warm welcome to the Christmas 2012edition of The Nazareth Trust

Newsletter.

As we approach the end of 2012 and I takesome time to reflect upon this, our 150thanniversary year, I do so with a sense ofwonder of all the Lord has accomplishedthrough our work in Nazareth, through ourfriends and through all those whocontribute to this remarkable ministry.

In a year of enjoyment and excitement, of renewing oldacquaintances and of making new friendships, in a year oflooking back and of looking forward, I am reminded of that mostbeautiful of Psalms - Psalm 100 - and, in particular, of the finalverse, which reads in the New International Version:

"For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; hisfaithfulness continues through all generations."

I have not seen those precious words better fulfilled than in ourown Hospital in Nazareth.

In this edition of the newsletter you will be able to read all aboutthe various reunion and celebratory events that have taken placeacross the entire world (quite literally); including Scotland,Jersey, Australia and, of course, the main event in Nazareth itself. There are photographs and reports galore to enjoy - even if youwere not able to join us - all starting from page 19.

With all the news contained herein, I can't possibly give morethan a flavour of all we have to share with you in this edition, buthere are some pointers of new and exciting developments thatare occuring now and which we hope will be further progressedin 2013.

On page 4, you will find news on our Heart to Heart campaignto support the development and opening of our brand newcatheterisation unit for the city of Nazareth. On page 5, news ofa newly published (and quite stunning) book about our founder,Dr. PK Vartan - and on page 7 our hopes for a new recipe bookbased upon the Mennonite classic Extending the Table. Iencourage all our readers and friends to contact LevetteCallander with your ideas!

Our School of Nursing continues to grow and is now at fullcapacity in terms of student numbers. We are therefore lookingto extend our facilities to build a simulation unit to support thegrowing student body - read more from page 8. SERVE Nazarethand our Hospital Chaplaincy Service continue to be extremelyactive in the Christian life of the Hospital and community - allthe current news can be found from page 10.

And, of course, there are a number of ways in which you can getinvolved and help the ministry. Throughout the Newsletter youwill find many opportunities to get involved and to give yoursupport. Please, stand with us as we continue to work - in thename of Jesus - to serve all those who may need us.

I would like to give my very special thanks to Dawn Eggenberger, the artist who generously gave permission to use her arrestinglybeautiful painting of Mary and Jesus on our front cover.

A precious and blessed Christmas Season to you and your lovedones.

new book on the history of the Nazareth Hospital has beenpublished, written by broadcaster and writer, Malcolm

Billings.

'Vartan of Nazareth: Missionary andMedical Pioneer in the nineteenthcentury Middle East' was published inSeptember and tracks the 150 yearhistory of the Hospital focusing on itsfounder Dr P K Vartan and uncoveringlots of interesting tales and little knownfacts along the way.

The book has taken a over a year to research and write, and wasfirst unveiled at the Nazareth Reunion attended by MalcolmBillings and John Vartan, great-grandson of the Hospital's founder, who also helped with the research and publication of the book.

A presenter with the BBC, Malcolm has made programmes inAsia, Africa, Australia, the Americasand Europe and contributes to theRadio 4 programme, 'From Our OwnCorrespondent’. He has written anumber of historical books including'The History of the English' and 'TheArchaeology and History of London'.

The book, which is packed withphotographs and illustrations, tracesthe fascinating life of PacradooniKaloost Vartan.

At its officiallaunch in London,author MalcolmBillings highlightedVartan's schoolingin Constantinoplein the 1840s, andsaid, "The key tou n d e r s t a n d i n gVartan's characterw a s i n t h ed i s c o v e r y o fd o c u m e n t s i n

Edinburgh that confirmed where Vartan went to school.

