JACKSONVILLEJacksonville held their last meeting May1st. We had 26 retirees. We collected $10 in national dues and $30 in local dues. Our give away raised $83. The winners of the two basket were Hannah Claudio and Brenda Wilson. The two gift cards were won by Eva Dona and Karen B. I would like to invite all NEX retirees to our next luncheon on August 7 at the Golden Corral on Blanding Blvd. at 11:30 am. And the last meeting for this year will be held December 5. Same place same time. We look forward to seeing everyone.

OAKLANDIn May 2019, we had lunch at our go to Pier 29 Alameda restaurant overlooking the USS Hornet Museum and the Ballena Bay Yacht Club.

We are a small but close knit group as we have not been able to attract new members since the closure of Naval Bases in the late 90’s.

For Naval history buffs, in 1996 Naval Station Mare Island was closed. It opened in 1854 and was the first Naval Base on the West Coast. In 1975 it was declared a National Historic Landmark District.

We continue to share friendship, conversation and food every other month. Call or write if you plan to be in the neighborhood.

To all..... thank you for your camaraderie and staying in

touch. Have a great summer!

ORLANDOGreetings from the sunshine state!

Life is pretty quiet , here in Orlando, at least for the Orlando Chapter. Our group is getting smaller, but we still enjoy our monthly meetings. We are not only retired employees of the Navy Exchange, we are foremost friends.

We have lost one dear friend, and retired employee, from the Orlando Exchange. Sarah Lou Miller passed away on the 22nd of June 2019 and was laid to rest on the 29th.It would have been her 90th birthday. RIP dear friend, you will be missed. Sarah Lou and I, worked together at the Maxi Mart, in the office, for a number of years.

Another member, Joan Moss, has fractured a vertebrae, and has been house bound at her daughter’s for the past three weeks. No cast for her, only a brace. When I say only, I don’t mean to minimize her injury.

As we all know, you cannot put a cast on a fractured vertebrae. She needs to wait it out and rest. Our best wishes for a prompt recovery.

Doreen Costa, went to England for two weeks, and enjoyed her visit with her family.

Summer, as we all know, is here and no one has been spared from the heat. If not the heat, earth quakes and floods. No one has been spared.

Let us pray for one another, for a reprieve and courage to face each day.

Lots of love to all,

Francine AdamsPresident

PENSACOLAThe Spring meeting on March 21 gathered together a large cadre of NEXers who enjoyed, and benefited (pardon the pun) from a great presentation by Karen Lofland of NEXCOM on our various retirement programs, with lots of information about the health care aspects. She was joined by Assistant District HR Andrea Simek. Thank you Karen for coming really South (better weather) to provide us these updates so valuable to us.

On June 20 we held the Summer meeting at the Golden Corral; Frank Miller presented copies of our Mission Statement to everyone and led a discussion to review why we exist and our purpose. Thanks to Pete Peugeot, Frank provided an update on the status of the ongoing proposed consolidation and thoughts on its future. At the meeting new

officers were elected:

Charlene Gilbert as President and Linda Migues as Vice-President. This is a dynamic combo, close friends who have a deep interest in the NEREA and our local chapter. Charlene began her career in Pensacola, and after departing for management positions around the world has returned ‘home’ following her recent retirement. She brings much experience and administrative skills, and with Linda’s background and bubbly personality the chapter will be very active. They have already come up with several new ideas for social activities and are planning some ‘fun’ (they said! ) Congratulations to Charlene and Linda.

The Fall meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 19, 2 PM at The Golden Corral (location may change, if additional activities are selected). C. Ray Jones, Treasurer

TIDEWATER Our meetings still continue to grow with our wonderful and great members. We have a bunch of retirees who hardly ever attend a meeting but they faithfully support us by paying their dues and we really appreciate them for their generosity. A big “thank you” to all our members. I’m always wishing and hoping for more memberships.

In March, Herb and Jane Friedland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. To celebrate this special occasion, Jane and daughter Laurie are

1920 –Bumboating, named for small size, rustic merchant vessels which pulled alongside Navy Ships to peddle their wares, continued until 1920 when it was finally abolished by Navy Regulations. Sailors fostered unofficial arrangements with trades people, an indication that ships stores were inadequate and simply did not satisfy merchandise and service needs. 1923 -1943- Ship stores and ships service stores operated side by side. 1957 – A Univac file computer, with a memory capacity of 15,000 words and a printer that turned out typewritten data at the rate of 600 lines per minute, was installed and reduced operating costs by more that $50,000 a year. 1969 – Weekly output of a typical CVA ship store included 100,000 pounds of laundry, 10,000 pounds of dry cleaning and 3,000 haircuts. 1970’s – Navy Exchange food outlets entered the fast-food field with the creation of Chick-Inns, and nonfood services such as rent-all centers which offered reasonably priced rentals on everything from electric floor polishers to televisions sets and typewriters were established. 1986 – Strong sales growth is seen in apparel, consumer electronics, toiletries, jewelry and furniture, while tobacco products and convenience foods experience slight declines. 1993 – The Navy Exchange Service Command moved from Staten Island to Virginia Beach. Note the flyer for the Farewell Dinner and Dance in the Memories sections. 1994 – McDonald’s remained the largest food operation, and in 1994 was awarded a 10-year contract which called for the continued expansion of the chain throughout the Navy Resale System. Joining McDonald’s on the list of NEX food concessions was Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Taco Bell and International Deli. 2001 – NEX Salon’s were recognized for achieving $1 million in sales of Paul Mitchell professional hair care products. 2018 – NEXCOM launched a new 401(k) informational website where associates can learn about the 401 (k) plan, review plan documents, look at the fund fact sheets and use interactive tools.

taking a Transatlantic Cruise from Barcelona to Florida later this year. Herb was invited to stay home and pay the bill. Jane knows how to plan a trip, no extra baggage.

We take July and August off each year without having meetings. However, we usually get together to do something. On 5 August we are all having lunch at Gus and George’s, a restaurant

that’s been around Virginia Beach forever.

Our treasurer, Harvey Kislow who has been doing this job for over 8 years

wants to step down to have more time for family, fishing and travel. Hopefully we will announce his replacement in our next newsletter.

With this said, have a great summer, stay healthy, happy, and have lots of fun.

Big Hugs for all,Raye EatonPresident

JOHN HANCOCK TERMINATES ITS SERVICE AGREEMENT WITH THE RETIREMENT TRUST

In June of this year the John Hancock Insurance Company advised your Board of Trustees that it had made an internal business decision and was terminating its Pension Fund Check processing division. While this sound dire, it just means that the Trust must find an alternative service provider to replace John Hancock. The Trust is in the process of doing this and anticipates having a new provider

by the end of the year. As a retiree the only change you should notice is that the monthly payment statement or for some, a check, has a different name than John Hancock. The benefit remains the same, the method of delivery remains the same, only the name of the provider will change. When the new provider is selected, that information will be provided to all retirees.

NEREA NEWSLETTER NOW ON WEBSITE The NEREA Newsletter is now available on our website: http://www.nerea.org/. We are currently paying over $2,300 to publish and distribute printed copies of each newsletter. We can reduce these costs by eliminating distribution of printed copies to those NEREA members with internet access. You can now view the newsletter in color and, if you want, print a copy at home. Please let us know if you want to help us save money by sending an email to Tom Cunningham at: [email protected], asking him to delete your name from our mailing list. This will both save us money and help with the environment.
