    Great Inventors

    Edison

Thomas Edison was born on February, 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. Even

at the age of seven, Edison asked his parents lots of questions. He was

interested in world history, English literature and enjoyed reading and

    reciting poetry.

His poor hearing prevented him from taking advantage of formalschooling. So, his parents taught him and by age of eleven he knew how

to use the resources of the local library where he read every book.

By the age of twelve his interests in the sciences increased,

especially Newton's physical laws which helped him improve his own free

    style of clear thinking.

At the age of sixteen, after working in a variety of telegraphoffices, he finally came up with his first invention, called an "automatic

repeater". Then he continued working hard on his experiments all the

    time.

In 1879 Edison invented the first practical electric light bulb.

Then, he introduced the world's first economically viable system of

centrally generating and distributing electric light, heat and power.

At the turn-of-the century, Edison invented the first practical

    Dictaphone, mimeograph, and storage battery.

Thomas Edison died on October 18th, 1931 in New Jersey. He was 84

years of age. His great inventions added more to the wealth of the

world. He was indeed "The most influential figure of our millennium".