The Bebek Seminary was the first Protestant school to open inConstantinople in the early 1840s,and its headmaster, CyrusHamlin, was a brilliant teacher whose influence on the youngVartan is clearly seen throughout the Edinburgh medicalmissionary's life. Hamlin believed in a rounded education thatincluded technical subjects such as metal and woodwork. Later,in Palestine Vartan sometimes had to make his own surgicalinstruments! Science was also in the curriculum and hewatched his teacher treat the ailments of local people in thevillage. Unlike other schools at the time, Bebek was specificallyfor the boys of poor Armenian families and lessons were inEnglish. At the beginning of the Crimean War the young Vartanwas recruited by the British as an interpreter and his observationof battlefield medicine inspired him to train as a physician andsurgeon in Edinburgh."

The book, which is priced at £25.00, is available to purchasefrom www.amazon.com and copies are also available fromHead Office.

ongratulations and many, many thanks to Ann-Marie Colemanand her fellow cyclists who took part in the Bennachie Bike

Ride in support of The Nazareth Trust.

A keen cyclist, this is the fifth year that Ann-Marie has organised the25 mile cycle which took place earlier in the summer inAberdeenshire, Scotland.

A number of enthusiasticcyclists took part in theevent, raising £200 for theNazareth Trust, as well as anumber of other charities.Starting at the Chapel inGarioch, near Inverurie, thescenic route was set in thebackdrop of Bennachie Hill, following forest tracks muchof the way.

Ann-Marie, said, "Thankfully, we were lucky with the weatherwhich always makes a difference. "

However, Ann-Marie is no stranger to bike rides for she's also takenpart in Cycle The Galilee a staggering nine times.

She first became involved in 1997 as she explains, "I answered anad in my church magazine calling for cyclists to take part in CycleThe Gailiee. That title caught my attention and thankfully it startedan amazing journey for me that has brought me to Galilee, Israeland the West Bank, opening my eyes and heart to people andsituations that had, up to that point, been out with my experience.

"I have taken part in the bike ride for Nazareth Hospital nine timesnow, the most recent being last November when we wereprivileged to ride into the hospital grounds to begin the year ofcelebration for the 150th anniversary - a very special occasion.Another milestone for me was the opening of the new operatingsuite. I had been volunteering with the Al-Shurooq School forblind children and was therefore able to attend the openingcelebrations. That was a real privilege and one that I will treasure.

"Even though these events were special, nothing will comparewith my first bike ride when we cycled to the hospital grounds atthe end of the '97 bike ride to be greeted by hospital staff -medical director, midwives, maintenance workers, everyone whocould be spared….and the pipe band! There were hugs andtears and memories, connections and friends made that havestood the test of time"

SERVE Nazareth

his summer has been a busy, but productive season at SERVE.We had nine people serving with us this summer including our

very first campus couple. If there was a theme for this summer itwas “spiritual growth”. Many of our interns came to Nazarethdesperate to hear from the Lord and unsure about what theirfutures held. One by one, each intern heard from the Lord! Oneintern left Nazareth with a new career trajectory; another feltcompelled to surrender her life to full time ministry. So needless tosay, the Lord is doing a good thing in Nazareth.

This month we welcomed three new Associates to our campus.Between the three, we have three different continents represented. Also we are excited to be hosting two groups this autumn throughour Group SERVE programme. The Group SERVE programme hasgrown much more this year than we expected. At years end, wewill have had 10 groups come and serve in Nazareth and hadapproximately 100 people serving the Kingdom of God inNazareth.

The SERVE staff celebrated a new addition in August. SERVEadministrators Jillian and Matthew Altman gave birth to their firstchild, Tristyn Eliza.

Kingdom of God in Nazareth through your service and oursecond focus is to grow the Kingdom of God within you.Our hope is that interns leave Nazareth not only having

made a difference in the community, but also impassionedto serve the Lord with all that they have.

SERVE Nazareth Associate ProgrammeAssociate Programme The Associate programme is a flexible1 - 6 month programme designed to fit into any schedule.

Associates are similar to interns with the exception that theywill be primarily self guided. This programme is ideal for

retirees or married couples.

