General Information SectionIntroductionThe 317-7484 Communications Adapter 3Group is designed to be used with a dealersupplied laptop PC and related componentsfor transmitting data from a data linkconnection to the PC for data logging andanalysis. The 317-7484 CommunicationsAdapter 3 Group includes the communicationsadapter, data link cable, PC USB cable, andhard shell case with foam inserts.

Minimum PC RequirementsA dealer supplied PC (Laptop Computer) isrequired to download and operate theCommunication Adapter 3 (CA3) software.

Minimum PC requirements are:

• IBM® PC compatible with Pentium IV 2.4 GHz processor

• 512 MB RAM minimum

• 1 GB of available hard disk drive

• 40X speed CD-ROM drive or 8X speedDVD drive or greater

• 14.1” XGA screen (800x600) or greater

• Built-in pointing device or mouse

• USB 1.1 or 2.0 port

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater

Operation SectionInstallation of CommunicationsAdapter 3 (CA3) Software

1. Insert NETG5057 Media CD in laptop PC(dealer supplied) to install software and run“Caterpillar Comm Adapter 3.exe.”

2. The following screen should now bedisplayed:

Welcome to the Caterpillar Comm Adapter3 Setup Wizard. This wizard will guide youthrough the installation of Caterpillar CommAdapter 3. Close all other applicationsbefore starting Setup.

a. Click “Next” to continue.

3. The Caterpillar Comm Adapter 3 “ChooseInstall Location” window will display:

Choose Install Location

Choose the folder in which to installCaterpillar Comm Adapter 3.

Setup will install Caterpillar Comm Adapter3 in the following folder. To install in adifferent folder, click Browse and selectanother folder. Click Install to start theinstallation.

a. Select a destination folder location(default is recommended unless there isa need for a different location).

b. Click “Install.”

4. The following message may appear on theSoftware Installation screen:

The software you are installing has notpassed Windows Logo testing to verify itscompatibility with Windows XP. (Tell mewhy this testing is important.)

Continuing your installation of this softwaremay impair or destabilize the correctoperation of your system either immediatelyor in the future. Microsoft stronglyrecommends that you stop this installationnow and contact the software vendor forsoftware that has passed Windows Logotesting.

a. Click “Continue Anyway.”

NOTE: Anytime this “Software Installation”message appears during the installationprocess, click “Continue Anyway.” Thismessage is a default message that appearswhen a program has not been approved byMicrosoft. However, Caterpillar has takenextensive measures to ensure that thissoftware will operate correctly on your PC.

NOTE: For Windows Vista users, Steps 6-10 inthis section may not need to be completed, ifthe hardware installs automatically.

5. When the following message appears, theinstallation is complete:

Installation Complete

Setup was completed successfully.

a. Click “Close” to proceed to the nextstep.

6. Use 317-7487 Cable Assembly (3) toconnect Communications Adapter 3 (1) toPC (11) USB port.

a. Connect cable to CA3 (1).

b. Connect cable (3) to USB port on PC (11).

7. “Found New Hardware Wizard” window willdisplay, prompting the installation of newhardware for the CAT CA3 with thismessage:

If your hardware came with an installationCD or Floppy disk, insert it now.

a. Select “Install from a list or specificlocation (Advanced).”

b. Click “Next.”

8. The second “Found New Hardware Wizard”window will display with this message:

Please choose your search and installationoptions.

a. Select “Search for the best driver inthese locations.”

b. Select “Include this location in thesearch:”

c. Click “Browse” and select:

C:\Program Files\Caterpillar Inc\CommAdapter 3\Driver

d. Click “Next.”

9. The following message may appear on the“Hardware Installation” screen:

The software you are installing for thishardware:

CAT Comm Adapter 3

has not passed Windows Logo testing toverify its compatibility with Windows XP.(Tell me why this testing is important.)

10. When the software drivers are installed,the following message will appear:

a. Click “Finish” to close the wizard.

11. To view basic information about theCommunications Adapter 3, open the CA3Toolkit from “Start Menu” >> “AllPrograms” >> “Caterpillar Comm Adapter3” >> “Comm Adapter 3 Toolkit.”

How to Use the CaterpillarCommunications Adapter 3Using the CA3 Toolkit1. Before using the Toolkit software to

upgrade firmware, connect 317-7485Communications Adapter 3 (1) to dealersupplied PC (11) using 317-7487 CableAssembly (3). When using the Toolkit, theCA3 does not need to be connected to adata link connection.

a. Connect cable (3) to CA3 (1).

(1) Communications Adapter (CA3).(3) 317-7487 Cable Assembly.

b. Connect cable (3) to USB port on PC(11).

(1) Communications Adapter (CA3). (3) 317-7487 CableAssembly. (11) PC (dealer supplied).

2. To open the Communication Adapter 3Toolkit window, go to “Start Menu” >> “AllPrograms” >> “Caterpillar Comm Adapter3” >> “Comm Adapter 3 Toolkit.” If a CA3is connected, the Summary screen willdisplay a few seconds after start-up.

NOTE: If no CA3 is connected or it is notbeing correctly detected, a “No devicesdetected” message will display at the bottomleft of the screen. Make sure the CA3/PC USBcable is properly connected.

3. Three icon buttons are displayed at the topof the screen. Click the Summary iconbutton at the far left to display the Summaryscreen. The other two icons shown aredescribed in Steps 4 and 8.

4. To update the firmware, select the middleApplication Firmware Flash icon buttonwhich displays the options for firmwareupgrades.

a. Select a file to flash by clicking “SelectFile,” browse to and select the file. Click“Open.”

b. Click “Begin Flash” to send the file.Files should be of the type “.tar;” forexample, “R35_9-MAY-08.tar”.

c. Once flashing begins, the status barindicates the progress of the file transferfrom the computer to the CA3.

5. The file transfer takes approximately twominutes, at which point the following dialogbox with the following message will display:

The file transfer was successful. Pleasewait while the CA3 is reprogrammed andthen resets.

a. Click “OK.”

7. The CA3 display flashes indicator lights (1a) in sequence while it installs thenew firmware. When the installation iscomplete, the lights stop flashing. Theentire transfer and installation processshould take less than four minutes.

8. Click the Exit icon button on the right to exitthe Toolkit.

Using Cat Electronic Technician Withthe CA3To use CAT ET, the CA3 must be connected toa PC loaded with the latest version of CA3software and to a data link connection on themachine.

1. Connect CA3 (1) to PC (11) using 317-7487Cable Assembly (3).

(1) CA3. (3) 317-7487 Cable Assembly. (11) PC (dealer supplied).

2. Connect CA3 (1) to a data link using317-8981 Cable Assembly (2).

(1) CA3. (2) 317-8981 Cable Assembly.

3. Open Cat ET by selecting “Start Menu” >>“All Programs” >> “Caterpillar ET” >>“Electronic Technician.”

NOTE: When opening CAT ET with CA3 forthe first time, it may try to connect based onold settings.

If this occurs, click “Stop Connect.”

4. Go to “Utilities >> Preferences,” and thenselect the “Communications” tab.

5. Select the appropriate communicationadapter.

a. Select “Caterpillar Comm Adapter 3(RP1210)” from the list of availableadapters.

b. Select a preference (check the box) for“Enable Dual Data Link Service.”

Click “OK” to save these settings.

6. To connect the PC to the data link throughthe CA3, click the “Connect” icon button.

7. When the CA3 is first connected, powerlamp (1b) is YELLOW. In approximatelyone second, the light turns RED.

NOTE: While the CA3 is connected, the lightfor each data link being used will illuminate(J1939 - RED, CDL - YELLOW, and J1708 - GREEN).
