Garden Tips: ROSESRoses are such a beautiful addition to the home landscape. They do require some fall and winter care to ensure they stay healthy and look great in the upcoming spring and summer.

Roses vary in their cold hardiness and some need extra care to help them survive winter temperatures. Soil moisture prior to a hard freeze lessens damage to roots. Some roses will continue to bloom late into the fall. To harden for winter, reduce watering to slow growth.

Because of Colorado’s extreme cold and dry winds, most roses benefit from some winter protection in Colorado to avoid any damage.

There are a few simple ways to protect them:

Clean up: Roses may be subject to snow and wind damage if they have grown a lot during the year. To prevent damage from snow loading, prune all tall plants by one-third of their height in November. Otherwise, mid-April pruning is best. To help prevent the spread of some diseases, it is a good idea to remove all leaves and debris from the ground around Thanksgiving.

Dirt mounds: When the night temperatures drop to 20 degrees Fahrenheit for several days, mound soil over the rose crown. The soil should be eight to ten inches deep. Bring soil in from other parts of the garden to avoid disturbing the roots of the plant being covered.

Mulch protection: Mulching heavily around the base of the rose is also very helpful. Wait until late fall to early winter before adding mulch to the crown and graft of the rose. Options are purchased wood mulch, pine needles or boughs, leaves, or shredded newspaper. Mulching roses is very important because it helps retain warmth and moisture and protects crowns from extreme changes in temperature. Rose collars are widely available at garden centers or cages can be built from wire to hold the mulch around the base of the rose. In the spring after the danger of hard frost has passed, mulch should be removed gradually.

Burlap: Roses, especially climbers, can benefit from being completely covered with burlap during the winter to prevent desiccation from wind.

Of course to have the best luck with your roses, make sure you select an appropriate variety for this region, choose the proper planting site, and follow good cultural practices, and minimize insect and disease problems. Shrub roses are usually the hardiest and best-performing roses for Colorado, and come as fragrant, single-petaled or fuller flowers. English Roses developed by David Austin are part of this group. There are over 100 varieties and most are repeat flowering and fragrant with the flower form of the Old Garden Roses.

Roses can grow in most communities in Colorado. Colorado roses exhibit some of the most vivid colors seen anywhere in the country. With these few simple steps you will enjoy beautiful healthy roses in your yard next spring and summer!

Time to Shovel!

Be heart-healthy and back-friendly while shoveling this winter with these tips:

• If you are inactive and have a history of heart trouble, talk to your doctor before you begin shoveling.

• Avoid caffeine or nicotine before beginning the job. These are stimulants, which may increase your heart rate and cause your blood vessels to constrict. This places extra stress on the heart.

• Drink plenty of water. Dehydration is just as big an issue in cold winter months as in the summer.

• Dress in several layers, so you can remove a layer as needed.

• Warm up your muscles before shoveling by walking for a few minutes or marching in place. Stretch the muscles in the arms and legs, because warm muscles will work more efficiently and be less likely to be injured.

• Pick the right shovel for you. A smaller blade will require you to lift less snow, putting less strain on your body.

• Protect your back from injury by lifting correctly.

• Stand with your feet about hip-width for balance, and keep the shovel close to your body. Bend from the knees (not the back) and tighten your stomach muscles as you lift the snow. If you need to move the snow to one side, reposition your feet to face the direction the snow will be going.

• Most importantly - listen to your body. Stop if you feel pain!

Porch Lights Aglow

The long winter nights and short winter days are upon us again. The long, dark nights are the perfect opportunity for the criminal element to strike. The best way to prevent criminal activity is to keep the area well lit. If you are worried about cost, don’t be too concerned. Studies show

the demand is low at that time of day, so there is only a nominal cost. That makes the porch light a relatively inexpensive way to protect your valuables. There is much more expensive crime-fighting equipment out there, but the police even suggest that leaving your light on is the best deterrent to a would-be criminal. For the best savings, use a 40 watt, 130 volt bulb. Light also prevents accidents.

