The Iroquois

Consist of 5 tribes: Cayuga Onondaga Seneca Mohawk Oneida

Located in cultural region of the Eastern Woodlands. A cultural region in an area

where people with similar ways of life live.

The Iroquois did not get along well and many died. Deganawidah and Hiawatha, two men from different tribes, convinced

others to end the fighting. This lead to the formation of the Iroquios League in 1570.

The league had 50 representatives who met once a year at the Great Council of Fire and created laws.

A Violent History

The Iroquois lived in what is now New York state.

They fished, hunted deer and elk, and grew corn, squash and beans.

Lived in longhouses; a building made from saplings and bark of tree. Over 100 ft. long Several families lived in one building.

Everyday Life

The Iroquois celebrated 6 festivals throughout the year.
