Constable McCheane was 51 years old and survived by his wife, Mary, and seven children. Sheriff Jack Woods was shot and killed at about 6:00p.m. on Monday, October 16, 1882, while in Mindenattempting to arrest two horse thieves. Sheriff Woods,along with Kearney County Sheriff Ericson, went tothe Prairie Home Hotel after learning that the twosuspected thieves were taking their late meal there.Woods entered the front door of the hotel after havingwatched the men enter earlier, and drew his revolver.He ordered the two men to surrender. Waiting forEricson to come through the back door, Woods wassurprised when one of the men drew a pistol and shothim twice and died instantly. The two assailants fledtown but not before killing two more men, one of thembeing R. B. Kelley, the former sheriff and specialdeputy for Sheriff Ericson. His wife, Laura, survivedSheriff Woods.

Deputy Sheriff John W. Phillips died from a gunshotwound that he received on Friday, October 24, 1884,near West Bow, Nebraska. Deputy Phillips was trailinga suspect wanted in connection with setting fire to haystacks. Deputy Phillips and a posse located the suspectin a home, and he agreed to surrender, but only toDeputy Phillips. When Phillips entered the house thesuspect fired three shots. Two of them missed Phillips.However, the third fatally struck him in the lower partof his body. The suspect was later captured and takento St. Helena. He was lynched nearby on Saturday,October 25, 1884. Deputy Phillips was 57 years oldand survived by his wife.

Sheriff John S. Degman died on Tuesday, January 12,1886, at about 9:15 a.m. after being beaten with a pieceof firewood by a prisoner in the jail. Degman had goneinto the cell at about 8:00 a.m. to attend to the prisonerand was attacked. The prisoner escaped briefly but wascaptured by the former Sheriff. Later that night, agroup of men came to the jail, took the killer outside toa tree and hung him. Sheriff Degman had been swornin on January 2, 1886. He was 35 years old and single.

Greeley County Constable James P. Paxton died onFriday, April 10, 1891, near Pinnacle Springs,Arkansas, while attempting to arrest a former Nebraskaman on a warrant. Greeley County authorities hadreceived information that a a 39-year-old man wantedin connection with selling mortgaged property was inhiding in Arkansas. With a governor's warrent in hand,Paxton traveled to Arkansas, was told of the suspect'shideout in the woods, and led a group of Arkansasdeputies to arrest him. As Paxton waited for thedeputies to get into position, the suspect suddenlyemerged from his cabin, shotgun in hand, apparentlyplanning to do some hunting. As the man walked downthe laneway, unknowingly approaching the hiddenlawman, Paxton stepped out from his position andcommanded the man to surrender. He responded byslowly lowering the shotgun's barrel to his side, butquickly raised it again and fired as Paxton began toapproach. The charge struck Paxton in the face, killinghim instantly. The suspect was later shot by Arkansasdeputies and jailed. Constable Paxton was 41 years oldand survived by his wife and four children.

Special Agent William Ransom, 37, succumbed to ahead injury sustained on December 22nd, 1893, whileattempting to arrest a subject in Wahoo, Nebraska.Agent Ransom had been sent to the area to investigatea rash of recent burglaries. At approximately 10:00 pmhe observed a man getting out of a freight car in the railyards and attempting to arrest him. During the ensuingstruggle Agent Ransom was knocked to the ground andstruck his head on a railroad tie. He was taken St.Joseph's Hospital, in Omaha, where his conditioncontinued to worsen until he died of his injuries. AgentRansom had served with the Union Pacific RailroadPolice Department for five years. He was survived byhis wife, three children, and parents.

Department of the Interior and Pine Ridge TribalOfficer John Red Horse was killed on Thursday,November 15, 1894, in Rushville, Nebraska, whileattempting to intervene in a disturbance between twomen. Officer Red Horse had gone into one of thelodges at the camping ground when he heard thedisturbance. He found two men fighting and steppedbetween them. One of the men suddenly picked up apiece of wood and struck Red Horse. He fell to theground and the man dropped the piece of wood. Theother man then picked it back up and beat Red Horse todeath. Both men were later captured and tried for themurder of Officer Red Horse.

