Bruton Parish Episcopal Church www.brutonparish.org April 2015 CHRONICLE The By The Rev’d Chris Epperson We are nearing the end of our journey through the season of Lent. It has been a serious and profitable time. I hope that in worship, classes and personal discipline all have known the nearness of God. The shift is at hand. Together, we end the walk to Jerusalem with Jesus, and enter the holy city. What will happen there is well known to us. The conflict will escalate and reach the breaking point. Betrayal, arrest, trial and the breaking of the Son on Man come soon. It is a hard story. The events are difficult to watch and recount. Reliving the horror of it all, one might be forgiven for asking why. Why do we continue to dwell on this piece of the Jesus story? Why not live simply with Jesus’ teaching and preaching? Why not focus on all positive and building- up moments from Jesus’ ministry? Why not get right to resurrection and new life? We do not revel in the horror. We are not celebrating the violence and the suffering. In the holiest days of the Christian year, we witness the depth of God’s love in the passion of Jesus. In the name of God’s love and solidarity with human persons, Jesus embraced the human condition, all of it. In Jesus’ life, ministry and death, Jesus personally encountered the entire scope of human life. Jesus’ unswerving commitment to his vocation is faithfulness. Holy Week is not so much about horror as it is comprehensiveness. God has known all we know in Jesus. God has chosen to be faithful to us. This week and the new life born from it is a testament to the mystery. God is in it all. There is meaning and possibility in each moment. God has taken our worst and made new life. New life, transformed life, resurrected life is born in faithfulness. CHRONICLEThe

By The Rev’d Chris Epperson

We are nearing the end of our journeythrough the season of Lent. It has beena serious and profitable time. I hope thatin worship, classes and personaldiscipline all have known the nearnessof God.

The shift is at hand. Together, we endthe walk to Jerusalem with Jesus, andenter the holy city. What will happen

there is well known to us. The conflictwill escalate and reach the breakingpoint. Betrayal, arrest, trial and thebreaking of the Son on Man come soon.

It is a hard story. The events aredifficult to watch and recount. Relivingthe horror of it all, one might beforgiven for asking why. Why do wecontinue to dwell on this piece of theJesus story? Why not live simply withJesus’ teaching and preaching? Whynot focus on all positive and building-up moments from Jesus’ ministry? Why not get right to resurrection andnew life?

We do not revel in the horror. Weare not celebrating the violence andthe suffering. In the holiest days ofthe Christian year, we witness thedepth of God’s love in the passion ofJesus. In the name of God’s love andsolidarity with human persons, Jesusembraced the human condition, all ofit. In Jesus’ life, ministry and death,Jesus personally encountered theentire scope of human life. Jesus’unswerving commitment to h isvocation is faithfulness. Holy Week isnot so much about horror as it iscomprehensiveness.

God has known all we know inJesus. God has chosen to be faithfulto us. This week and the new life bornfrom it is a testament to the mystery.God is in it all. There is meaning andpossibility in each moment. God hastaken our worst and made new life.

New l i fe, t ransformed l i fe,resurrected life is born in faithfulness.

Your Bruton Parish ShopBy Leith Merrow Mullaly

When you think about shopping along the Dukeof Gloucester Street at one of the lovely andunique shops, I hope you ALWAYS think of yourParish Shop — right at the top of your list. Doyou need:

A birthday card? A handsome piece of handmade jewelry? Episcopal prayer beads/rosary? One of the charming DEMDACO figurines to

celebrate a wedding or birth? Distinctive hostess gifts? Notecards? An Episcopal Church car decal?

These are just a very small sample of itemsto be found at your very own Parish Shop. Bestof all, the Shop supports the mission and outreachprojects of our church. Shouldn’t we all beconsidering where profits go when we shop?Just think, profits for the work of Bruton outreach

are surely more important andsatisfying than contributing to theprofits of a secular store. I think thechoice to do good things with ourpurchases is an easy choice!

In addition to a friendly, relaxedshopping experience, your BrutonParish Shop is also a great place to“work.” Volunteering in the Shop ishonestly FUN. It allows you tointeract with the many Williamsburgguests and tourists from all acrossthe United States and someinternational visitors as well.Additionally, you will thoroughlyenjoy the folks with whom you are

volunteering. It’s a wonderful way to expandyour friendships at Bruton.

If you want to know more about the chanceto volunteer, please contact Jean Winters([email protected] or 757-564-1662).
