The aquatic resources of the McKenzie River are world class as is the recreation that surrounds it on the District. High Cascades geology at the top of the District’s wildernesses produce crystal clear, spring-fed waters that flow through the older, weathered, flashy West Cascades lower in the watershed. Given its amazing groundwater resources, the McKenzie River is the sole source of drinking water for the City of Eugene, OR, and a strong partnership exists with the municipality, Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB). The District is working with EWEB on a private land riparian restoration and protection market that has potential to be fed by Forest Service Stewardship funding with a view to all-lands, whole watershed restoration. This Hydrologist position would also being working on the Lower South Fork McKenzie Floodplain Enhancement Project, a multi-million dollar restoration of a 400-acre floodplain below Cougar Dam. In recent years, the District Hydrologist has also been conducting Level 1 Groundwater Inventory surveys of several small to large springs on the District and has been a pilot for input of this data into the Forest Service national groundwater database.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Knowledge and competence in solving hydrologic problems (practical and theoretical). Ability to analyze hydrologic data. Familiarity with the Watershed Inventory Tracking (WIT) system and the Natural Resource Management (NRM) temperature database. GIS experience required. Road decommissioning and stream restoration experience is very desirable.