Table Rock Marshal Nicholas Craig was shot at about12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 1896, at therailroad depot. Marshal Craig had received word thathe should be on the lookout for men involved in aburglary in Falls City. He went to the depot to watchfor the men and checked the train that had recentlyarrived from Falls City. Craig observed as a strangeman enter the lunchroom and decided to watch him.The man asked to trade a revolver for some lunches forhimself and his two partners. Marshal Craigapproached the man and asked him to withdraw hishands from his pockets. The man drew out tworevolvers, shot Craig in the head, then turned and fled.Marshal Craig died about half hour later. He was 39years old and was survived by his wife, Agnes.

Omaha Officer Daniel D. Tiedeman was shot andmortally wounded at about 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday,June 9, 1897. Officer Tiedeman, who was investigatinga report of a burglary at a saloon near 13th andSpaulding, surprised the burglars and gave chase whenthey ran from the scene. He walked into a nearby firestation and collapsed. It was discovered that Tiedemanhad been shot in the stomach with a shotgun. OfficerTiedeman was taken to Clarkson Hospital but died atabout 1:00 p.m. that same day. He was 38 years oldand survived by his wife and daughter.

Falls City Officer Benjamin F. Stump died at about6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 1899, from asingle gunshot wound received at about 2:00 a.m. onWednesday, July 19, 1899. Officer Stump had gone tothe Missouri Pacific Depot, as was his custom, to meetthe train when it arrived. While waiting for the train,Stump began to check box cars and picked up twotramps. He began escorting them from the yard. Stumpstopped again and discovered someone in car #5763.He shined his lantern into the car and called for theperson to come forward. Without warning a shot rangout. Officer Stump was struck in the forehead and fellto the ground. He was able to make it to the depotwhere help was summoned. It was later learned thatOfficer Stump was struck with a .32 caliber round. Hesurvived for nearly a month before dying. OfficerStump was 22 years old and single.

Rulo City Marshal Alphonso J. Wake was shot andkilled at about 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27,1900, by a subject he had escorted from a bar in town.Marshal Wake had gone to Kanaly's Saloon andencountered several men causing a disturbance. WhenMarshal Wake instructed the men to calm down, one ofthem refused and threatened the lawman. MarshalWake escorted the man outside and was talking to himwhen the man suddenly pulled a hidden gun and fired.Wake collapsed and died. The suspect escaped but laterreturned and was captured. Marshal Wake was 55 yearsold and survived by his wife and seven children.

He was later takento his home located near Seventh Street and FourthAvenue where his condition deteriorated. It wasbelieved that he had suffered a brain hemorrhage due tothe blow that ultimately resulted in his death. OfficerPratt was 52 years old and was survived by his wife,Lydie, three sons and two daughters.

A man wasobserved attempting to steal coal from a Union Pacificcoal car. As Agent Gentleman approached the suspectto arrest him for theft, the thief pulled out a handgunand fired at him. Gentleman was struck and was latertaken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he died thefollowing day from his gunshot wound. Gentlemanhad previously been employed by the Platte CountySheriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff and as a policemanwith the Columbus Police Department. He was 49 tearsold and single at the time of his death.

Hedied a short time later. The soldier fled but was latercaptured. He was found guilty and spent seven years inthe state penitentiary for manslaughter. Marshal Mosswas 31 years old and single.

Omaha Detective Simon S. Drummy was shot andkilled at about 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, February 15,1908. The shooting took place at William Sawyer'sPool Room at 2607 "N" Street. Detective Drummy andDetective Shields had gone to South Omaha lookingfor a suspect involved in an armed robbery andshooting of Omaha Officer Lahey. When the officersarrived they observed a male standing behind a stove.As Drummy approached the man the suspect pulled arevolver from under his coat and shot Drummy once inthe head. Drummy tried to draw his revolver butcollapsed. Detective Shields shot and wounded thesuspect. The man later died from his wounds. DetectiveDrummy was 51 years old and survived by his wife,Katherine, and five children.

