Color Hybrid – Power plant configuration
Main engines: Father/Son 2x6L / 2x8L: 3,600 kW/ 4,800 kW
Main generators: 2 x 4,450 kW
PTI/PTO: 2 x 2,700 kW
Battery package: 2 x 2,350 kWh
In addition (Not shown):
A heat reservoir (utilizing
heeling tanks) storing
5MWh (ΔT = 15C)
of waste heat from
combustion engines for
use for heating while
sailing on batteries,
during port calls and
night stop.
Vessel can utilize 4
sources of energy;
• Diesel (MGO)
• Shore Power
• Batteries
• Heat Reservoir
Electric heater if heat
reservoir is empty
4 x Exhaust water heaters for heat reservoir
Color Hybrid – Main CharacteristicsFlag & Regulations;

Color Hybrid – Operational modes
• A number of main operational modes are developed:
– Harbour mode with battery charging in Sandefjord
– Maneuver mode on battery in Sandefjord
– Slow speed mode on battery in Sandefjord fjord.
– Several transit modes (pending speed requirement etc)
– Slow speed mode DE/DM in Strømstad
– Maneuver mode in Strømstad
– Harbour mode in Strømstad
>
Color Hybrid – Battery package
• Appx 20% of the energy consumption done with green electric power, (CO2 neutral)
• Shore power in Strømstad will increase above number
• 12knots for up to 60 minutes incl hotel load of 750 kW per roundtrip/charging.
• Capacity 4,700 kWh of batteries
• Output voltage 700 – 1000V DC
• Weight of total battery package is abt 65 tones
>
Color Hybrid – Environmental benefits
• The environmental and other benefits with use of batteries are quitesignificant:
– Transfer energy consumption from ‘dirty’ to ‘clean’ energy, reduce fossile fuelconsumption
– Emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx and particles are reduced
– By use of batteries for peakshaving, diesel engines can operate at optimal load
– Use of batteries as ‘spinning’ reserve (e.g. no need to start another D/E during maneuver or slowspeed in narrow waters)
– Eliminate or significantly reduce emissions in sensitive areas
– Batteries can be loaded immediately when connected and have extremely gooddynamic response to load variations
>
Color Hybrid – Battery usage for peak shaving
Peak shaving
“Peak shaving”
(and “Spinning
reserve”)
conditions give
better
operational
conditions for
diesel engines.
Added bonus
with battery
hybrid
systems.
The availability of local a high-capacity electric power grid for boost charging (6,5 MW) at a
daytime turnaround in Sandefjord and the vessel’s operation plan (2 returns trips per day and
an overnight stay in Sandefjord).
