DIMENSIONS 2011June 1 - July 23, 2012Main Salon, Chapel Gallery

Dimensions 2011 present 33 works of which one third are from emerging Saskatchewan artists. Works of art for the Dimensions 2011 exhibition were selected by Paul Lapointe of Batoche, SK and Jane Kenyon of Vancouver, BC. It was their responsibility to review 156 craft objects and present for tour the best Saskatchewan has to offer. Lapointe is a master

artisan who has worked in wood, printmaking, and mixed media. Kenyon is a textile artist who grew up in Saskatoon where she studied and practiced medicine.

Mary Romanuck

Continued from cover. Waterworks, the title of this year’s exhibition of fibre and textile artwork created by members of the Fibre Art Network (FAN), brings great ambiance to the Chapel Gallery. Through these artist’s eyes the subject is surveyed and transformed into two and three-dimensional tactile forms of varying sizes and styles. The proximity of the Chapel Gallery to the North Saskatchewan River and the stunning view of the river valley from its patio make it the perfect venue for this work, which was created specifically with this space in mind.

FAN is a cooperative of self-defined artists based in western Canada, committed to promoting quilting and fibre arts and each other. Members are from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon and Northwest Territories. They stay connected through annual retreats, monthly newsletters, a website (www.fibreartnetwork.com), and group exhibitions. FAN membership includes emerging fibre artists, teachers, authors, judges and award winning quilt artists. Many have shown their work nationally and internationally and some have won both national and international recognition for their work. The cooperative engenders fellowship of like-minded friends and celebrates differences as well as common interests. Curated by Holly Hildebrand and Kathy Dill from works by the Western Canada Group.

ENTANGLED: Twyla ExnerJuly 1 - 26, 2012Window Salon, Chapel Gallery

Twyla Exner is interested in the relationships between cultural and natural production, consumption and waste, high and low technology, and biological and mechanical growth. Exner’s sculptures and drawings employ the notion of recreating the natural with the technological. Using wires, cords, and electrical connectors, she imitates plant

pods, root systems and human physiological forms, reproducing hybrids of technology and nature that appear to be growing, evolving, reforming, overtaking and/or devouring electronic infrastructures and architectural spaces.

NOHKUM - GRANDMOTHERMay 1, 2012 - October 12, 2012Allen Sapp Gallery

The Allen Sapp Gallery currently has on exhibition the best of Allen Sapp’s paintings on the subject of his grandmother. These paintings help to explain the traditional role of First Nations Women in Cree culture. Nohkum - Grandmother features a full-size tipi, archival video footage, artifacts, traditional medicines, living plants, and of course, Allen Sapp’s paintings.

The exhibition reveals the relationship and impact Allen’s Grandmother, Maggie Soonias, had on him as an individual and an artist. This profound relationship is the foundation of the tremendous respect Allen has for women as exemplified in his paintings.

“My Nohkum has been a favorite subject for many paintings. She was a tall lady, with a strong voice, but very gentle nature. I can still see her as if she were beside me now when I am painting” – Allen Sapp, ‘I Heard the Drums’

Traditional First Nation’s worldview teaches that women are the care givers, providers, healers and nurturers. They are the bearer’s of life and as such should be given the utmost respect.

The Allen Sapp Gallery would like to thank the following people for sharing their knowledge and expertise with this exhibition: Daphie Pooyak, Valerie Tootoosis-Bull, Paul Chekosis, Wayne Chekosis and Ross Paskemin.

Bertha works in stained glass, mosaic and jewelery. Since her retirement from teaching she has had the opportunity, interest and drive to move from patterns to her own one-of-a-kind contemporary designs. Working spontaneously with paper and cutouts, artists will construct collage designs that are not only artworks in their own right, but jumping-off points for further explorations. Paper collage will be translated into fabric collage using simple techniques that anyone can learn, as we touch on constructive sewing, embellish stitching, and quilting the layers by hand. Allen Sapp Gallery Healing Garden So much has happened in the Healing Garden since the beginning of Spring. If you haven’t been to the garden, come and check it out! From 5 - 7pm every Wednesday all summer long you’ll find Kjelti working away in the garden so stop in for tea, check out how the plants are growing, and lend a helping hand. The Healing Garden would not have been possible without the dedication, time and hardwork of all the volunteers who have made this possible, thank you! On June 2nd, 30 helpers came-out for a big day of prep. and planting. Through the gallery’s programming over 150 students have come to help plant seedlings and learn about permaculture. A Willow Weaving Workshop was hosted in the pouring rain to create a decorative entrance to the garden. Another tipi, generously donated by Lakeland Library, has been raised and the prayer flags are flying again. An interpretive sign explaining the vision for the garden is posted in the garden for visitors.

Recently, the Allen Sapp Gallery Healing Garden was presented with a Recognition Award from the Regional Centre of Excellence on Education for Sustainable Development where innovative initiatives from all over Saskatchewan gain recognition for their contribution to a sustainable future for our province. Read more at www.saskrce.ca The Healing Garden is made possible with the generous support of our sponsors. The Walmart Evergreen Fund, SaskEnergy, TD Friends of the Environment Fund, and the City of North Battleford.
