SBE New Mission “Every public school student will graduate from high school, globally competitive for work and postsecondary education, and prepared for life in the 21st century.” (adopted in 2006)

These studies and dialogue were occurring in 2008, prior to the Race to the Top Grant.

• Underwriting the state’s Career & College: Ready, Set, Go! initiative

• Guides our work to meet the challenges from the 2008 Framework for Change to create schools that educators and students need today to meet our mission

Mission

Our Goal:NC public schools will produce globally competitive students.

The Purpose of Standards:To define and communicate the knowledge and skills a student must master to be globally competitive.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and NC Essential Standards(ES) are for all subject areas – including Guidance Curriculum

Based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy

Aligned with ASCA National Standards for Students (National Model)

NC K-12 Guidance Essential Standards: What are they?

• “Must Have" goals of the guidance curriculum

• Skills, understandings and learning experiences students master at each developmental level progressing to the next level

• Focused on higher-order knowledge and skills all students should master - Assurance that every student learns essential content and skills for the 21st Century

• Assessed in the classroom via formative, benchmark/interim, and summative assessments to inform of student learning and teaching practices.

NC K-12 Guidance Essential Standards Included: Administrators, school counselors, university educators,

& ASCA representative

• Desired a student-centered approach – What do we want students to master from these standards in order to be career and college ready?

• Stated that standards needed to be clear and relevant

• Suggested connections to the ASCA (American Association of School Counselors) model through the ASCA National Standards for Students
