  • SESSIONS & SPEAKERSBREAKING THE RULES: ECOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN & TRADITIONAL LANDSCAPE METHODOLOGYUsing native plants requires more than simply expanding the conventional design palette. Based on observation of how native plants develop in nature, new design, implementation, and management techniques emerge, many of which are diametrically opposed to traditional horticultural practice. This presentation examines how alternative approaches on everything from selecting, arranging, and spacing plants to the simple act of weeding can yield more easily maintained landscapes that express the beauty and ecological richness of our native landscapes.

GROWING, PLANTING AND MAINTAINING NATIVE PLANTS: TURNING A CHALLENGE INTO AN OPPORTUNITY For years ‘native landscaping’ was considered a hard sell. Not anymore. The question is now; Do growers, designers and contractors have the wherewithal to effectively and consistently provide it? In this presentation we will discuss the specific changes, many of them dramatic, that could help nursery and landscape professionals take advantage of this fast-growing movement.

LARRY WEANERLarry Weaner has been creating native landscapes since 1977. He founded Larry Weaner Landscape Associates in 1982 and has gained a national reputation for combining ecological restoration with garden design traditions. In 2008 he received the top three design awards from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, and his work has been profiled in regional and national publications, including The New York Times. An active guest lecturer and instructor for horticultural and environmental organizations throughout the U.S, he developed New Directions in the American Landscape, a conference

series dedicated to advancing the art and science of natural landscape design.

OPTIMIZING BIOMECHANICS OF THE PRODUCTION ARBORISTPre-job hazard surveys are done to evaluate tree biomechanics, which can be influenced by cracked limbs, hollow trunks, and decaying root systems. These are red flags indicating the tree may be unsafe or unstable. Symptoms of pain, tingling, weakness and cramping can be indicators that the tree worker’s musculoskeletal system is compromised, increasing the risk of an injury. Altered biomechanics can be the reason for these symptoms. We will focus on the tree worker’s biomechanics and the common musculoskeletal trends of the industrial athlete. Optimizing the tree worker’s biomechanics can increase productivity and reduce injury risk. Demonstration and instruction in basic exercises and stretches to enhance the biomechanics of the tree worker will be included.

CREATING A MOVEMENT THAT INSPIRES ACTION: TEAMWORK FOR THE BETTERMENT OF TREE CAREOur health and work productivity are influenced by a number of lifestyle factors, including how much stress we have and how fulfilled we are by the work we do. We believe that people are entitled to have a job where they feel connected and accepted and are able to do meaningful work. We will discuss how optimal employee engagement can improve morale, safety, productivity and the health of the workforce.

VITALITY HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR ARBORISTSVitality is the capacity for survival or the for the continuation of a meaningful or purposeful existence. Optimal health reduces the risk of a work-related injury, lowers the risk of chronic disease and ensures a quicker recovery should an illness or injury occur. A career in the green industry can be beneficial to your health. We will discuss the health benefits of working in the field of arboriculture, while teaching you how to improve and maintain your health to continueto work comfortably in this demanding industry for years to come.

During her 13 years in the industry, she has been a production climber, an ITCC competitor, and a tree company owner. She has come to realize that her own limiting beliefs as a female in a male dominated industry initially held her back. Experience and the support of other Arborists allowed her to gain the confidence she needed to successfully advance in her career. She has come to realize that she is fulfilled by her work when she is pursuing her own life’s goals and working alongside others with common beliefs. She will share her experience in the tree careindustry and what she has learned about herself on her journey in arboriculture.

  • SESSIONS & SPEAKERSDEFINING CORE VALUES, COMPANY CULTURE AND DEVELOPING LEADERSThis is a lesson from the trenches of business ownership: what we have learned about the importance of defining core values, company

culture, and leadership development to grow a better business.

JEFF GREWEJeff Grewe is an Omaha Native. He graduated from Creighton Prep High School and attended the University of Iowa and UNO before starting Arbor Aesthetics Tree Service in 2005. Since that time, Arbor Aesthetics has grown to a 12 person company which he operates with this wife, Amy. Arbor Aesthetics has won Best of Omaha 4 times. Jeff enjoys the study of culture, sales, and leadership. He spends his free time with his wife Amy and his two sons, Miles and Roy.

THE COST OF LOW COMMUNITY FOREST DIVERSITYAs invasive pests, droughts, and development threaten the health and stability of our urban forests, the importance of species diversity has been brought back to the forefront. Dutch elm disease spurred many communities to diversify their tree species and emerald ash borer serves as a reminder that managing diversity is not a set-it-and-forget endeavor. Public and private tree inventories will be used to look at how to continually diversify our urban forests for current and future issues.

IF TREES COULD SCREAM: HOW TREES RESPOND TO PEOPLEDo trees silently scream when pruned or thank you for improving their structure and function? What happens when trees have too

little or too much sunlight? From pruning to over pruning, tree injections, and site selection, explore the physiological response of trees to the actions of arborists and homeowners.

ERIC NORTH, PH.D.A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Eric North is now an Assistant Professor of Practice at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His research has focused on what tree rings tell us about urban tree growth. Currently Eric is developing new degree in urban forestry and arboriculture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He serves of the ISA Science and Research

Committee and is a founder of Brewing a Better Forest, a non-profit engaging citizens to water trees. Eric is also an ISA Certified Arborist.