Page 11: Nazareth Trust News: Christmas 2012

or me, SERVE Nazareth has been all about the mountains. We quite literally spent a lot of time on mountains, including

Mt. Precipice, Mt. Tabor, Mt. Arbel, and the Mount of Beatitudes;even Nazareth itself is built into the hills. However, SERVE hasbeen somewhat of a spiritual mountaintop experience as well. The song “Mountain” by Steven Curtis Chapman became mySERVE theme song. If you’ve never heard it, some of the lyricsare:

My faith is strengthened by all that I seeYou make it easy for me to believe up on the mountainYou bring me up here on this mountainFor me to rest and learn and growI see the truth up on the mountain

And I carry it to the world far belowSo as I go down to the valleyKnowing that You will go with meThis is my prayer, LordHelp me to remember what You've shown meUp on the mountain

I cherish these times up on the mountainBut I can leave this place because I knowSomeday You'll take me home to live foreverUp on the mountain

I came to SERVE Nazareth looking for a spiritually-profitable“grand adventure”, among other reasons. With my universitystudies finally behind me, I wanted to be refreshed and re-focussed on God before jumping into the working world. SERVEwas not only all that I could have asked for, but more than I knewto ask for. In leaving behind the familiar to fly into the unknownhalfway around the world, one learns dependence on God in awhole new way. Though we all came from different places andare likely headed in different directions, for three months, Godbrought together a very diverse group of people to sharpen oneanother “as iron sharpens iron” (Prov. 27:17).

Time and again, God provided exactly what I needed at exactlythe right time. When I was missing my family back in Canada,God gave me a big, boisterous adoptive family in Israel. Servingthe body of Christ in Nazareth Village was a privilege and apleasure. The Bible came alive before my eyes; “I am the GoodShepherd” and “I am the vine” have a whole new meaning forme. Along the way, I laughed a lot, learned a lot, and loved a lot.Though I have left a little piece of my heart in Nazareth, I havecome home richer for the experience, with new confidence inmyself, and more importantly, confidence in my God. While Istill don’t know what the future holds for me, I come down fromthe SERVE mountain with the unshakeable certainty that the Onethat made me knows my future, and that is all that matters.

Group SERVE Update

roup SERVE has been a new addition to the SERVE Nazarethprogramme this year and we have been delighted with how

God has developed and blessed people through it.

Each group has a placement (or more, depending on size andduration of the group!) where they serve and build relationshipswith local people. The placements can vary from helping paint ahouse used for a retreat ministry, to working with staff at theNazareth Village, to helping with Occupational Therapy in ourhospital or with Kids’ camps. It really is as varied as the uniqueand wonderful people who come here!

At the end of each group’s time here, we hold an event (often abarbeque) for the group to invite their new friends andcolleagues to share in. It is a great end to their time here and achance for us to connect and spend time with new people, whilecelebrating the group’s experiences here.

This year was the first year we had a group from Trinity WesternUniversity, led by Chelsea Ayers and Emily Gemmell. Their groupof six had the gift of connecting with people, and here’s whatthey said about their time here:

Dan“All of my expectations and goals were realized above andbeyond what I had expected. Each day God brought new lessonsand opportunities for me to learn about a people and culture thatis not like my own. My eyes were opened to a new reality in theBible.”

Lindsay“I learned that God is the God of this city, no matter how few ormany Christians, no matter what political ties or divides. I havelearned that as awful as persecution and being a minority is, itmakes these people’s faith so beautiful and admirable. It gaveme courage and hope. I also have learned I love Arab culture, language, people and baklava.”

Emily“My greatest expectations could not have encompassed what anamazing experience this has been. We gained a lot of respect forArab culture. It has been a huge blessing to get to know thepeople in this city. I’ve also learned about the need for unityamong Christians of all denominations. I have learned a lot aboutcommunity from these people, as well as their genuinefriendliness.”

he Lord has blessed us richly in the ministry of the Hospital. He is doing a great work between us as a Chaplaincy Team.

All our staff and volunteers work to look after the patients andencourage them, with ministry, prayer and different activities. We also do the same with the medical teams, to spread God’sword and the good news in the Hospital.

