While Polish research now has expertise in many of the technologies needed for energy transition, it lacks critical knowledge in modelling,planning, integrating, and managing large-scale renewable energy systems in a flexible and effective manner. The SuPREME project twinsone of Poland’s best energy research centres, the Instytut Maszyn Przeplywowych im. Roberta Szewalskiego Polskiej Akademii Nauk withneeded expertise in Denmark (Aalborg University), the Netherlands (University of Twente), and Austria (European Sustainable EnergyInnovation Alliance). Focusing on needed knowledge transfer in integrating energy technologies, the project’s well-formulated mix ofextended staff exchanges, joint work, Summer Schools, and other events will create a long-lasting and effective partnership that will have avery significant impact on Poland’s energy systems infrastructure and climate footprint.

Specific project objectives (1)

• To understand Poland‘s unique energy requirements and develop a technical transition plan coherent with EU and national guidelines and targets

• IMP PAN team participates actively in activities of the working group in the Ministry of Energy in the field of „energy clusters“ (new RES Act)

• Basing on experience of Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria

• They attend the proccess of establishing a national programme on „micro-energy clusters“

• IMP PAN has access to the online platform of MoE on energy clusters

• IMP PAN participates in the meetings of the parliamentary Committee on Energy and State Treasury

• IMP PAN team is involved in e-mobility topic – new very important issue for the Ministry of Development and the Ministry of Energy

Twinning Goals Contribution of SUPREME

Significantly strengthening a defined field of research in a

particular knowledge institution (...) by creating a link between

this institution and at least two internationally-leading

research institutions in other Member States

Through SuPREME, critically needed knowledge in the field of

energy system integration is transferred from Denmark, the

Netherlands and Austria to Poland through staff exchanges,

events, and long-term collaboration.

Enhance the S&T capacity of the linked institutions Technical expertise is shared in Poland through collaborative

research activities and exchanges, greatly increasing S&T

capacity.

Help raise staff’s research profile as well as the one of the

institutions involved

Through staff exchanges and long-term collaborations, IMP-

PAN’s scientists are exposed to new environments and levels

of excellence, raising their research profiles and capacities.

Address networking gaps and deficiencies between the

research institutions of the low performing Member States and

regions and internationally-leading counterparts at EU level

By joining together with three anchors of EU excellence in

Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria, IMP-PAN is better

integrated into the international research community.

WP1 Energy Systems in Macro Scale – Reaching Objectives

• IMP PAN researches will gain crucial expertise in the fields of energyscenario design and simulation on the macro level through mobility

• IMP PAN researchers are able to work with new tools (EnergyPLAN, energyPRO, Homer, MATLab SimuLink)

• IMP PAN is using these tools now in a high-budget project in the field, won in a competition within a strategic B+R programme on the national level

WP2 Energy Systems in Micro Scale – Reaching Objectives (1)

• IMP PAN researches will be helped to broaden their REStechnology profile into ICT supported systemsmanagement and related domains in public governance,law and the humanities

• IMP PAN researchers have learned how ICT issues in energymanagement are approached at UT

• IMP PAN researchers have been introduced to social science aspectsthat should be considered together with development of technologysolutions

• Development of an ICT tool for a local energy system is one the maintasks in the new strategic project that will be coordinated by IMPPAN

1. Raising the research profile of IMP PAN within the country and abroad

• through staff exchanges and long-term collaborations, IMP-PAN’s scientists are exposed to new environments and levels of excellence, raising their research profiles and capacities

• participation in the summer schools, exchange visits - IMP PAN researchers had opportunity to get better/in depth knowledge in the field of smart energy systems and to have a clearer view of how is research conducted in well known scientific institutions

• new topics within the research of smart energy systems have been included at IMP PAN

• awareness raising of what a research institution needs to be in order to be an attractive partner for acknowledged scientific organisations, business entities and other stakeholders

• IMP PAN research team has captured the amount of ca. 1.362.380 EUR of competitivefunding in European and national projects related to the topic of SuPREME

3. A leap forward in terms of reputation, attractiveness and opening of newnetworks of IMP PAN as a result of the Twinning exercise

• IMP PAN research team has captured the amount of ca. 1.362.380 EUR of competitivefunding in European and national projects related to the topic of SuPREME

• one of them was submitted in frame of the Polish strategic R&D programme BIOSTRATEG; IMPPAN is the coordinator; the total budget for IMP PAN is ca. 2.260.000 EUR, including ca. 588.640EUR for research works on energy planning and management system in rural areas

• national funding for restructuring of IMP PAN in order to enhance its research performance in thefield of distributed energy systems planning, design and management; total budget ca. 589.640EUR (for enlargement of the research group, equipment)

• COSME programme – project facilitating collaboration among European clusters in the field ofrenewable energy; total budget for IMP PAN is ca. 54.000 EUR, IMP PAN participates in the projectas the leader of Baltic-Eco Energy Cluster

• INTERREG South Baltic Programme – project increasing innovativeness of blue and green tourismcompanies by integrating elements of circular economy; total budget for IMP PAN is ca. 130.100EUR

4. An improvement in terms of being able to attract more competitiveresearch funding (national/EU/international) by IMP PAN as a result of theTwinning exercise

• AAU, through PhD courses and summer school, have shared their knowledge and expertisein the energy systems analysis and simulation model EnergyPLAN regarding design,simulation and analysis of energy systems from a city scale perspective up to national andsupra-national energy systems, and in advanced electrical systems analysis and controlmethods. The supervisor from AAU participated in preparing of abstracts andpresentations for the 4DH conference. There has been also one joint abstract submittedfor RESRB conference

• UT has shared their knowledge in dedicated courses on ICT control and Smart Grids,transition management and legal issues, human technology systems, evaluation of energytechnologies and building collaboration in energy research. The supervisor from UTparticipated in preparing an abstract on the role of research institutes and user-centeredcooperation in renewable technologies for RESRB conference on

• eseia has contributed logistical infrastructure for knowledge transfer through connectingIMP PAN with RES stakeholders and research organisations through networking events,access to their membership base.
