top 3 lessons acknowledge & embrace the power of EMOTIONS
fear of public speaking is not sensibly decoded
Rashid N. Kapadia’s opinion
NOT TRUE!
please … let’s be sensible
glossophobia is
real and
common
comparisons to fear of death
are utterly pointless
let’s decode
glossophobia
fight flight response
rigid body … shaking hands and knees
fight - flight response generates bodily sensations
flushed face … dry throat … swollen tongue
breathlessness … pounding chest
sweaty and clammy palms
only this … & … nothing more
stomach in knots
these sensations occur when
we fear being judged or ostracized by a large group
triggered by an ancient part of the brain
when a large number of people are observing us
educational video
there are plenty of coping techniques
when you experience these body sensations
perspective this too shall pass
practice! practice! practice!
fear is not a foe but a friend
Helen Hayes first lady of American theatre
a familiar companion
nagging me to do my best.
it’s a kick in the rear to prepare.
one of the first movie screenings Paris, France 1895
an interesting parallel
audience is said to have screamed and ran to the back of the room
this too was the FIGHT - FLIGHT
response activated
did people stop going to movies?
why should we stop speaking in public?
What about the other side of the coin?
What about the Joy of Public Speaking?
and throw it into the sea
it’s time to take this proclamation
fear of public speaking is greater than fear of death
anxiety associated with public speaking is
an inevitable bridge
this anxiety will pass !
farewell glossophobia

connection
to connect with an audience
we have to forget about being good and remember to be ourselves
they do not care what you know till they know that you care
we must learn how to receive their attention as support
to connect with an audience
develop capacity to listen while speaking
listen attentively with no agenda
listen attentively with soft and available eyes