We now have 12 volunteers in the Chaplaincy Team, fromdifferent places in the Galilee, full of love for the Lord and forothers. One of them serves with us full time. We have a newministry in the Nursing School which began this year, with over200 students of different religions. The Chaplaincy Team visit andtalk with them about the Lord. Of course this brings differentreactions but this is an important ministry which can have adramatic, positive effect in the young people and their futureroles in society.

ThanksgivingLuke 17:11-19

“Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are theother nine?”

Often we find it hard to express our thanksgiving because wehave a sinful nature, as Paul says in Romans 1:21.

In “Day by Day” by William MacDonald, he writes aboutthankfulness. One missionary to Brazil said : "There are twotribes that don't use the word thank you when a favour is donefor them. They reply, "That is exactly what I wanted" or, "This isuseful to me".

To deny goodness is a common thing in all cultures. A radioprogramme helped to find jobs for the unemployed andsucceeded in finding work for 2500 people. However, the hostof the programme said that only 10 of the 2500 took the time tothank them.

Sometimes God allows us to experience denial of our goodworks, in order to feel the same way He felt all the time duringhis life on earth. This makes us appreciate the importance ofgiving thanks.

Sometimes we fail to give thanks for the many merciful worksdone for us such as: counselling and guidance, hospitality andtravel. And from this passage about the ten lepers, we arereminded that there are many things to give thanks for, but thethankful hearts are few.

A project close to Robertand Nancy's hearts, this is central to the holistic healing missionof The Nazareth Project.

The Martins first arrived in Nazareth in the 1960s for a two-yearterm. Two years turned to three, and over a period of thirty years, they would work in Nazareth for a total of eighteen. Robertserved as Nazareth Hospital's general director from 1988-1995,and helped form the vision for our US partnering organisation.

Nancy Martin, Ed. D. directed the School of Nursing, leading itfrom LPN training to an RN diploma programme. More recently,as a member of The Nazareth Trust Board, Nancy has workedwith the school in the development of its four-year baccalaureatedegree programme.

Noting the prominent role of war during the Hospital's centuryand a half, Dr. Nancy Martin remarked, "At times when thingsare difficult and we don't see our way ahead we take the nextstep in faith, and discover His plan in it."

It was a privilege to gather to worship with people who had goneto Nazareth to teach, swing hammers, wash hospital linens, sew, play with children, perform surgeries, consult, or pedal bicyclesto raise funds - all of it, ultimately, a way to love Jesus by lovingand serving people in His Name.

arlier in the year Johaina Talhami and Shauk Atamlehtravelled to Harrisonburg, Virginia for a course in

peacebuilding. They were chosen for their roles as leaders, aswell as their existing foundations for conflict resolution.

Johaina has served as Charge Maternity Nurse since 1999,supervising 30 members of staff. A midwife, she is dedicated toher profession and to the Hospital, and is a member of the ChildSafety and Non-Violence Committees.

She said, "I took the course for my work. At least that's what Ithought in the beginning. But I realised that it won't just help mefacing the conflicts in my job. It will also help me in my home, neighbourhood, and hopefully, my country."

Shauk has served as instructor for maternity nursing at theNazareth School of Nursing since 1998. Shauk found the courserelevant to her work at the nursing school, where the culturaldifferences can present challenges.

She added, "It was nice to meet people from all around theworld and to hear their stories and to learn from them."

This is the fourth year that The Nazareth Project has sponsoredstaff from Nazareth to attend the Centre's Summer PeacebuildingInstitute at Eastern Mennonite University. This is a reflection oftheir commitment to the difficult work of reconciliation.

ecently we received a wonderful letter from a visitor.

"I am telling everyone I know about Nazareth Village. This wasmy favorite place we went to, of all 50 sites in two weeks! Youmade life in Jesus' day REAL. When we saw the 400-year-oldolive tree, our guide explained that the name Nazareth comesfrom the word NETZER, which means TENDER SHOOT.

When he said that, a question I had asked the Lord a good 25 +years ago came to mind and that was -- what did Isaiah meanwhen he said in chapter 53, "He grew up before him like aTENDER SHOOT and like a root out of dry ground." Like aNETZER from NETZERETH! Isn't it fantastic how God ties all thedetails together!

