My Brothers: I’d  like  to  start  by  thanking  each  of  you  for  the  service  you have put in over the past year. Nawakwa is

working to earn the 2012 Journey to Excellence Gold Award and is striving forward to earn it again for 2013. Special thanks go to those who helped put on the Fall Fellowship, the Section 7A Conclave, and our remarkable service weekends. It goes without saying that without your efforts Nawakwa would

not be nearly as successful as we have been. In the near future, we have our annual service project at the Byrd Park Carillon on December 22 and 23. The project is an excellent opportunity to serve the local area and is a lot of fun too!

The 2013 Section 7A Conclave is coming up in the not so distant  future!  This  year’s  conclave will be held at Camp Lions at the Pipsico Scout Reservation, hosted by Blue Heron Lodge. The Section 7A Conclave is one of my favorite events each year and every Arrowman should have the opportunity to experience one. I look forward to seeing all of you there!

Again, thank you for the wonderful year, and I look forward to working with you to help Nawakwa continue as a strong example of service and dedication to the Order of the Arrow.

Yours in Brotherhood, Marc Reiner

Adviser’s Minute

Brethren,

Congratulations and thank you for an outstanding Nawakwa year. Your active participation helped build a legacy of cheerful community service by completing

our three year GW/Jeff National Forest trail-building project. This  year’s  annual  community  Christmas Pageant rehearsal is December 22, Saturday, 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. and the pageant is December 23, Sunday 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Note the change in time due to the weekend

schedule. The pageant is presented at the Carillon, Byrd Park, in Richmond. Our job is to hold and change the sets for each act of the pageant. This is done outside on the second floor of the Carillon in partial darkness so be sure to dress for the weather, bring a flashlight and gloves. Come, join your Brothers in cheerful service and receive the real Christmas spirit. SR 7 A Conclave is April 26-28 at Camp Lions, Pipsico Scout Reservation, Spring Grove, VA. It will be an outstanding event filled with good food, fellowship, and training that you will want to register to attend now. Registration, trading post preorders and payment is on line at http://conclave.sr7a.org . The preorder deadline is February 10. Register NOW, do not delay!

The first National Scout Jamboree held at The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve is July 15-24. It will be one of those lifetime mountain high experiences with many first time events. Do not miss this great adventure. On another note, please join me in welcoming Mic Mullins as our new Professional Staff Advisor and Michael Lynch as our new Assistant Advisor. May the Peace and Joy of this Christmas Season be yours today and throughout the New Year. In W.W.W. Mack Ruffin

At the Nawakwa Lodge Fall Service Weekend, Mack Ruffin announced two changes. Mic Mullins will be taking over the role of Lodge Staff Advisor from Phillip Mumford and Michael Lynch will be the new Associate Lodge Advisor. Phillip is leaving the ranks as a BSA professional to take on the new role as head of the Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Neck. James E. West Fellowship

The  nationally  recognized  Founder’s  Award was created and presented at NOAC in 1981 as a means to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to their lodge. The award is reserved for an Arrowman who demonstrates to fellow Arrowmen that he or she memorializes in his or her every-day life the spirit of achievement as de-scribed by founder E. Urner Goodmen and Carroll A. Edson.

Nawakwa  Lodge  awarded  the  Founder’s  Award  to  three  brothers: Pat Dillion (left), Allen Crump (center), and Michael Lynch (right)

Fall Fellowship Awards Founder’s Award

The West Fellowship award is given for gifts of one thousand dollars or more to the Heart of Virginia Coun-cil Endowment Fund. Nawakwa Lodge annually do-nates one thousand dollars in honor of the outstanding service of one Arrowman. Nawakwa Lodge gave its first James E. West Fellowship award in 1999. Brother Ralph Orr was presented the 2012 James E. West Fel-lowship Award by Council Executive Brad Nesheim.

Each year, Nawakwa Lodge recognizes the Chapter that has done the best at promoting camping to the units in their dis-trict.    This  year’s  winner  is  Witchindin  Chapter  18.

As Scouting's National Honor Society, one of Nawakwa Lodge’s  basic  objectives  is  to  pro-mote the camping program of the Heart of Virginia Area Council. This should include troop and pack visita-tion by members of the chapter camping promotion committees.

Summer Camp is the high point of the year for a Scout, yet many Scouts are hesitant about attending camp because they've never been there. What younger Scouts, as well as older Scouts, are waiting for is someone to come and tell or remind them about all the things they can do at summer camp, and to encourage them to go to camp. Arrowmen interested in Camp Promotion should contact their Chapter Chief. Service on this committee satisfies one of the requirements for the First Year Arrowman award.

