SUCCESS STORIES
Sivamma of Nakkalanahalli village didn’t quite
realise the difficulties of defecating in the open until
her daughter-in-law got pregnant. The difficulties
faced by the daughter-in-law made Sivamma
uncomfortable. Coincidentally, she happened to
attend the Gram Panchayat Level Awareness
Programme (GPLAP) by Navya Disha organized in her
village under the aegis of Grameen Koota. The
awareness programme reiterated the thoughts of
Sivamma and convinced her to build a toilet in her
house. The Development Officer of Navya Disha,
Manjunath, supported Sivamma in getting her work
order and she received Grameen Koota’s loan for
building the toilet. Soon the toilet was built in her
house. One year later, when Manjunath visited her
house to review the impact of toilet construction,
Sivamma received him with generous gratitude for
bringing about change in her household. The
awareness programme had not just initiated the
toilet construction, but also ensured that the toilet
was being used by the family.
Naimat arrived at Baichapura village after getting
married. When she realised that in this village
everyone defecated in the open and she will also
have to join the bandwagon shocked her. She tried
to convince her husband about building a toilet but
he dismissed her requests saying that all villagers
defecate in the open and she must not fuss over it.
Moreover, they did not have the financial means to
construct a toilet. Fortunately, enough, Naimat
came to know about the awareness programme
(GPLAP) against open defecation being organized in
her village. She persuaded her husband to come
along with her and both of them participated in the
programme. Attending the training was a turning
point in Naimat’s life. Her husband realised the
importance of having a toilet in the house and he
decided not to delay it anymore. They received a
loan from Grameen Koota and constructed the
toilet. The government grant also followed. Naimat

expressed her immense gratitude to Navya Disha for convincing her husband and to Grameen Koota for
providing the much-needed financial support.
Savitramma of Devanganahalli village has a
daughter who is twelve years of age. Until
Savitramma attended the awareness programme,
she had not realised how difficult it would be for her
young one to continue defecating in the open.
Though she herself was defecating in the open, when
it came to her daughter, Savitramma could feel the
pinch. This thought pushed her to take a decision
that she will build a toilet in her house as soon as
possible. Navya Disha’s Development Officer
supported Savitramma in applying for a loan from
Grameen Koota to construct a toilet and also
supported her in getting the government grant. She
was so inspired by the awareness programme that
she started motivating other women in her village to
construct toilets. Interestingly, all 21 Grameen Koota
members of this village have now built toilets.