THANK YOU so much for your humility and faithful re-creationof the ancient village of Nazareth."

We hear sentiments like this from many of our visitors. However, despite growing numbers of tourists all spring, as we went intoAutumn we faced a great challenge. The news about the angeragainst Westerners in Muslim areas because of the anti-Islamfilm, and with rumours of war concerning Islam tourists hadbeen either cancelling their trips altoghther or had been reluctantto come to an Arab town. So our numbers were dwindling andin September we began to face financial difficulties.

In the midst of thesechallenges, we decidedto sit together and pray.Management, staff andvolunteers took thetime to be with eachother and with theLord, prayingspecifically for thisministry - that Hewould sustain and keepit.

And His answer?

Well, in October and November, we welcomed more visitors permonth than we had ever experienced in our entire history!

But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow toanger, abounding in love and faithfulness.Psalm 86:15 (NIV)

Nazareth Reunion

riends and supporters from across the world gathered inNazareth in September to take part in a week of activities in

celebration of the Hospital's 150th anniversary.

It was a time for remembrance and celebration but most of all atime for many friends and colleagues to come together andreunite for such a special occasion.

On the opening day John Vartan, great grandson of founder P KVartan, hosted a reception in the Chapel Garden at the Hospitalprior to a special prayer service. His grandson Dominic, plantedan Iris Vartanii flower as a symbol of the anniversary. This lovelylight blue flower with its striking yellow stripe was firstdiscovered by the Hospital's founder Dr P K Vartan.

Remembering Day, one of the key days of the week, took part inthe Hospital with welcoming speeches by Joseph Main, CEO, DrBishara Bisharat, Head of the Hospital.

Long time friends of the Hospital, Dr Fred Holmes and Dr RunaMackay, both provided fascinating and thoroughly enjoyablepresentations on their many years spent at the hospital.

Dr Nakhle Bishara provided a remarkable historical insight intothe Hospital before presentations by Anne King Lewis, MerrilKitchen, and Shelagh Wynne.

During the day the former Heads of the Hospital who havepassed away, Dr Scrimgeour, Dr Bathgate, Dr Tester and DrBernath were remembered in special ceremonies including theofficial opening of a public roundabout dedicated to Dr HansBernath. Dedications of this kind rarely occur in Nazareth.

Throughout the week there were arranged tours and visits to theSchool of Nursing, various Hospital departments and NazarethVillage, as well as formal dinners and social events such asbarbeques.

A specially arranged conference on 'The Health of the ArabPopulation' was attended by both local and international healthprofessionals. A picnic by the Sea of Galilee rounded off a very, very special week leaving all those who attended with gratefulmemories.

There now follows a selection of photographs from the NazarethReunion.

Nazareth Reunion

t has been more than 35 years now since I started observing theNazareth Hospital as an outsider. I observed and met local and

international hospital staff as a patient and as a friend.

I still remember the scene in the children's ward and the little girl Isaw who got burnt by hot water! I can't forget that scene and seeingthe gentle hands that took care of her. I was 6 years old and I wassick myself, staying in the ward suffering from severe dehydration, and here I am after 35 years…

I still remember the scene in the ER when I arrived there in August1986 covered in blood, after I fell down and couldn't move myfingers. I had cut a tendon but in few minutes I was in the operatingtheatre and with great professionalism, they operated on my hand.Today my hand works better than expected, according to myspecialist.

I still remember the scene whenever I had the chance to take mymother to have her kidney dialysis. I was touched by the love, compassion, and the welcome the staff gave to their patient forseven years, three times a week. She loved them until the last minuteof her life in December 2010!

Now I am an insider, a hospital staff member, and what a privilegeto be assigned to serve all of those who came to visit their secondhome and who served us in the past… served my people…. !

After the invitations were sent out to those who served in theNazareth Hospital and their families the correspondence started, and I was really looking forward to meeting them all in person….And the date arrived..