Omaha Officer Lafayette A. Smith was shot at about12:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 14, 1909, while onfoot patrol near 9th and Dodge. Officer Smith heard adisturbance nearby and observed a struggle between aman and a woman. When Smith stepped in to arrest theman as he attempted to rob the woman, the suspectdrew a revolver and shot the officer twice in theabdomen. Smith returned fire wounding the suspect inthe leg. Detective Devereese later observed the samesuspect at about 2:15 a.m. and was involved in a shoot-out. The suspect was wounded and surrendered. OfficerSmith died at about 1:00 a.m. from his wounds. Hiswife and children survived him.

South Omaha Officer Edward Lowery was shot andkilled at about 10:45 p.m. on Friday, February 19,1909, near 24th and "N" Street in South Omaha.Lowery had just arrested a man for vagrancy and, as heescorted the man down the street, the suspect suddenlyproduced a hidden revolver and shot the officer.Drawing his revolver, Officer Lowery returned firestriking the suspect twice before collapsing. Taken to anearby drug store, Lowery died a few minutes later.South Omaha Officer Harder captured the suspect ashort time later. His wife and three children survivedOfficer Lowery.

Sheriff Fuller obtained helpfrom three local men and went in search of themurderer. About a mile into Kansas Sheriff Fuller andthe other men found the suspect's trail and followed itto a small corncob shed near the Lepley School. AsFuller approached the suspect emerged and shot thelawman. The three men who had accompanied Fullerfled and returned with help, only to find that thesuspect had shot himself. Sheriff Fuller was gravelywounded and was taken to a nearby house where helater died. Sheriff Fuller was 53 years old and survivedby his wife, Lizzie, and several children.

Omaha Detective Thomas Ring was killed about noonon Wednesday, February 10, 1915. Ring met withCashman and Special Officer Phillips of BurlingtonNorthern and went to a rooming house located at 401North 15th Street, where the two men were to havebeen. Upon arriving, the officers went upstairs andannounced themselves. A warning came for the officersto stay away from the door. As Ring stood on awashstand and looked through a transom in an attemptto see what the suspects were doing, he was shot oncewith a .44 caliber revolver and died instantly. Twosuspects fled but one was captured a short distanceaway. The other suspect committed suicide to avoidcapture. Detective Ring was 54 years old and survivedby his wife and three children.

Members of the gang hadheld up a jewelry store at 1514 Dodge Street at about3:30 p.m. that afternoon. The officers raided thebungalow and encountered six gang members. As theybegan to search the room one of the suspects produceda gun and began shooting. Detective Rooney wasstruck in the abdomen and collapsed. He was taken toSt. Joseph's Hospital and died at about 2:00 p.m. onWednesday, January 31, 1918.

The suspect started down thestreet with Cooper behind, when he suddenly turnedand shot the detective three times. Detective Cooperwas taken to Clarkson Hospital where he slipped into acoma, and later died. Cooper was 41 years old, and wassurvived by his wife, Mamie, and a daughter.

Oneof the suspects was captured and the other was killednear Atlus, Oklahoma.

Albee later encountered the managain and a shootout ensued. Marshal Albee connectedwith a round from his rifle, but as he approached thefallen man, the subject fired a round and Albee wasstruck in the chest. He continued toward the fallen manand struggled with him, even striking him with hishandgun. However, Albee died at about 4:45 p.m.Marshal Albee was 45 years old and survived by hiswife, Edith, and seven children.

Seelman did leave town but whenhe returned on Saturday, July 13, Patrolman Green andanother officer were sent to find him. The two lawmenwent to the Humming Bird Inn on West 7th Street, withGreen checking upstairs, and the other officersearching downstairs. The other officer heard a shotgunblast and fled the building. Responding officers foundGreen shot in the head. Seelman refused to surrenderand later shot and killed himself. Officer Green was 43years old and survived by his wife, Helen, anddaughter, Virginia.

Nelson was shot at about noon onThursday, February 20, 1930, by a man who hadescaped from the State Insane Asylum in Hastings.Sheriff Nelson and Deputy Sheriff Richard Carlsonobserved the subject about 1 1/2 miles north of Sidneyand attempted to make contact. The suspect startedshooting as soon as Nelson stepped from the car. Hewas struck in the head and fell back into the car.Carlson attempted to flee and was shot twice butsurvived. The crazed man then returned and shotNelson once again in the car. The suspect was latershot by a posse that had been formed to capture him.Sheriff Nelson died at about 6:00 a.m. on Saturday,February 22, 1930. He was 54 years old, and wassurvived by his wife, Gertrude, and six children.