Winter Exercising Success

If cold weather and cabin fever is getting the best of your exercise plans, you may need to make some changes in your approach to your fitness routine. Exercise in cold weather may mean you need to wear warmer clothing, but it certainly doesn’t mean you need to stay indoors. Layers of clothing are better than one big, bulky layer. The layer closest to your skin should be moisture absorbing, while your outer layer should be water- and wind-proof. Be sure your clothing does not restrict your movement.

Even in winter, when exercising outdoors, don’t forget the sunscreen. You should also use lip balm that contains sunscreen of at least SPF 15. If you exercise in the evening, remember that it does get dark earlier, so wear reflective clothing.

As with any new exercise program, be sure to talk to your doctor before beginning to exercise outdoors if it is new to you. People with certain medical conditions, including heart or lung problems or asthma, may need to take special care. Also be aware of the signs of hyperthermia or frostbite. Knowing when to stop and go indoors is your best protection.

Garden Tips: Indoor PlantsWhile the garden and yard are put to rest until spring, our indoor plants get some well-deserved attention. We'd like to provide some general care tips for houseplants, some choices of houseplants that are ideal for sunny Colorado, and some helpful hints for "holiday" plants.

Watering with regular fertilization and light exposure are crucial to keeping houseplants healthy and happy. Always pay attention to the care guidelines for these key issues usually provided with plants at purchase.

Watering varies with plant type, location, container and planting media, and even sometimes the indoor temperature. If the plant prefers "even moisture," water when the surface feels dry to the touch. If the plant prefers to allow its soil to dry between watering, don't water until the soil feels dry below the surface. Water plants until water exits drain holes onto the saucer below, but do not allow plants to sit in excess water. If the plant prefers humid conditions, you can set the container on rocks in the saucer and let the excess water remain, making sure the water in the saucer does not allow wicking up into the plant soil. The plant's need for water should guide watering, rather than a set schedule. Generally, most plants will do well with an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer with a slow-release type being the most effective at keeping plants consistently nourished, though a liquid soluble can be very convenient to incorporate into watering. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, which vary by product and season.

While most houseplants prefer bright, indirect light, east and west facing windows will suit many houseplants if no better option is available. The remarkable houseplants that can thrive under low light, such as philodendrons and some ferns, are helpful choices for homes without bright light. The snake plant is an ideal houseplant that not only performs well with moderate to low light, but can also withstand

the bright light of a window with southern exposure in sunny Colorado. This difficult-to-kill plant also sometimes produces fragrant white flowers. Another plant that can manage a bright sunny window is the aloe vera plant. When potting aloe vera, use a heavy terra cotta pot for air circulation and to balance the plant's top-heavy growth. This plant is visually appealing, adds a tactile feature to decor and a popular first aid measure. Like aloe vera, the jade plant is another sun-loving plant that's easy to care for, offers interesting visual and tactual appeal, and requires a heavy pot (it is a slow grower that will live many years).

Christmas cacti, poinsettias, and bulbs for forced blooming are popular gifts and decorative plants this time of year. Christmas cacti are known as such for the fact that they usually flower in December. They are popular due to being easy to care for and their lengthy bloom time. Despite their name, they are not actually cacti and prefer a humid environment with bright, indirect light rather than dryness and direct sunlight.

When purchasing poinsettias, choose those with dark green, undamaged foliage as well as tightly closed flowers still holding their pollen for longevity (flowers are found at the base of the leaves). Poinsettias like lots of sun though they should be protected from cold or warm drafts. Water thoroughly as needed, and be sure to allow for drainage. Despite their reputation as dangerous to kids or pets, they are not poisonous.

Another popular plant around the holidays are bulbs brought to blooming for enjoying in the off season. If you'd like to continue to enjoy your forced-flowering bulb after the indoor flowering period by planting it outside, remove the spent flowers after blooming. Place the plant in a cool, very sunny location and keep the soil moist. Keep the leaves green and healthy as long as possible by fertilizing with an all-purpose houseplant formula. After the leaves die off, clean off the bulbs, allow them to dry out a bit and store the bulb in a very cool, dry, dark place, such as the fridge in a ventilated container like a brown paper or mesh bag with wood shavings. If the leaves never die off, plant the bulb after the last frost.