Many of the Reunion participants were people I knew or heardabout as a Nazarene, but one common thing that I knew about allof them, is that they left their comfort zone, their homes, topractically help improve the health of the people in the Galilee..because they were called to do so.

Lots of people, lots of emotions, lots of wonderful memories, andlots of heart to heart talk.. Scenes that I will never forget..Here, Dr. Marc Bernath expresses how he shared his father, Dr. HansBernath, with everyone, never knew when his father would returnhome… There, Mrs. Odette Tester, 93 yrs, full of energy andbrightness shared her story.. Also, Dr. Runa Mackay is still sharp andwith soft loving spirit, the same person who saved my life when Iwas a child.

Highlights of an emotional meeting on stage after 16 years, includeShelagh Wynne, a former Director of Nursing, meeting and huggingher previous Deputy, the current Director of Nursing, Randa Elias,- everybody was emotionally touched. Also Dr. Fred Holmes, withhis great sense of humor, and great memories. He made everybodylaugh and also place a smile in their hearts...

I will never forget the scene of the shop owner's face, when herecognized Dr. Bob Martin in the old Market in Nazareth and alsoknew who Bushra and Dorrete Bernath were.

I will never forget the scene, when the great grandsons of Dr.Kaloost Vartan and Salim Abboud met.

And more and more scenes that can never be forgotten... How can I forget these scenes..?

It was a memorable experience that I will never forget. I will alwaysremember these scenes, the old and the new ones, and I know thatwhat was started 150 years ago, continues with the currentgeneration with the same values of compassion and love, humandignity, excellence and professionalism and outstanding service….

nniversary celebrations also extended to the beautiful island ofJersey but this time the occasion was the 40th anniversary of a

work group who volunteered to help in Nazareth Hospital.

Organised by the Christian relief charity, Tearfund, two volunteergroups, one of which was led by Jean Le Maistre MBE, made up of11 people from Jersey and 10 from the UK, left for Nazareth in thesummer of 1972.

Since then over 100 work groups have travelled from Jersey acrossthe globe to deserving organisations. In celebration of theNazareth Trip Jean organised a dinner to celebrate the 40thanniversary of the project which was attended by six members ofthe original group from Jersey.

Reflecting on the trip to Nazareth Jean said, "It really opened myeyes to what was a fantastic opportunity to help. The Hospital wasthe only one in the region that was open 24 hours a day and it wasserving a population of 400,000. We came away convinced thatthere were huge opportunities to explore because at the timeoverseas aid was not really being done by anyone else."

As a result of the trip to Nazareth, Jean was invited to join and helpestablish the Jersey Overseas Aid Committee. He followed a careerin politics and continued to be involved with Christian missionariesworking in developing countries, as well as prolifically involved inmany other charitable and local organisations.

Earlier this year Jean received an MBE in the Queen's BirthdayHonours List - an award most richly deserved.

Reunions

Joining the Edinburgh celebrations on the same day but 10,502miles away across the globe, more than 100 volunteers gathered inAustralia on 6 October to take part in a reunion dinner.

Organised by Merrill Kitchen, a former doctor, the event was heldin a church in Melbourne. One guest, Tish Bevan, travelled astaggering 3,000km from Perth in Western Australia just to attend!

Over 240 Australians have worked or volunteered at the Hospitalover the past 35 years as part of nine work parties, although therewere also volunteer doctors and nurses.

Tim Kitchen began the evening by reading a letter of support fromThe Nazareth Trust, followed by a film presentation compiled bySamar Samawi. Lisa Kitchen, who was born in Nazareth, spokeabout her trip to the Nazareth Reunion.

Merrill was fortunate to attend the reunion in Nazareth along withLisa Kitchen and fellow Australian, Daniel Vuong. Merrill said,"Lisa, who was born in Nazareth, is a high school teacher and wasable to explore ways in which an active connection could beginbetween her rural Australian school and St Joseph's School inNazareth. Hopefully, this will lead to ongoing student contactbetween the two schools and possibly a student exchangeprogramme in the future."