Thedetectives ordered the suspects to step out of their car,and as one of them stepped out, Kruger observed theother concealing something and grabbed for the man'ssleeve. The subject pulled away and, as Kruger spunaround to flee, the suspect shot him six times in theback. Mortally wounded, Kruger still managed to firefour shots at the fleeing suspect before collapsing anddying. Detective Strong chased the suspect but hemanaged to escape. He was later captured on thegrounds of Fort Omaha. Detective Kruger was an 11-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department and wassurvived by his wife.

Kelly and U.P. SpecialAgent Oscar Peterson, along with Richardson CountySheriff's Deputy Ivan Weltmer, observed a car as itpulled out of a dead-end lane on the J. M. Wickhamfarm. As the officers pulled up along side the suspects'car, shots were fired and Kelly was hit while seated inthe passenger seat. Upon opening the door ofthe car, Harrison was shot by the driver. The men, lateridentified as Joy Crow and Charles Robinson, escapedbut were later captured. The car they had fled containedstolen bags of sugar from a railroad car at the localyard. For the crimes, Crow was convicted andsentenced to 99 years, while Robinson was convictedand sentenced to 10 years. Officer Harrison was 40years old and survived by his wife, Annetia.

Sheriff George H. Brock was shot and fatally woundedon Wednesday, October 16, 1940. The shootingoccurred at about 12:40 p.m. at the Valleyview Schoolas draft registration was taking place. Sheriff Brockhad trouble with Richard Birkes about two weeks priorwhen he attempted to serve an eviction notice. Brockwas met with threats against his life when he attemptedto evict the family from their ranch. Knowing thatBirkes would come to the school for draft registrationon the 16th, Brock returned to Taylor and asked that awarrant be issued for him. When Birkes showed upBrock attempted to arrest him and a scuffle ensued.Brock was shot in the face and shoulder and died ashort time later. Birkes was captured and sentenced to25 years in prison. Sheriff Brock was 43 years old andsurvived by his wife, Lela May, and six children.

With the emergency red lights andsiren activated, Zink was eastbound on Highway #30when a gravel truck made a left turn in front of him.The driver of the truck was turning into the SiouxOrdinance Depot at the time of the collision. PatrolmanZink was 44 years old and survived by his wife, Wilda,and two sons, Ronald and Lyle.

A coroner's jury absolved the driver ofany criminal charges and he was allowed to leave formilitary duty the following day. Marshal Athey was 66years old and single. He had been the Marshal ofFairfield for five years.

Onthe east edge of North Platte, the origional suspectpulled out a .45 caliber revolver and shot the trooper inhis side. Trooper Rolfs died from his wound and thesuspect was later captured. Trooper Rolfs was 38 yearsold and survived by his wife and two children.

Hansen andCherry County Sheriff Bill Freeman had staked out anearby road, having received a tip that it would be usedby two suspects Ñ the Grandsinger brothers Ñ whiletransporting a stolen vehicle into the sand hills with theintention of stripping it for parts. The two lawmenstopped the suspects as they drove by, arresting LeonGrandsinger while brother Llyod fled from the scene.Hansen gave chase and was shot in the lower abdomenabout 200 feet west of the road. He died a short timelater. While Leon Grandsinger plead guilty tomanslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in theState Penitentiary, brother Lloyd appealed hisconviction and electric chair sentence, received a newtrial, and was acquitted and freed after a second trial.Hansen was 28 years old and was survived by his wife,Lorraine.

Heule had obtained a shotgunand came after the two men. Johnson instructedHadfield to run out the back door while he attempted tomake it to his car where he had a revolver in the glovebox. Hadfield escaped and watched in horror as SheriffJohnson was shot down in the laneway to the farm.Hadfield then saw Heule flee in his modified car, buthe was later captured in Kansas. Sheriff Johnson was60 years old and survived by his wife and threechildren.

