NSLA News Nebraska School Librarians Association Volume 4, Issue 4 Winter 2015 President’s Message Greetings everyone! With state conference in late October followed by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Conference in early November, many librarians have had the good fortune to hear from experts in the field at the local, state and national levels. I count myself among the fortunate. See my article, Conference Highlights, for information on our state conference. The AASL conference held, in Columbus, Ohio, was based on the theme, Experience, Education and Evolution. As Deb Logan and Kathy Lowe, conference co-chairs state, “[Librarians must] be the connection between evolution and revolution. We are not passive in this changing system. We are advocates for students, teachers, and learning.” In fact, our organization’s mission reads: The American Association of School Librarians empowers leaders to transform teaching and learning. What a profound and bold statement! But what does it mean to be transformational in teaching and learning? A transformation is a profound change – a metamorphosis, if you will, such as from the caterpillar to the pupa and from the pupa to the adult butterfly. I think of all the ways school libraries and school librarians are transforming: Continued on 5 AASL September Report Page 2 2016 NETA Conference Page 3 NLA/NSLA Conference Highlights Page 4