Camp Promotions

Camp Promotions Chair Alan Lloyd presents the Camp Promotion plaque to Alec Nelson, Witchindin Chapter 18 Chief.

Each year, Nawakwa Lodge recognizes the Chapter that has done the best at promoting The Order of the Arrow and conducting Unit Elections for units in their dis-trict.    This  year’s  co-winners are Witchindin Chapter 18 and Ta-kachsin Chapter 28.

By serving on an Election Team , an Arrowmen is helping to perform one of the most important duties of the Order of the Arrow, helping to honor and recognize those Scouts who best live up to the Scout Oath and Law.

Arrowmen interested in Unit Elec-tions should contact their Chapter Chief. Service on this committee satisfies one of the requirements for the First Year Arrowman award.

Unit Elections

Unit Election Chair Jim Young presents the Unit Elections plaque to Alec Nelson, Witchindin Chapter 18 Chief and Ryan McNeilly Takachsin Chapter 28 Chief.

The 2012 Nawakwa Lodge Fall Fel-lowship featured friendly competi-tion among the seven Chapters in the  Lodge.    This  year’s  games  in-cluded volleyball, tug-of-war, ulti-mate Frisbee and football.

After a hard afternoon of action, Pamunkey Chapter 7 won the Golden Cup, symbol of the Chapter Olympics champion.

Arrowmen should hone their skills over the next year to prepare them-selves to support their Chapter in the 2013 Chapter Olympics.

Order of the Arrow Legacy Project 2015 In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Order of the Arrow at Treasure Island Scout Camp, the OA is kicking off Legacy Project 2015. This project kicked off at NOAC 2012 and will conclude at NOAC 2015. The Nawakwa Lodge has four mile-stones to meet, one for each year until NOAC 2012. Milestones

2012 Lodge Rock Your lodge will select a rock from your home council's territory or council camp that will become a part of the Brother-hood fireplace at NOAC 2015.

2013 Legacy Panel Your lodge will paint the inside of this crate's lid to represent your lodge and its legacy in the Order. Lids will be cap-tured digitally and become part of the NOAC2015 celebrations.

2014 History Book Your lodge will prepare a written history. This book, along with lodge artifacts will become a part of the 100th Anniversary celebrations.

2015 Centennial Bonfire The crate itself will be filled with firewood from your local area and brought to NOAC 2015. The wood from each lodge will be burned in a ceremonial fire, with each lodge returning home with a vial of ash.

Nawakwa Lodge sent a contingent of scouts to the 2012 National Order of the Arrow Conference held at Michigan State University. More than 8,000 Arrowmen traveled to East Lansing, Michigan to participate in the 6 day conference focusing on top notch training sessions, cool recreational opportunities, attending evening shows full of theatrics and special ef-fects, and checking out the exciting programs NOAC has to offer. The Conference was definitely worth it this year and it

proved to be a great experience. Nawakwa Lodge traveled from Virginia to Michigan and back aboard a chartered bus for the 13 hour trip. Scouts spent the time watching movies, listening to IPods, reading, talking and sleeping. The largest contingent for Nawakwa lodge was Karakona

Chapter 19, sending 19 Arrowmen. Great showing of the Spirit of the Arrow. All in all, NOAC was a great experience with many of the Arrowmen wanting to attend the next NOAC if possible.

National Order of the Arrow Conference

Nawakwa Lodge Dance Team The Nawakwa Lodge Dance Team took 7 dancers to compete at NOAC 2012. Five dancers made it through very tough completion to reach the Final Round.

Three dancers were named to the Top Ten in their Competition Dance Style.

Adam Parker received a 4th place in the nation for the Northern Traditional dance style.

Baylor Dickerson received a 5th place in the nation for the (New) Prairie Chicken dance style.

These two had to compete in the Final AIA Competition Dance Show to receive a Mirror Board as their take home trophy.

All Dancers that made it to the Top Ten of their style, are asked to Staff at National Jamboree in 2013.

ORDER OF THE ARROW REPRESENTATIVE The Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth serv-ing  his  troop  as  the  primary  liaison  to  the  troop’s  lodge  or  chapter.  He  meets  the  unit’s  needs  by  providing  a  communication  and  pro-grammatic link to and from all Arrowmen, Scouts who are not presently members of the Order, and adult leaders. These efforts are meant to assist the unit and its members in achieving the mis-sion of the Boy Scouts of America, and at the same time fulfilling the  lodge’s  role  in  the  Strategic  Plan  of  the  Order  of  the  Arrow  of  being an integral part of the council. By setting a good example, he will enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to his unit. Is your OA Representative doing his job?
