derek and Susan, allows you to taste all manner of olives, oils, and tapenades. As a non-olive eater, I was firmly converted.
Art is, of course, another big export of this valley. We stopped by the charming art gallery, The Gallery, run by Astrid McLeod, owner of the Bloemendal Cottage. Here you can see artwork from local emerging artists, as well as established artists, such as Andre van Vuuren, Solly Smook and Clare Menck. You’ll be hard-pressed to leave without buying something.
Where to eat and drinkThere’s no shortage of eateries in this quaint town. There were two highlights for me: the first being Flagship Brew’s taproom and brewery, a favourite watering hole for locals and tourists. The brewery has five beers on offer: New World Lager, Summer Ale, Red Valley Ale, Siren IPA and the Octoberfest (a favourite of mine which is only available at the taproom), as well as a home-made ice tea for non-drinkers.
The second was Mama Cucina Italian Restaurant which serves up tasty country-style Italian fare. Keep an eye on their black board

filled with daily specials. We tried the slow-roasted springbok shank with tender-stem broccoli and cauli mash – comfort food at its finest.
Where to stayThe best part of our stay would have to be the stunning Bloemendal Cottage. The self-catering cottage is beautifully decorated and has two bedrooms and a warm, homely feel to it. The first thing you see when entering, is the welcoming veranda, complete with a braai area. For cooler nights there is a romantic fireplace in the lounge to keep you warm.
All in all, Riebeek Valley was not just a getaway, but an experience. I thorough-ly enjoyed my time exploring this little town. My suggestion to you is to book your weekend away today.

need to be prettied up, but as vital instruments that need to be cared for. There are three parts to this pedi:cure (cure for the feet): first the nails and cuticles are cleaned and treated, then the skin is taken care of, and finally the feet and legs are massaged. The result is gloriously healthy looking feet and a download of information on how to keep them that way.
And it’s the information, for me, that really sets this experience apart. Because it’s not just about having pretty nails, it’s about understanding what your feet and nails need to thrive, and incorporating that into your daily life. So you walk away with feet that are beautiful, and the knowledge to keep them that way. Best pedicure in the world? I think so.
I must be honest, I get very enthusiastic at times. I will often say something is fabulous,
wonderful, breathtaking even. But the best in the world? That’s a label I don’t often attach to experiences. That is, unless I am officially having the best pedicure in the world, courtesy of Mr Bastien Gonzalez himself, founder of the Bastien Gonzalez Pedi:Mani:Cure Studio that you can experience at the One&Only Hotel in Cape Town. Of course, it was a special treat to have Mr Gonzalez himself treat me to a pedicure – he is only in South Africa for a week out of every year, and the rest of the time he’s ever so slightly busy tending to the feet of celebrities and royalty. But in his absence, his Cape Town team is impeccably trained to give you what undoubtedly feels like the best pedicure in the world. That’s according to The World Spa Awards, too: Bastien Gonzalez (the brand) won the Best Brand 2015 Nail Studio last year.
So what is it that takes this pedicure to new heights? For starters, there is science behind it – podiatry. The feet are treated not as accessories that

Colour trends are definitely cyclical, with hues going in and out of style with
sometimes alarming regularity. One of the colours on the rise again for homes and decor products, is teal. The various shades of this colour got a bad reputation from their recent overuse in the 80s – not to mention their often hippie-ish associations – and mostly disappeared from the world of good taste for a few years.
The new breed of teals we’re seeing in home decor is much darker and richer than their cousins from previous decades. Unlike the more vivid incar nations that have been seen before, these trend colours are less turquoise and more deep and water-inspired. In walls and furniture, the colour is treated more like a neutral than a bright colour accent, giving a nature-inspired but still interesting look to spaces.
The new Gender sofa by Patricia Urquiola (available locally at Afritaly)
is a great example of this more grounded point of view on the colour – especially in the combination of teal and earthy brown. In products like appliances and plastics, it’s slightly brighter, however. In these items it’s almost an evolution of the lime green product trend that’s been hanging around for some time now.
As with all colour trends, teal will also have its time in the sun before fading into the background. The mind-set behind its appreciation at the moment is interesting, because it shows how we’re still seeking nature-inspired colours in our homes. Whereas previous teals were artificial and bright, the new generation appeals more to our desire for grounding.