Following dinner Merrill also gave a presentation on the MortuaryAppeal and an amazing $19,000 has been raised to date byAustralian friends and supporters which is a terrific achievement.

The evening was closed by Tim Costello, Merrill's brother-in-law,who is the CEO of World Vision Australia, with a prayer for theongoing ministry of the Nazareth Hospital and The Nazareth Trust.

My Storyby Dr Fred Holmes

mbarking on a spiritual journey to Nazareth often results inmany twists and turns on the way but it took on a completely

new meaning for Dr Fred Holmes when heset off from London to Nazareth on the backof a Lambretta motor scooter!

In 1961, at a time when few people travelledthe globe, Fred, a medical student at theLondon Hospital in Whitechapel, and afellow student, David Barnardo, the great, great nephew of Thomas John Barnardo, founder of the UK charity, decided to follow in the footsteps ofother medics working abroad. Having written to Dr John Tester, who was the Medical Director in Nazareth, the two enthusiasticstudents were invited to visit Nazareth, as part of a studentelective which had just been introduced to the medicalcurriculum.

So determined were Fred and David to embark on thisadventure, that the two gave up lunch for a year to pay for thetrip!

It took the duo over five weeks to travel to Nazareth where theyremained for a month, returning to London, saddle sore butenriched by their experiences.

In 1964, Fred was invited back to take up the role of a juniordoctor to assist the experienced doctors already based there.

Fred remained at the Hospital for over a year but was keen toundergo specialist training and so returned to the UK to furtherhis studies.

However, the pull of Nazareth continued and in 1969 Fredreturned to Nazareth as a General Surgeon and Gynaecologist, where he worked for ten years before returning to the UK tosettle in Newcastle.

Commenting on the difference the Hospital has made to thecommunity, Fred said, "The Hospital made a big impact on localhealthcare, and continues to do so for many reasons. It was theonly Hospital providing an emergency service in the area andthis was recognised by the Israeli Government. Also, it is thesecond biggest employer in Nazareth, after the Municipality, which is very important to the area. It runs an excellent nursingtraining course with 100 nurses enrolled over the three yearcourse. And lastly, the Christian community continues to facemany challenges in the Middle East and to be able to continue toprovide an active Christian faith based service is important to thewider Christian community."

He added"When we were working at the Hospital we felt thatafter we left it would become a secular Hospital. However, theremaining local staff recognised their responsibility to continuethe Christian witness which I think is a thrilling achievement, andit continues to this day.”

And as for the Lambretta, Fred assures us that following the4,404 mile round trip he was quite glad to swap his enthusiasmfor two wheels for four wheeled vehicles!

eaving a legacy in your will can make a big impact onenabling the ministry and service of the Nazareth Trust to

continue in the future.

Donating a gift, no matter the size, can also provide tax benefitswhich might even reduce the tax payable on the estate by yourheirs. But legacy giving brings immeasurable benefits as youknow your generosity will lend tremendous support to thecontinued healthcare and education of benefactors who don'thave the luxury of choice.

The Nazareth Trust has many on going appeals for support - fromthe creation of a new mortuary to the training of doctors andnurses, and every penny will be spent on vital services.

Legacy giving is a simple process. A solicitor or bank canarrange to draft a legacy as part of your will. There are two typesof legacy available - a precuniary legacy is for a specific sum ofmoney and a residuary legacy is for a sum of money to be left tothe charity, the residue, after all debts, tax and costs are paid.

Go Without for A Day And Make A DifferenceFollowing the example of Fred Holmes, who gave up lunch for ayear to fund his trip to Nazareth (see page 35), we can all helpthe work of The Nazareth Trust by giving up something small anddonating what we save.

Whilst not suggesting we all give up lunch for a year, there arethose smaller items that we could give up and hardly notice.

If 1,000 supporters, who have not yet given in 2012, gave up theequivalent of two coffees a week from a typical high street coffeechain at a cost of £2.25 for the season of Lent, that would raisean amazing £27,000!! If these same supporters were to make thiscommitment for a whole year the work in Nazareth wouldbenefit by £216,000 by the end of 2013.