Mr. Watson was pulling hiscar out onto the highway and Miller swerved to avoidstriking him. At the same time, Mrs. J. Bodlak washeaded home from her job in Walthill. She saw thepatrol car with the lights flashing and pulled off thehighway. Miller's patrol car struck Bodlak's car nearlyhead-on. Miller, Mrs. Bodlak, and Sheriff Newell wereall taken by ambulance to the Pender Hospital. Newellwas pronounced dead a short time after arriving.Sheriff Newell was sworn into office on January 5,1967, just two weeks earlier. He was 46 years old andsurvived by his wife, Fern, and six children.

Instead, thesuspect shot the lawman with a .22 caliber rifle that hadbeen stolen from a nearby hardware store. Vandermatecrawled to his patrol car and turned on the siren.Citizens came to the officer's aid and he was taken tothe hospital. He underwent surgery but died thefollowing day. Chief Vandermate was 32 years old andsurvived by his wife, Juanita, and four children.

A barricaded man had wounded several officersand an attempt was made to force him out with teargas. Nields, attempting to help, rushed up to the frontdoor. The suspect fired and struck him with a shot froma .12 gauge shotgun. He died instantly. Officers at thescene shot the suspect to death. Officer Nields was 29years old and survived by his wife, Kathleen, and twosons.

The suspect was captured and chargedwith Dobbertin's death following an extensiveinvestigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's Officeand area law enforcement officers. Dobbertin was 41years old and survived by his wife, Catherine, and threechildren.

Doctors attributedhis death to the stroke caused by the shooting. ChiefHenning was 72 years old and survived by his wife,Iona, and two sons.

A 15year-old suspect had failed to pay for gas at thePleasant Dale Interchange west of Lincoln, and anothertrooper stopped the suspect near the Utica exit. Theindividual tried to escape and the trooper gave chase.Farber took up a position along I-80 near the HamptonInterchange and waited for the pursuit to approach hislocation. As the suspect approached Farber's position,he suddenly swerved into the eastbound lane stillheaded west. Farber had deployed his patrol car in themedian and as the suspect approached, his car suddenlyswerved off the interstate and into Farber and his unit.Farber was killed instantly. Trooper Farber was 24years old and survived by his wife, Colleen. The couplewas expecting their first child who, following his birth,was named after his father.

Krejcitold Wamsley that he planned to do some targetpractice after lunch and invited him to accompany him.Wamsley arrived a few minutes later and discoveredKrejci face down in the snow at the bottom of a steepembankment. Officer Krejci was later pronounced deadat the scene. He was 40 years old and survived by hiswife, Rita, and five children.

The collision occurred at the junction of U.S.#20 and West 29th Street. The other trooper was notseriously injured. Deputy McManigal was 35 years oldand survived by his wife, Pamela, and three children.

Trooper Chab andTrooper Don Shepard were assigned to conduct atraffic checkpoint at that location and had beenworking traffic prior to the collision. Chab was killedwhen the woman failed to heed the posted warningsand struck another car prior to striking Trooper Chab.She later stated she didn't see a trooper or the warningsigns. Trooper Chab was 45 years old and survived byhis wife, Theresa, and two sons.

Deputy Sheriff Craig D. Dodge was shot and killed atabout 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 1987, whileresponding to a domestic violence call at an apartmentbuilding in Hickman. When he arrived, Dodge couldhear commotion inside the apartment. Knowing awoman's life was in danger, and with backup stillminutes away, Dodge advised his communicationscenter that an assault was in progress and went into theapartment building to intervene. He attempted to talk toa male suspect through a slightly opened door, whenthe man produced a hidden handgun and shot Dodge inthe face. Captured about 20 minutes after killingDodge, the suspect, Terry Reynolds, was laterconvicted of the lawman's death. Deputy Dodge was 42years old and survived by his wife, Barbara.

