MK16 MOD 2 STAND ASSEMBLYThe MK16 MOD 2 is a stainless steel fabricated assembly that is the basic and most often used stand configuration for mounting most conventional small arm weapons on shipboard platforms. The assembly consists of two main parts, the MK16 MOD 8 stand and the tripod. The stand can be mounted independent of the tripod as well.

Various stops, adaptors, and stow lock hardware are used in conjunction with the MK16 MOD 8 stand. Most Army and Navy small arms mounts are secured through use of a pintle, or shaft, that is fixed to the bottom of the mounts, yet pivots in its corresponding stand. Typically the Army uses a small pintle while the Navy uses a large pintle. Most train stops are set upon installation, while others need to be adjustable for deployment on other platforms. Likewise, stow locks for various mounts change in configuration from mount to mount or platform to platform. Below is a list of some of these accessories:

The MK26 Gun Mount has been in service for many years. Two configurations remain, a hard and soft mount. The hard mount absorbs the full recoil of a standard M2HB, while the soft mount reduces the recoil to allow for better operator control and lower mounting stresses. Both mounts can be furnished with or without ballistic shields.

Page 37: NAVSEA Weapons Listing

The MK38 25MM Machine Gun System (MGS) is comprised of the M242 25MM Automatic Gun and the MK88 Gun Mount. The purpose of this system is to provide a safe, reliable, and effective minor caliber gun capability to Fleet units. The 1300 pound, deck mounted system is manually trained and elevated by an operator, and is capable of firing NATO standard M790 series ammunition and the Navy MK210 HEI-T round. The system fires at a rate of 175 rounds per minute and fully loaded holds 170 rounds in the ammunition container and feed chute.

DESCRIPTION

The MK44 MOD 0 Gun Weapon System is a complete weapon system. It contains the weapon, the gun control unit, all the attaching hardware and cabling. It may be powered from any 24 VDC source capable of supplying 2500 watts of power. It has an interchangeable pintle which enables it to be mounted on a variety of platforms. The ammunition is supplied through a flexible feed chute enabling the weapon system to be fed from a remote ammunition storage system. The rate of fire is controlled by the gun control unit which is attached to the mount. Feedback from the gun drive motor supplies speed information to the gun control unit to maintain constant speed under varying load conditions. The attached trigger box assembly provides either right or left hand operation.

DESCRIPTION

NSWC Crane has recently designed an armament system which will allow the use of a GAU-16 .50 Caliber Machine Gun from the SH-60B, H, and F aircraft. The new armament system incorporates the MK94 Gun Mount, which utilizes “softmount” technology. The use of the MK94 Gun Mount reduces the recoil of the weapon transmitted to the airframeto approximately 350 pounds. This armament system has been thoroughly tested and has received flight certification by the Naval Air Warfare Center Patuxent River. Sixty (60) systems have been procured for the H60 community.

The MK95 MOD 1 Machine Gun Mount is used to mount two .50 Caliber M2HB Machine Guns, resulting in a weapon system firing rate of about 1,000 rounds per minute, or two GAU-16 Machine Guns resulting in a weapon system firing rate of about 1600 rounds per minute. When installed, each weapon is “soft-mounted” via a shock absorber to reduce transmitted weapon recoil and increase gunner controllability and hit probability. The mount has an ammunition capacity of 500 rounds (250 rounds per weapon) and is fabricated from corrosive resistant aluminum and stainless steel materials. The MK95 MOD 1 mount is usually shipboard mounted via a deck-mounted tripod and MK16 MOD 8 stand assembly. However, the mount can be adapted to any boat or vehicle that uses a MK16 MOD 8 stand. If desired, the mount can also be provisioned with an armament shield assembly.

FACTS ABOUT SMALL ARMS AND ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE

AS A RESULT OF VARIOUS FLEET ACTIVITIES CALLING TO DISCUSS THEIR INABILITY

OR LACK OF AUTHORITY TO REQUISITION AND REPLACE PARTS ON SMALL ARMS AND SMALL

ARMS MOUNTS, THE FOLLOWING CLARIFICATION IS PROVIDED.

ALL NAVY ACTIVITIES HOLDING AN ALLOWANCE FOR SMALL ARMS ARE AUTHORIZED

TO PERFORM ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL MAINTENANCE. THIS IS IN ADDITION TO NORMAL

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE COVERED BY MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENT CARDS. THE

GUIDING DOCUMENT FOR DETERMINING IF LOST OR FAILED PARTS CAN BE REQUISITIONED

AND REPLACED AT THE ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL IS THE ALLOWANCE PARTS LIST (APL) FOR

THE WEAPON.

THE APL CONTAINS AN ENTRY CALLED THE SOURCE MAINTENANCE AND

RECOVERABILITY (SMR) CODE. A TYPICAL SMR CODE WOULD BE PAOZZ. THE “PA” IS THE

SOURCE CODE AND IS ALWAYS THE FIRST TWO LETTERS. “PA” MEANS THE PART IS STOCKED

AND ISSUED BY THE REGULAR STOCK SYSTEM AND IS OBTAINED BY A FUNDED REQUISITION.

THE THIRD ENTRY IN THE EXAMPLE, “O”, IS THE MAINTENANCE CODE. THE “O” MEANS THE

PART CAN BE REMOVED, REQUISITIONED AND REPLACED AT THE ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL.

AN O OR 2 - 6 IN THIS POSITION MEANS THAT ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL MAINTENANCE CAN

REQUISITION AND REPLACE THE PART. ANY OTHER ENTRY SUCH AS “F”, “G”, “H” OR “D”

MEANS ORGANIZATIONAL MAINTENANCE IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO REQUISITION AND

REPLACE THE PART. THE FOURTH AND FIFTH ENTRIES IN THE EXAMPLE, “ZZ”, MEANS THE

PART IS NOT REPAIRABLE AND IS A THROW AWAY ITEM. FOR COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF

SMR CODES SEE NAVSUPINST 4423.14B.

PARTS CODED WITH A “PA” SOURCE CODE AND AN ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL

MAINTENANCE CODE CAN BE REQUISITIONED THROUGH THE REGULAR STOCK SYSTEM.

COSTS FOR THE PARTS ARE PAID BY THE REQUISITIONING ACTIVITY.
