SAVE THE CHILD BY LEADING HIM/HER TO NAVAJEEVAN. SPONSOR A CHILD TO REALISE HIS/HER DREAM 1

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare

11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges

girls face around the world.

Ending the cycle of violence against girl children is a global challenge faced by society. Violence

committed affects the girl child in various forms of life and it is the worst in the Indian society. It is deeply rooted

into the culture and although Indian society outwardly exhibits high respect for the girl child/woman and

availability of international legal instruments for decades to protect the girl child, thousands of brutal acts of

violence and neglect specifically targeting the girl child can be observed on a daily basis. For decades and

centuries, girl children continue to suffer from harm, exploitation and abuse. The formal systems and structures

established in society to safeguard the rights and thereby ensure their rights have failed miserably and therefore,

there is a significant percentage of girls victims of abuse and violence. The girls, especially, the adolescents

continue to suffer various forms of violence viz., Forced/Child Marriage, Female Genital Mutilation, Sexual

Exploitation, Prostitution, and Trafficking, Prenatal Sex Selection, Sexual Harassment in Schools and the

Workplace, Crimes Committed in the Name of "Honor", Sexual Assault in Conflict and Humanitarian Situations.

The situation of girls continues to remain the same for manifold reasons, though preventable.

The major gap is in the policy formulation and its implementation. Though many policies and legislations

are formulated they are not accessible to communities. They remain merely preserved in books. Therefore, it is

imperative to educate girls and empower them so as to fight violence by reporting such cases and maintaining

zero tolerance in matters of violence against girls. Communities should

be empowered and enabled to prevent such violence so that girls and

women can enjoy equal rights of protection and safety. Government

should make every effort to mainstream gender in every level and

ensure redressal mechanisms at every stage.

DIWALI CELEBRATIONS: The festival of lights was

celebrated at all centers of Navajeevan with great pomp and show. The

children enjoyed lighting crackers and adding more light and color to

their life. The festival signifies the victory of light over darkness,

knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair.