VIBURNUM - A GENUS OF GREAT DIVERSITY AND FUNCTIONALITY WHOSE SUM OF THE SEASONS ARE GREATER THAN THE PARTSDuring his career, Gary decided to pursue his real passion, which was collecting, growing, and promoting the genus Viburnum. He has been in constant contact with all types of plants, both herbaceous and woody, but he was particularly attracted to viburnums because of their diversity and four seasons of landscape interest. He was also concerned that they were being underutilized due to a lack

of knowledge of the vast number of species and cultivars that the genus offered which in turn led to limited availability through garden centers, online nurseries, etc. By specializing in this one genus, he and his wife Susan would become the largest grower and collector of viburnums in the United States with over 200 species and cultivars currently in their inventory. Their current emphasis is producing liners and container plants for their wholesale division and retail container plants for their internet gardening enthusiasts. Gary is

passionate about promoting this diverse genus by educating nursery professionals and gardeners alike through their website and seminars.

GARY LADMANGary Ladman graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1971 with a B.S in Agriculture with an emphasis in horticulture. Since that time, he has been involved in almost every aspect of the nursery and landscape industry including landscape design and installation, sprinkler design and installation, lawn maintenance, bedding plant production, and owner of his own garden center.

THE FUTURE OF THE COMMUNITY FOREST IS IN THE GREAT PLAINSNebraska is known for an annual temperature range of more than 130 degrees and nearly 60 degree temperature fluctuation within 24 hours. Toss in impacts of herbicide damage, invasive insects and cultural impacts we are truly a testing ground for what the future of community forests can and may look like within an extreme and changing climate. Given the life span of a shade tree is 100 plus years how do we anticipate and manage this resource so it can reach maturity and provide generational benefits.

ERIC BERGEric Berg is the Community Forestry and Sustainable Landscape Program Leader with the Nebraska Forest Service, based out of the NFS state office on East Campus, University of Nebraska, and Lincoln. He works with approximately 15 staff to implement state-wide programs including collaborating with those of the statewide non-profit Nebraska Statewide Arboretum.

Eric originates from Colorado where he attended Colorado State University and studied natural resource management. His previous work experience includes range conservation work in South Dakota; Forester with the Colorado State

Forest Service; Research Associate with Colorado State University; District Forester with Kansas Forest Service and Community Forestry Program Coordinator. Eric joined the Nebraska Forest Service in 2006.

Other related experience includes serving as a board member and past president for the Midwestern Chapter of ISA. He has also served on the ISA Council of Representatives Executive Committee. He has also been an active participant of state arborists associations including ex-officio board member for the Kansas Arborists Association and Nebraska Arborists Association. He is a member and certified arborist and municipal specialist with ISA as well as maintaining ISA Tree Risk Assessment qualification.

THE SUSTAINABLE GREAT PLAINS LANDSCAPE BUILT LANDSCAPES THAT ARE A GOOD FIT IN THEIR NATURAL ENVIRONMENTStrong and lasting landscapes are based on environmental realities. The parent soils, the weather cycles, the seasonal responses of plants and animals. When we take into account our native soils, water, weather, and wildlife, we develop more beautiful, useful, and healthy surroundings.

Topics include practical aspects of soil work, water use, and plant selection, and some of the processes for planning, planting, and developing the campus landscape of Chadron State College in Nebraska’s Pine Ridge.

LUCINDA MAYSLucinda Mays serves as horticulturist for Chadron State College in the Pine Ridge of northwest Nebraska. She works with the college grounds crew, students, and volunteers to improve CSC’s 281 acres.

Ms. Mays has worked in public horticulture for more than 30 years; as assistant director of Kalmia Gardens in South Carolina, as Horticulture Curator at Callaway Gardens in Georgia, and for 10 years hosting segments of the popular PBS television program, "The Victory Garden." She worked with Iowa Public Television to create,

“Iowa’s Favorite Gardens.” For several years, Mays reviewed books for the American Horticulture Society, wrote gardening articles for Southern Living magazine, and contributed garden columns to the Chadron Record newspaper.

Ms. Mays grew up in Buffalo County, Nebraska, and returned to her home state in 1998. Lucinda is proud to note that the Chadron State College arboretum received the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum’s Affiliate Site Award, presented to recognize public gardens that “demonstrate excellence in collection development, maintenance practice and community engagement.”

  • SESSIONS & SPEAKERSCLIMATE AND PESTS: CHANGE IS IN THE AIRClimate has a large role to play in the development of pest species and of our plants. As we see more extreme climate variability now and in the future, problematic pathogens and insects may also become more of an issue. Kyle Broderick and Jonathan Larson will

discuss the science behind these issues and help shed light on how we can prepare.

JONATHAN LARSONJonathan Larson is the Nebraska Extension entomologist for Douglas and Sarpy counties. He graduated from Purdue University with his bachelors in entomology and the University of Kentucky with his doctoral degree. His role is to provide entomological assistance for the general public as well as practitioners in the Omaha, NE area. His main focus is pests of the lawn and landscape but he also helps with bed bugs, roaches, and any other home invader that has

six or more legs. You may have also seen him as panelist on NET’s Backyard Farmer program.

KYLE BRODERICKKyle Broderick is the coordinator for the Plant & Pest Diagnostic Clinic. He received his bachelor’s degree in plant protection sciences and master’s in agronomy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Kyle believes that knowing one’s enemy is the first step towards beating it. He and the clinic can help diagnose plant disease and insect problems and provide management recommendations. Additionally he is involved in Master Gardener program at UNL and a panelist on NET’s Backyard Farmer.

DRONES IN THE WORKPLACEBrian will show a few different ways to use a drone for advertising and also ways to use it as a work tool, for what we do. In addition,

he will go over basic information on drones as well as FAA regulations.

BRIAN BYERSBrian Byers is the co-owner of Great Plains Nursery. Brian uses drones to make promotional videos for the nursery as well as a tool to do site observation and to check the progress of planting projects of the years.

But he is no ordinary keynote speaker. Devin incorporates comedy, magic, and soccer skills into his audience-interactive message. He has presented in all fifty states except Hawaii, Alaska, and about fifteen others. “Devin Henderson
