A typical 2500 square foot house has over a half mile of cracks and crevices.

For the most part, very litt le has changed in the home construction industry regarding energy effi ciency since the 1970’s. Why are most builders not building more energy effi cient homes? Oft en it’s because builders and home buyers are focusing more on “cosmetic” upgrades which visibly enhance a home than on behind-the-scenes upgrades which may contribute more to a home’s long-term value.

To the educated builder and homebuyer, energy effi ciency and thermal insulation are two of the most important long-term components of the house. Th e U.S. Department of Energy studies show that 40 percent of a home’s energy is lost due to air infi ltration.