Cut your electricity costs
WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: ISTOCK
F ew will argue that if cold, wet Germany can produce 7% of its electricity demand
via private individuals installing photovoltaic (PV) panels on their roofs, sunnier SA could be making even more significant strides into sourcing and providing cost-effective renewable energy.
The initial financial outlay may seem exorbitant but, like property, it’s a long-term investment that, over time, can recover its own costs — and even bring in returns.
The sweetener here would be feed-in tariffs through which national electricity suppliers pay homeowners for electricity they produce with their own renewables, but don’t use. This is happening in many parts of the world, and even in a corner or two of ours. It’s even conceivable that homeowners could make a profit over the lifespan of a rooftop PV generator.
Solar panels generate power by day, for electricity usage at night, with surplus power stored in battery banks that are drained overnight. Batteries are expensive, though, and need significant maintenance. It is far better to sell that
With electricity costs escalating, an unreliable power supply and the effect energy consumption has on the planet, homeowners are relooking whether it pays to spend so you can save on electricity
CUT YOUR POWER USAGE:
• When replacing appliances, use
energy-rated ones.
• Replace regular bulbs with low-
energy bulbs and LED downlighters
from reputable brands.
• Install a solar water geyser or a heat
pump, which typically saves about
two-thirds of water-heating costs.
• Install a solar-powered pump for your
swimming pool.
• Unplug unused electronics.
• Save with effective insulation: good
roof insulation will keep a home
warm in winter, and cool in summer.
Insulate large glass windows with
films or tints.
• Select individual room air condi-
tioners over ducted when installing
– you won’t cool unoccupied spaces.
surplus daytime power back to the grid energy provider.
Rethink your usageIt’s a given that we need to reduce our electricity consumption. It won’t be long before homeowners are affected by time-of-use tariffs, where peak-time electricity costs will rise. Whether you’re moved by the impact of your carbon footprint or simply want to save money – or both – it all starts with reducing consumption.

Magents brings its premium urban African clothing brand to Cape Town, opening its first concept store at Canal Walk

The idea of an African brand in those days was frowned upon. Most of us did not believe in ourselves, hence one of our first designs had a bold AFRICAN on the chest. The brand grew exponentially on the international market until 95% of sales were outside SA. Instead of expanding further, we chose to come back to our roots and restructure to retain the original spirit of the brand and grow our footprint here at home.
Q: Whydidyouchoosethisareatosetupshop?
A: Over the last few years we have gone through a total restructure of the line, moving our production to Africa from Asia and working with local Cape Town factories to develop the high-quality fabrics and washes we require. Now we are focusing on Magents concept stores in Africa first. Historically, Cape Town has not been our strongest region, but the opportunity at Canal Walk opened up first.
Q: Howdidyoufindyourpremises?A: We approached a couple of
malls and Canal Walk was first to have an available space.
Q: Whyaretheyideallysuitedtoyourbusiness?
A: The mall attracts a good mixture of international visitors and locals. This particular location within the mall isn’t, however, our ideal spot. As a premium lifestyle brand with a higher price point than our neighbours, there are better locations for us. It is a huge struggle to get quality locations for local brands in our malls. We hope to move within the mall once a suitable space becomes available.
Known internationally for the last 20 years as an authentic high-end African brand with
top-quality t-shirts, clothing, sneakers and Afro Vintage designs, Magents has come home. After several years without local retail stores, they opened in Canal Walk in January. Founder and creative director Didier de Villiers tells us more.
Q: Howdidyourbusinessstart?A: Magents started in the 90s. The
initial dream was to have different brands under one roof. This developed into a store with only Magents branded goods.

