NCPAPA DLPFor Digital Learning

Journey of a Digital Leader

● Congratulations to you all on your accomplishment! You are NC's first cohort/graduates of a program that has taken a bold step in acknowledging, training and celebrating accomplishments in a new, growing field of school leadership

● On that note, thanks to Shirley, the NCPAPA Board, Emily, and all of you all for hosting me and my wife.

My Journey

West Montgomery High School

West Middle School

Spring Lake Middle School

● Brief history of Derek L. McCoy● My journey as atypical - Haven’t been at one school

or even solely school based administrator● Influenced by exposure and leadership to new things

at high school, central office and middle school● Our role and duty is to plan learning and teaching

experiences new learner and a new world

Digital LeadershipAgain, I applaud you on your work and effort in this undertaking. Our leadership efforts aren’t about analog vs digital, ebooks vs textbooks, f2f vs blended vs virtual -

It’s about your journey to improve student learning!

Sometimes a working model needs to be changedWe can’t afford to have the field of education/schools to suffer a fate like Blockbuster

● The nature of jobs, post-secondary education has changed, is changing, and will change

● Video Killed the Direct Instruction - Flipped learning is real, self directed instruction is here

● If Google Can Answer Every Question…what is a valid assessment (hint: it can’t answer every question)?

● The Classrooms Walls are being ripped down whether we like it or not

● The World Is Flat…Which Means More People Have Opportunities that didn’t exist before

Our learners are different and they learn differently (their brains work differently, awesome article from Wired)

Newer, Smarter Learnershttp://www.edudemic.com/internet-making-kids-smarter/

● Think of what the implications of having superconnected device in our pockets mean for us and learners

○ Connected for simple answers

○ Resources○ Answers○ Attended a graduation

recently where the Sal thanked two entities that helped her and her classmates tremendously. Without them, most would not have graduated or done as well - Wikipedia and Google

● Smarter learners○ more social○ writers, better writers - they

write more○ Increased interest in reading

● UNFETTERED ACCESS TO INFORMATION/LEARNING

● STUDENTS ARE A DECISION AWAY FROM MAKING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS ON THEIR OWN

Now the PrincipalshipSchool leadership skills are always evolving, the skill set is changing:● Think in terms of the 'one-room schoolhouse' to the large complexes

we have now● At some point in history, school leaders had to become better social

workers● Then, better at school operations like scheduling● Then learning theory● Then Data● Then social work and so on● Now we are at the beginning of the new dive into digital leadership

Why Engage in this work?

● To be effective, to be impactful to others, you will have to become passionate about making learning and teaching different

● Take a measure of where your school and kids are, what do you want to accomplish, and dig in

● Focus on that merit and that work and that value

West Montgomery HS● Great experience as an AP in a small

district● District vision was to provide better, global

learning opportunities● We had to commit and grow and learn and

connect● Educate ourselves on what disruptive

practices could do

As a Principal● Two Title 1 schools, urban and rural● Two different goals: WMS changing teacher

practices, support, exposure; SLMS changing teacher practices, support, resources, exposure, connecting, hands on training

● Student learning outcomes - a priority■ what do we want students to know,

BETTER way to deliver

My Journey● Has been about seeing possibilities● Working with great people● Connecting with my PLN

BHAGs● My kids need to work at Google● My kids need to design Amazon drones● My kids need to design new apps● My kids need to work in fields they create

Why Change is Has to Happen ● Read an article last night that talked about

digital equity is a social justice concern○ learning opportunities for kids○ students who don’t have access are at a

disadvantage

Your Work● Be ready to share and bring along● Be ready help support, above and below● CONNECT

Focuses

Vision and Support“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”