North Platte Police Sergeant Jerry L. Sukstorf died of aheart attack at about 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday,November 25, 1987, only a short 40 minutes after aviolent altercation with a suspected drunk driver. Sgt.Sukstorf stopped a subject identified as Joseph Burke atabout 2:15 a.m. and attempted to arrest him for DWI.The suspect resisted, Sukstorf called for assistance, andtwo additional officers responded. The officersstruggled with and finally subdued Burke, after whichthey took him to an area hospital. There, Burkecontinued his resistance and assaulted the officersagain. Sukstorf was visibly ill after the altercations, butchose to stay on duty. After returning to patrol,Sukstorf suffered a heart attack while driving, and hiscruiser struck a house. Efforts to revive him wereunsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Great PlainsRegional Medical Center. Sukstorf was 53 years oldand survived by his wife, Nancy.

Nebraska State Trooper Donald Matejka died onWednesday, December 27, 1989, at about 11:20 p.m.Trooper Matejka and Trooper Bob Totten hadresponded to a domestic violence call at a mobile homepark north of Norfolk just off Highway #81. Matejkaand Totten contacted a subject later identified as RandyRogers. While Totten spoke with Rogers, Matejkaspoke with the female subject involved. When Rogersattempted to leave he was stopped by Matejka. Astruggle occurred and Matejka suffered a heart attack.Matejka was transported to Norfolk Hospital but waspronounced dead on arrival. Trooper Matejka was 56years old and survived by his wife, Carolyn, and fourchildren.

Gothenburg Police Sergeant Glenn H. Haas was shot inthe front lobby of the police department at about 3:15a.m. on Monday, July 2, 1990. A local 17 year-oldmale who had earlier been cited for criminal mischief,had come to the police department asking to speak toan officer. Sgt. Haas, who was present but off-duty andin plainclothes, responded to the request and was shotas he stepped out of the office entrance and into thelobby. He was struck once with a 30.06 round firedfrom a rifle the suspect had hidden around a corner.Sgt. Haas was taken to the Gothenburg Hospital andlater life-flighted to Good Samaritan Hospital inKearney, where he passed away. The suspect was laterarrested and convicted, and is serving a life sentence.Sergeant Haas was 42 years old and survived by hiswife, Janet, and two children. Janet's brother will alsobe listed in the Memorial. He was Deputy SheriffKenneth Wolf of Frontier County, who died of a heartattack suffered while on duty in 1997.

Officer Wilson was shot at about 8:00p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 1995, while initiating atraffic stop on a vehicle near 40th and Blondo. Asuspect in the stopped vehicle stepped out and openedfire on Officer Wilson while he was still seated in hispatrol car. Officer Wilson was rushed to the hospitalwhere he was listed in grave condition until he passedaway the following morning. Officer Wilson was 24years old and engaged to be married at the time of hisdeath.

Heresponded and carried the injured subject from thescene to the roadway. Afterward, Wolf suffered chestpains and died from a sudden heart attack. DeputyWolf died on his 51st birthday. His wife, Jeanette,along with his two daughters and one son, survivedhim. Deputy Wolf's brother-in-law, Gothenburg PoliceSeargant Glenn Haas, will also be listed on theMemorial. In 1990 Seargent Haas was shot in thestation lobby and later died in a Kearney hospital.

Trooper Wagner was 37 years oldand survived by his wife, Denise, and three children.

The driver of the pickup truck waswestbound and making a left turn into a parking lotwhen the two vehicles collided. Officer Holloway waspronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truckwas later arrested and charged in connection withHolloway's death. Officer Holloway was 36 years oldand survived by his wife and four children.

He waspromoted to Sergeant during his time in the hospitalprior to his death.

He eventuallycalled a tow truck, whose driver discovered Phillipsslumped over in the front seat. Emergency personnelwere immediately dispatched, however he was laterpronounced dead at Annie Jeffrey Memorial CountyHealth Center in Osceola. Sergeant Phillips was 56years old and is survived by his wife, Jennifer and histwo sons, Shannon and Matthew.

The inmate, whowas awaiting trial on an armed robbery charge,attacked and strangled Officer Baker after she enteredhis cell at approximately 2:00 am. She was transportedto Regional West Medical Center where she waspronounced brain dead. She was kept on life support soher organs could be donated. She passed away onFebruary 16th, 2014. Officer Baker had served with theScotts Bluff County Detention Center for just over 1-1/2 years. She is survived by her son.
