Reconnecting Children with Nature
“If we want children to flourish, to
become truly empowered, then let
us allow them to love the earth
before we ask them to save it.”
David Sobel
The city life is colored by a modernity that detaches
a child from nature. From toddlers to teenagers,
children now spend most of their time indoors with
gadgets as companions.
Children are also becoming accustomed to the
consumptive urban lifestyle - seeking instant
gratification and always in need to own more.
This lifestyle does not allow children to appreciate
the process behind their consumption habits and its
consequences. How long did it take for their food to
grow? Who grew them? When they throw things
away, where does it all go?
The Dilemma
Of City kids
knowing
vs realizing
Children are becoming familiar with the
ecological issues our world faces early on
– climate change, deforestation, plastic
pollution and many more.
How can we ensure that this knowledge
translate into empathy and action?
How can we help them realize that they
too are part of the solution?
Being exposed to living ecosystems
with plants and animals allows
children to appreciate the
interconnectedness of life.
It is time we give children the
platform to learn from with the
wisest teacher of all – Mother
Nature herself.
