AISUM Campaign Plan
• Purpose: The IN3/NAVSEA Crane AISUM Innovation Challenge aims to
align academic and industry interest to develop innovative technologies that
explore new approaches to map, navigate, search and exploit complex
exterior, interior and subterranean environments with autonomous mobile
robotics.
• Scope: The AISUM Innovation Challenge is organized into two broad but
complimentary areas (Systems and Virtual):
– FY21: Virtual track will develop software and algorithms using virtual models of systems,
environments and terrain in simulation based events
– FY22: Systems track will develop and demonstrate physical systems in live scenarios in
complex, unpredictable and diverse environments (MUTC)
• Focus: This will be a multi-year challenge initially focused on small airborne
Expeditionary Warfighter platforms expanding to additional size and type of
platforms later.

AISUM Concept
• Emerging Environment and Challenges• Kinetic contested land and littoral domains to all domains (sea, air, land, cyber, space)
• Geographically 2D (rural or urban sprawl) to 3D (dense urban clutter, Sub T, surface & undersea)
• Assured electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) to denied and degraded EMS (PNT, Communications, C2)
• AISUM Concept• AISUM is the convergence of artificial intelligence, robotic autonomous systems and SOF warfighting
functions - maneuver, intelligence, and effects
• AISUM creates tactical man-machine elements optimized to gain, maintain and extend access in contested, complex and congested environments
• AISUM provides decision advantage and the precise application of effects across the competition conflict continuum
• Conceptually - Where We Are Going• Robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, miniaturized sensors, cloud and edge computing, secure
autonomous communication networks
• Human-machine teams capable of greater mass, precision, access, certainty, speed, and range
• Maneuver, Intelligence and Effects in contested, complex and congested environments
