Delaware INBRE Bioinformatics Goals
• Creation of a new Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
• Increase in Cyber‐savvy Faculty and Students
• New Graduate Courses in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
• Integration with Biostatistics Resources at Christiana Care Center for Outcomes Research
• Integrated Cyberinfrastructure with Delaware IDeA Partner Institutions; i.e. NECC
NECC Cyberinfrastructure Upgrades in Delaware
Prior to NECC:
– UD is linked to Internet‐2 via MAGPI in Philadelphia
– INBRE‐funded Extension of Internet‐2 to DSU – 2006
NECC Enhancements:
– UD: Bandwidth Expansion to Lewes Campus (100 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps)Regional Datacenter at DBI & Environmental Monitoring in Lewes
– UD: Campus Backbone Upgrade & Distributed Data Center in Newark
– DSU: Redundancy loop across Dover Campus
– Wesley: Wireless access across Dover Campus
– DelTech: Campus‐wide cyber‐infrastructure upgrades at Georgetown Campus

Increased Use of Bandwidth
• Upgraded Connection from UD Campus in Newark to Lewes Campus from 100 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps in October 2010
• Significant increase in bandwidth usage over the past year

Major Improvements in Capabilities – Leveraged Programs
• Wide‐area Network (connecting UD with Internet/Internet2)
• Fiber ring (50 Gbps upgrade from 10 Gbps)
• I2/ION: on‐demand 10Gbps optical waves

• Upgrade from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps
• Reliability and Resilience
• Adding a second connectivity point

UD Cyberinfrastructure Upgrades
Research Support Initiatives
• Community Cluster Program (Mills Cluster)
• 5,136‐core HPC cluster, Infiniband network fabric, Lustre filesystem
• 14 Terabyte of RAM, 200 Terabytes of Disk Space
• Partners include DEMAC, Environmental Sciences faculty, DBI scientists
• Physical and Virtual Server Hosting
• Including major replacements of power generator, HVAC, UPS
• InCommon federated Authentication
• For multi‐institutional shared resources
• Provide a redundant 10 Gbps data network to academic buildings for NSF and NIH faculty and students
– Install new 10 Gbps fiber
– Create new Data Closets in several locations
• Install new Cisco Data Network Equipment to support 10 GbpsNetwork & UPS’s to protect the equipment
• Upgrade Internal Copper Wiring to support higher bandwidth
• Packet shape data traffic going into and out of DSU to speed up and control the type of data traffic

DTCC Cyberinfrastructure Plan
• Installation of 15 new network infrastructure switches to provide connectivity among all buildings on campus
• Installation of single mode 72‐pair fiber optic cable
that existing multi‐mode cable would not support
• Increased speed from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbpsto allow significantly enhanced connectivity on Campus as well as with UD and DSU.

Wesley CollegeCyberinfrastructure Upgrades
• Original Bandwidth Utilization to Campus was at 85% to 95% of capacity.
• Upgrade Campus Connection from 40 Mbps to 100 Mbps
– Completed in May 2011
• This bandwidth enhancement has had a significant impact on the graduate and undergraduate research capability at Wesley College.
