MEMBER NEWS GRAND FALLS SOPRANO D’ARCY BLUN-STON WINS 2018/19 UBC SCHOOL OF MUSIC CONCERTO COMPETITION Open to all music students, the UBC School of Music Concerto Competition is an opportunity for young musicians to earn a coveted spot as a solo performer with the UBC Symphony Or-chestra. expressive abilities as musicians. There were many entries in the competition and the per-formance level was extremely high, as always. Originally from Grand Falls, New Brunswick, D’Arcy was a member of the New Brunswick Youth Choir from 2011 to 2017, performed as soprano soloist at Choral Fest in 2016 and has many other soloist, choral and academic ac-complishments to her credit. ELINOR JANE (LYNN) DUNCAN As remembered by conductor friend, Spencer Belyea: Lynn (as we called her) grew up in several On-tario communities with her United Church min-ister father and family. After marriage she moved to NB and, in the 1980s, sang contralto with me in the Canada Games and Tattoo 200 Choirs, as well as the Saint John Choral Soci-ety.  Michael Molloy involved Lynn in another community choir called Cantus and she sang with me again when that choir combined with my chamber choir, Camerata in the late 90s to form the Saint John Chorale. I also enjoyed having Lynn in the Symphony New Brunswick Chorus.   She was my volunteer administrative assistant for the Canada Games Choir’s 10th anniversary in 1995, for Festival By the Sea. Lynn was active on the NBCF’s Choral Fest committees when in Saint John, and was recognized for her suc-

cessful silent auctions at those events. She also filled a vacancy on the NBCF Board when Di-rector Allan Bustin passed away. Lynn became a close family friend, and loving Godmother to our daughter. We stayed close over the years, and Lynn confided that she wanted to leave some funds to the NBCF.  We agreed that many choral conductors lacked specific training in that pursuit. There-fore she kindly left money, in her will, for up to two bursaries yearly for NB conductors, to fur-ther professional development. Lynn thought this gift would enhance New Brunswick’s choral communities. Details of Elinor Jane (Lynn) Duncan’s bequest are pending. The NBCF is honoured to be en-trusted with this legacy that will benefit New Brunswick choral conductors long into the fu-ture.

DACAPO CHAMBER CHOIR 2019 NEW-WORKS CHORAL COMPOSITION COMPETI-TION Entry deadline: Monday, March 18, 2019 The purpose of the NewWorks competition is to foster new and engaging choral works by Canadian composers.  We are continually look-ing for new pieces to perform which will chal-lenge us and our audiences — both musically and emotionally.  This November, we released our newest CD - 9 of 10 tracks on this record-ing come out of this NewWorks competition! In its programming and performance, DaCapo aims to contribute to the work of building em-pathy, of fostering understanding, and of strengthening bonds between the entitled and the impoverished, focusing particularly on the refugee road in its present programming. With this in mind, for this year’s NewWorks competi-tion, we are asking for compositions that are related in some way to the theme of renewal: of hope, courage, and new purpose.  The winning entry of the 2019 competition will receive a $1,500 cash award plus travel ex-penses to Kitchener to attend the premiere of his/her composition by the DaCapo Chamber Choir, under director Leonard Enns, in the choir’s 2017/2018 season.  We are also inviting young composers (aged 25 and younger) to
