Last week Iwas honored to attend aweekend yoga retreat with studentsofalocalyogateacherwhoisagood

friend. Some in attendance had alreadyachievedcertificationasayogateacherand/oryogatherapistwhileothersareworkingtoward certification. My agenda was topolish my practice techniques, de-stressandsocialize.

The whole experience powerfullyreminded me of all the good that has

cometomeasI’vetraveledthepathofpublishingthismagazine,highlightedbymanyspecial relationships. For example, the yoga teachermentionedaboveand I felt aninstantconnectionthefirsttimewemet.Thepurposeofourmeetingwasbusiness,butwetalkedfortwohoursasfriendsbeforewetogetherconsideredthebenefitsofheradvertisinginNatural Awakenings,whichshecontinuestothisdaybecauseit’sbeengoodforbusiness.Sincethen,wehavehadmanylongtalksbyphoneandinperson.SomedaysIcalltoask,“Ineedsomesanity,canyouhavelunch?”Inourwarmhugsatmeetingandpartingwebothfeelthelove.

Kat Brooks’ story on page 14 exemplifies that the ways in which we maintainrelationshipscanhaveaprofoundeffectonourlives.Alocalaward-winningdocumentaryfilmproducer,shehasusedherarttoshareherexperienceoftheanxiousisolationsomanyofusfeelfromoverrelianceonmachinerysuchasemail,phonesandFacebooktostayconnected.

wetlandsasacombinationofeco-tourism,educationandrecreation.ThisnewventureisworkingwithenvironmentaljournalistandnaturalistBobMarshalltoturnoutdoorfunintoabusinessthatalsoprovides“grasstops”advocacy–teachingpeoplewithauthorityaboutanimportantenvironmentalissue.

Marie Gould and Lindsay Pick have partnered in this endeavor, targetingconventionattendeesandtourists,butalsolocalfolksinterestedinseeingthewetlandsbyboat.GouldsaidshegotthebuglongagowhenshestartedtakingboattripsoutinthemarshesandswampswithMarshall,herhusbandandpartnerof40years.

“Wewerealwaystakingpeopleouttherebecauseveryfewpeoplespendalotoftimeoutthere,”Gouldsaid.“Tothemcoastalerosionwasjustanabstractnotion.”

Louisiana’swetlandsaredisappearingatarapidrate–scientistshaveestimatedafootballfieldevery30minutes–andMarshallhasbeenwritingstoriesaboutthisissueandothersrelatedtoitinhisTimes-Picayunecolumnforyears.Nowhegetstoleadtourswherehecanteachvisitorsandnewcomerstotheareaabouttheissueheholdssodear.

“Wetellthemthewholehistoryofourwetlands-howtheywerebuilt,howtheyhavedegraded,andwhattheimpactisonthefishermenandournationaleconomy,”Marshallsaid.“WethengettotakethemoutandshowthemthebeautyandjusthowperilousasituationthisregionisinandwhatitmeanstoNewOrleansandthenation.”

The tour leaders stay incontactwith their customersbyemail tokeep theminformedofissuesthatcomeupinCongressthatcouldimpactLouisiana’swetlandssotheycancontacttheirrepresentatives.

“Thisisnotjusttakingpeopleouttothrowmarshmallowsatalligators,”Marshallsaid.“Thisisaneducationalprogram…Wehopetoincreasethenumberofadvocates.”

The firm officially began operations in March 2012, and has since won afellowshipfromSocialEntrepreneursofNewOrleans(nowPropeller)andwasinthefirstroundofthisyear’sIdeaVillageWaterChallenge.Thetoursaremostlybykayak,althoughsomegroupsgooutinmotorizedboats.Theexcursionsareverycustomizedandoftenlocationsdependonthewindandthetide,sincewaterlevelchangessomuchandcancausetroubleforboats.

2013 – The Year of Cycling2013istheYearofCycling,accordingtotheorganization

that brought to the region the Mississippi RiverTrail(MRT),a3,000-milestretchthatbeginsattheheadwatersoftheriverinMinnesotatoitsendattheGulfofMexico.The path, completed in St. Charles, St. John the Baptistand Jefferson, andplanned for St.Bernard, canbeusedbypedestriansandequestriansaswellasbicyclists,butinmanylocationsthereisalsoacanoetrail–indeedlastyearwastheYearofPaddling.

TheYearofCyclingwillincludeteneventscenteredaroundbicycling–oneeventineachstate.Theorganization’swebsitehasacalendarofeventsrelatedtocyclingandtheriverthroughouttheyear.

“TheMississippiRivertrailisreallyabouteconomicdevelopmentofcommunities,healthandwellnessandconservationofnaturalresources,”saidTerryEastin,MRT’sExecutiveDirector.“Itishelpinggetpeopleoutoftheircarsandontobicycles,reducecarbon emissions, start having healthy lifestyles and new tourism opportunities,especiallyinthesouthernstates.”

According to Eastin, the local Regional Planning Commission has been“instrumental”inhelpingestablishnewprojectsintheregiontoexpandtheMRT.“Tobehonest,theworkthatisongoinginLouisianaisthemostexcitingwork,”shesaid.

Theorganization,whichincorporatedin1996astheSouthernMississippiRiverTrail,joinedforcesin1999withtheIowaNaturalHeritageFoundationtotakeontheentirelengthoftheriver–fromLakeItasca,MinnesotatothesoutheasterntipofPlaqueminesParish.Theextentofthetrail,whichisonbothsidesoftheriver,includes400communitiesin123countiesand10states.Itconnects60nationalparksandwildliferefugesalongthetrailthroughtheMississippiRiverConnectionsCollaborative.

TheMRT’s20memberBoardofDirectors includes threeLouisianamembers-ChrisWilliamsfromPineville,DanJapresofNewOrleansandDeborahFagenofSlidell.

“WewanttoencouragepeopletoenjoytheriverandenjoytheTrail,”Fagensaid.“ItservesasalinktoimportantnaturalareasandfeaturesandattractionsalongtheTrail–inLouisiana77communitiesand17parishes,that’salotofthestate.”

disabilityanddaysofffromworkthananyother health condition.A recentstudypublishedbytheBritish Medical Journal, involving more than 500patients,concludesthatpracticingtheAlexanderTechnique, an awarenesspractice to identify and correctunconsciousnegativephysicalhabitsrelated to posture and movement,breathingandtension,combinedwithmoderateexercise,canhelp. “It was a phenomenon,” Brooks recalled. “People reallyconnectedwiththeideaofsteppingawayfromtheInternetandinteractingfacetoface.Socialmediahasbecomeasubstituteforhumanconnections–peoplesitacrossfromeachother,buttheyareontheirphones.”

Lastsummer,Brookspackedherbags,sawadoctortogetaplanforgettingoffpillsandcigarettes,thenplannedthemosteconomicalroutearoundthecountry.Theresultwasanintense,17-weekjourneyfromweaknessandworthlessnesstocourageandstrength.

FacilitiesManagerKathleenWelch said shehastheuniqueopportunity,withtheorganization’ssupport,touseherenvironmentaleducationbackgroundandinteresttopursuestrategiesingreenbuildingandhistoricpreservationinupgradingthetwobuildings.

“WhatIwantedtolookatishowtomeldthetwoandsupportboththefunctionsinthebuildingsandthedaytodayactivitiesthattakeplaceinsidethem,”saidWelch.Sheiscurrentlyworkingoninspectingallthreebuildingsandinvestigatingthepossibilitiesof employing solar, redoing the insulation, and updating thewater systems to include rainwater catchment for irrigationoftheextensivegrounds.
