The Naturelle staff is made up of 11 different young women with 11 different personalities that found a way to

harmonize their ideas into something magnificent. We wanted to show that being fashionable doesn’t mean you have to be vain and that true beauty starts from within. For many of us, this was our first experience producing a magazine. In the end we were able to prove to ourselves the great things we can accomplish if we set our minds to it and work together. Our passion for our work is seen in every article, photoshoot, and ad.

This premier issue was created to encourage the reader to find the things that make them beautiful instead of focusing on the negatives. We feature articles with tips on how to “de-stress” after a long day and encourage them to feel confident with out covering up. The fashion spreads feature styles for any young women, from the classy uptown gal to the edgy downtown chick. We hope to inspire our reader and keep them coming back for more.

1 Change into comfortable clothes. One of the first things I do when I get home is to take off my work clothes and throw on a t-shirt and some loose pants. My go-to ensemble consists of yoga pants and an old concert tee that was my parent’s in the 80’s.

2 Cook a healthy dinner – Recently, I’ve noticed how eating fast food meals leave me feeling heavy and sluggish. By adding more fresh fruits and vegetables to my diet, I’m providing my body with essential nutrients, which in turn gives me more energy.

3 Watch your favorite movie or any movie you know will put a smile on your face.

4 Laugh – Laughter has been proven to increase blood flow and lower tension. I love going to Pinterest and looking through the “humor” category. Believe me, you won’t regret it.

5 Give myself a pedicure! A fresh coat on my toes always makes me feel amazing. My personal favorite shade is Essie Fiji, a beautiful baby pink color that looks great on any skin type.

6 Disconnect. Turn off my phone, power down my computer and turn the tv off! These devices can affect your ability to relax, because they stimulate your brain.

7 Do a crossword or Sudoku.

8 Take a relaxing shower. There is nothing quite like a hot, relaxing shower. It’s a great way to energize your body and mind. It is an excellent ritual to switch your brain from work mode to home mode.

9 Clean. I always try to focus on one room in my apartment and cleaning it from top to bottom. The satisfaction I feel at the end makes it totally worth it.

10 Read. Before bed, I always try to finish a chapter of a book. Reading before bed instead of watching tv, relaxes my mind and makes falling asleep so much easier.

11 Drink. Pour myself a glass of my favorite wine, Clo Du Bois Chardonnay. If you can’t or don’t drink alcohol, chamomile tea is a great alternative.

12 Snuggle. Curling up with my boyfriend and a blanket on our couch after a long day is my #1 way to relieve stress.

You turn the page in your latest issue of a fashion magazine, and what do you

think? Observe the still sculptured photo and what has been captured. Begin at the focal point and work your way out. You admire how the fabric hugs the skin and how it falls down the small of a back. You think - wow that is beautiful.

You can be your own model too - with a mirror and $50. The secret is to be patient and kind - just like you would with love. Go into this venture with positivity, guts, and spontaneity. You cannot judge a book by its cover, just as you cannot judge fashion that helplessly sits on a hanger.

First, spend time locating your local charity shop and consignment clothes stores. Then take a day to

think about what you feel will liven up your wardrobes’ current state, and have your ideas somewhere in arm’s reach during your trip. On the day of shopping, step outside of your comfort zone, and choose pieces that are out of the ordinary and make them extraordinary. Mix and match, layer and strip - experiment. Don’t be afraid to try on something that looks like it’s from the eighties. The eighties were a great time from what I’ve heard - dancing to Depeche Mode in fitted high-waisted jeans, who would complain! The most enticing advantage to thrift shopping, is that its fabulously discounted fashion that someone spent time wearing, so it holds value and can be worn like new just for you. Don’t be overwhelmed by the sheer size and selection when you stop by your first thrift store -embrace it and

If you happen to fall in love with an outfit, put it on, yet it’s not the vision you expected - take it off and try again! Masterpieces do not just appear, they take work and determination. It’s ok if the original pieces did not sync, hook on a colorful bangle or slip on a contrasting jean vest - it could be the missing bridge to your verse. Other pitfalls that stump new fashionistas are correlating colors. Since when was it cool to be draped in all matching everything? You wear what looks good. Normally, black and white go with everything -but here’s another secret...so do the other infinite colors in the universe! It is not a necessity to make sure your complete ensemble matches from headband to high heel. It is a necessity to feel comfortable in your

second pair of skin, and to know you

made the outfit - it didn’t make you.

As we approach the final touch to

your masterpieces...document what

you’ve learned, whether it came

from a friend or a how-to website.

All of the knowledge you collect is

take your time to sift through the goodness that awaits. If you can’t get through the whole store in one visit, come back another time - you will never be disappointed. Now, if you don’t find much at one place, try another part of town - it might be a better pick for you. Throughout yo u r j o u r n ey o f b e c o m i n g, remember to be patient, persistent, and spontaneous - your results will show the undoubted delightfulness to an ensemble that you have created.

Finding Peace in Popular Tourist Spots

Written by Erika Schenkelberg

M ost people would agree that a trip to Europe isn’t complete without seeing a popular monument or museum in a city thats been raved about by countless

friends, family members, and television show hosts. Last year I decided to spend five months traveling around Europe and visiting all of the typical places a first time backpacker likes to see. No matter how many times the Colosseum, London Eye, and Sagrada Familia are shown in pictures or on television, there’s nothing like seeing these breathtaking monuments in person.

Page 28: Naturelle magazine

26 NaturelleTravel

Naively, I hadn’t taken into account the fact that there would be hundreds of people pushing and shoving their way to the perfect photo opportunity. Although meeting new people from all over the world and getting lost in the crowds is a lot of fun, sometimes I craved an escape to a quiet, tree covered oasis where my only company was nature. If you end up looking for places like this on your travels too, my best advice is to talk to the friendliest locals you come across in whichever city you happen to find yourself needing some peace and quiet. There are plenty of great guide books that suggest beautiful hikes, gardens, or “path less traveled” cities to visit. The problem with following their advice is that the thousands of other travelers toting that book are heading to these destinations with the same idea in mind.

Locals have the most experience in finding the best views and hidden gems of their city. I suggest talking to locals for any travel advice you’re looking for. I used my guidebook for directions and ratings on hostels or hotels, but realized early that talking to friendly people I met while exploring the city was the most effective way to have the best experience in the city.

If you’re staying in a dizzyingly crowded city for vacation, taking a day trip to a national park or a quiet little town is a perfect way to feel relaxed and refreshed on a vacation with crammed schedules of running from monument to monument.

Page 29: Naturelle magazine

27

Just to give you a head start on finding your perfect “vacation from your vacation”, here were my favorite quiet places from my travels:

ITALY 3 hours from Rome and less than an hour away from Naples is Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that buried the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii. It’s the only active volcano on the mainland of Europe, and offers breathtaking views of Naples.

There are probably 50-100 people taking buses to the crater, but hardly anyone hikes from the base. It’s steep, even for more experienced hikers, but efinitely worth the effort.

AUSTRIA 1.5 hours from Salzburg is the fairytale town of Hallstatt. Although the town itself is becoming crowded with tourists, the area is picturesque and has some great hiking and boating opportunities. “Soleweg” is one of Austria’s most beautiful trails.

PORTUGAL 30 minutes from Lisbon is Sintra, a city with spectacular views, architecture, and hikes. For a mix of architecture and nature, check out Quinta De Regaleira. The Santa Maria Trail is a hiking trail that ascends to the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace. There are paved paths through the forest, so it’s a great hike for all ages.