Saving Christmas
July is National Savings Month, but you can be forgiven if you hadn’t noticed. It’s
not exactly Christmas. That may sound flippant, but the comparison is deliberate. The contrast between the two is important.
Economically speaking, Christmas is all about spending. More money is spent on consumer goods over the festive season than during any other time of the year. It also goes without saying that consumer spending is important for the economy. It supports businesses, creates jobs and stimulates growth.
At the moment some might argue that South Africa needs its people to keep spending. The local consumer has been a steady source of support for the local economy over the last few years when other sectors have been struggling. There is, however, an ugly side to this consumption, and that is that for most of the last 15 years South Africa’s household savings rate has been negative. In other words, as a country we are steadily depleting our savings to fund our current spending habits.
This is a critical problem. Even though it might seem important that we keep spending to stimulate the economy now, we are making ourselves vulnerable if we don’t save to protect and build the economy in the future.
What’s important to remember is that saving is just deferred spending. When you save you are putting money away with the intention of having it to spend later. This is why countries with high savings rates are better able to handle economic downturns. Having built up household wealth when times were good, they have a buffer that allows them to keep up a level of spending in more difficult environments. People who save are also able to keep up their standard of living in retirement. That means that they smooth their consumption over their entire lives and also don’t become reliant on the state.
From the point of view of a country as a whole, higher levels of saving also mean that there is more capital available for banks, pension funds and asset managers to invest in businesses, both big and small. This allows them to expand and thrive.
This is why Savings Month is really quite important. It may not have any holidays, and there may not be bells and flashing lights at your local mall to make it seem special, but we can’t afford to let it pass without recognising the significance of its message.
As South Africans we have to save more. Our future Christmases depend on it.
South Africa’s
household savings rate was -0,8% in the first quarter of 2016, having reached a low of -2,7% in late 2013
National house price inflation trendsN ational house price inflation
was 5,27% at the end of May. The low and mid value
segments continue to buck the market trend by growing by more than 8% annually while the high and luxury segments are inflating at a lower rate – closer to 3% per year.
Lightstone recorded buoyant growth in the Gauteng metro with Ekurhuleni, City of Tshwane and City of Johannesburg growing at more than 6%.
While property inflation in Nelson Mandela Metro and Ethekwini continues to grow at roughly 4%, City of Cape Town continues to show exuberant growth at nearly 10,2%.
whose teams work in Hatfield, Brooklyn and Lynnwood, three of the suburbs with the highest demand for student accommodation.
The city is home to many thousands of students attending the University of Pretoria, the Tshwane University of Technology and at least six large private tertiary education institutions.
Much of this demand has been centred on Hatfield, which is immediately adjacent to the 1,120ha main UP campus, and literally hundreds of student apartments

have been built in the area in the past 10 years, mostly in the section to the west of Jan Shoba Street.“Prices of these apartments range, depending on their floor area and distance from the campus,” says Lombard. “We currently have bachelor or studio units for sale from R550,000, all the way up to around R950,000; one-bedroom units at prices from around R665,000 and two-bedroom units at prices starting from about R1m. Rentals start at around R3,000 a month for rooms in shared apartments and go up to R10,000 a month for two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments.”
A lthough much student accommodation is now bought, sold and operated by
international companies, institutions and real estate investment trusts, there’s still room for individual private investors. In the US, for example, privately owned off-campus accommodation still accounts for about 60% of all housing available to students. In SA, that percentage is believed to be even higher.
There is plenty of scope for such investors in Pretoria, says Bertie Lombard, the Rawson Property Group’s Waterkloof franchisee

Agent commentary
Beautiful historic streets lined with oak trees, a spectacular setting among mountains
and wine estates, and a world-class university at its heart, Stellenbosch is a town that feels alive all year round. In summer it overflows with international visitors attracted by its reputation as the gourmet centre of the winelands. Students keep the energy youthful, and a growing number of creative businesses and technological start-ups are born here, with the arts well represented too. So there’s a big city outlook with the closeness of a small town community.
It’s a very walkable town for residents lucky enough to live in the historic suburbs close to the centre, with tempting artisan bakeries and coffee shops on every corner, the botanical gardens to stroll in, and regular wine festivals and cultural happenings on the calendar. The high street stores are actually on the high street here – no out-of-town malls – and the only downside is the traffic if you do have to drive. Families settle here for the schools,
which have a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and enviable sporting facilities, and residents can use the Maties university sports facilities too. Within minutes you can escape the town bustle and be hiking to a waterfall in the mountain wilderness or in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.
A wealth of secure estates and golf estates cater for those who prefer a mountain view just out of the centre, with easy access to hiking, mountain biking and running trails through adjoining wine estates and nature reserves. Several of the Cape’s top restaurants are scattered around the Stellenbosch wine estates, so gourmet residents can choose between legendary names such as Rust en Vrede, Overture, Tokara, Jordan, Terroir, Delaire Graff and more. On weekends foodies and families flock to the markets – there’s Slow Food Market at Oude Libertas, Root44 Market, Blauuwklippen Family Market, and the Stellenbosch Organic Farmers’ Market just for starters. For a weekday artisan market vibe De Warenmarkt fills the gap.
