INTEGRATION In January 1944, 16 black enlisted men

gathered at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station it\ Illinois to begin a cram course that would tum them into the Navy's first African-American officers on active duty.

Although compelled to take this step, the Navy chose its officer candidates well.

All bad demonstrated top-notch leadership abilities as enlisted men. The pace was demanding and forced the 16

The first step in joining the National

Donor.Program is a blood test in which a PAGEANT small amount of blood is drawn from the arm. The tissue type is delivered from the blood specimen and entered into the National Registry. When a potential match is found, the donor is called in for additional blood testing to determine if the match is close enough for a transplant to take place.

During the bone marrow collection for a transplant, the donor is under a general or local anesthesia while marrow is drawn

Phyllis Haffner, secretary to regional manager ONR Detachment, Monterey, recently won 1st place in the Ms. Senior America of California Preliminary Pageant held recently at Leisure World in Laguna Hills .

Haffner, a California fmalist, will compete for the title of Ms. Senior America in Nashville, Tenn., in May.

CARNIVAL

LA MESA SCHOOL The La Mesa Elementary School

P.T.A. Carnival is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the school grounds.

Reduced price tickets for games and donation drawings will take place during the week before the carnival from March 8 through March 12 at school between 11 :30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

NAVY EXCHANGE CLUB ON WHEELS

This weekend, look for pallets of merchandise outside the Main Exchange as the NEX "Club on Wheels" rolls in. The "Club on Wheels" will be here on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 28, from noon to4p.m.

Last fall, the NEX Club opened in Alameda to serve the military community by providing a warehouse oriented retail outlet. Health and beauty aids, household supplies, clothing and food items are offered in value sized, value priced packages.

This weekend look for pallets of merchandise outside the Main Exchange.

EDUCATION COMMUNITY FORUM

The needs of employers in the 1990s and the changing direction of schools to meet those needs will be explored during a community forum Friday, Feb. 26.

Admission is free. The morning seminar will run from 8

a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Inn at Spanish Bay.

The theme of the event is "Education is Everybody's Business: The Skills Employers Want, The Skills Employers Need"

Giving an overview of educational trends and the keynote address will be management consultant and futurist Dr. Leo Coleman.

Coleman has been a professor in the California State University system and is currently working with private industry

councils, regional occupational programs, community colleges and four major aerospace corporations in career transition for displaced workers.

OPINIONS COUNT FOCUS GROUP MEETS

The NPS NEX extends an invitation to all of its patrons to comment on NEX operations, meet NEX personnel and have their questions answered during its Customer Focus Group meeting.

On Friday, Feb. 19, surviving Golden Thirteen member Lt. Cmdr. John Reagan (ret.), as guest speaker, gave an address to the 7th Annual Scholarship Dinner and Dance, hosted by the Monterey Chapter of the National Naval Officers Associa­tion and the NPS Equal Employment Office.

Reagan recounted his experiencs as a naval officer and noted the achievements of today's naval officers of African­American descent.
