SECTION A: ESSAY 50 MARKS
SECTION B: LONGER TRANSACTIONAL TEXT 30 MARKS
SECTION C: SHORTER TRANSACTIONAL TEXT 20 MARKS
2. Answer ONE question from EACH section.
3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.
4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.
5. You must plan (e.g. using a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words.etc), edit
and proof-read your work. The plan must appear BEFORE each text.
6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such and handed in. It is advisable to
draw
a line through the planning.
7. You are strongly advised to spend approximately:
80 minutes on SECTION A 40 minutes on SECTION B
30 minutes on SECTION C
8. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in this
question paper.
9. Give each response a suitable title/heading.

SECTION A: ESSAY
QUESTION 1
x Spend approximately 80 minutes on this section. x Write an essay of between 250 and 300 words in length (1 to 1 ½ ) on ONE of
the following topics.
x Write down the number and the title of the essay you have chosen. e.g. 1.1. My idea of a perfect family.
x Provide your OWN TITLE if your choice is QUESTION 1.2,1.7.1, 1.7.2
1.1 My idea of a perfect family [50]
1.2 Write a story that has the following words in it: A point of no return … [50] NOTE: The words given in the topic MUST appear somewhere in your essay. You need to come up with your own title.
1.3 The electricity power crisis in South Africa. Discuss how this affects big businesses as well as ordinary people in our country. What solutions can you suggest to this serious problem? [50]
1.4 Cellphones and laptops must be allowed in classrooms. Do you agree? [50]
1.5 You once had an experience which led you to understand more about honesty. Describe what happened. [50]
1.6 Celebrities do not make good role models for young people. Discuss this statement by looking at both sides of the argument. [50]
1.7 Choose ONE of the pictures on the next page and write an essay on a topic that comes to mind. Write the question number (1.7.1 or 1.7.2)

2.1 A FORMAL LETTER: LETTER TO THE PRESS
You were disturbed by the behavior of some politicians during the February State of the nation address by the country’s President. Write a letter to the editor of one of the local newspapers and express your views and feelings regarding what happened on that evening. [30]
2.2 A CURRICULUM VITAE – JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE
Study the following advertisement.
Respond to this advert by writing only your experience which is related to the advertised job and also highlight the personal qualities and skills you have which you think will market you for the job.

A very close friend of yours is associating with bad company and neglecting his/her school work. However he/she is headstrong and does not get the point.
Write a dialogue of the conversation you had in which you attempted to warn him/ her. [30]
2.4 A SPEECH
According to local media, there is a growing rate of young people who commit suicide in your area due to inability to cope with today’s stressful life. As an invited school psychologist, write a speech you are going to deliver to learners at a nearby school to warn them about the habit. In your speech, highlight some early signs of suicidal tendencies to be observed and also give advice on how to help fellow learners that you suspect to be suicidal.

3.1 A FORMAL INVITATION
As the chairperson of the RCL at your school, you are tasked with a duty to invite a guest speaker for the annual academic awards to be held later in the year.
Write a formal invitation to the person. You will be expected to include all the necessary details he/she will need to know. [20]
3.2 DIARY ENTRIES
You were fortunate to win the finals of the South African Idols singing competition.
Write TWO days’ diary entries where you capture your feelings and thoughts you first had on the eve of the first time you were going for auditions; and for the day you won the finals.

3.3 INSTRUCTIONS
With the on-going electricity crisis in the country, households are constantly
advised to use electricity wisely. Draw up a list of instructions (8-10) that could be
distributed to your community to help saving electricity at homes.

This memorandum must be used together with the attached English Fal Assessment Rubrics for SECTION A , B, AND C.
SECTION A
QUESTION 1
1.1 My idea of a perfect family (Descriptive, Reflective ,Narrative) x If descriptive a candidate must describe his/her idea or experience of a
perfect family in a vivid manner. x Content must make it clear why he/she feels happy to belong to such a
family. Or why he/she would like to belong to such a family. x If reflective, ideas may include, among other things, single parent- headed
family, honesty, love and respect, the roles to be played by family members etc.
x If narrative, there should be a story with a strong story line x There must be a convincing series of events in that family. x There should be a logical sequence of tense.
1.2 A point of no return (Narrative, Descriptive, Reflective)
x If narrative, a story with a strong story line must be clearly evident. x There must be a series of events leading to the crossing of the line and
reaching a point of no return. x There should be a logical sequence of tense. x If written as a reflective essay, the candidate must give a personal account of
thought processes and emotions that go with the particular experience which climaxed at a point of no return.
x If descriptive, the writer should create a picture of words, trying to use as many senses as possible to make the description clear.
1.3 Electricity crisis in South Africa (Descriptive, Narrative) x If descriptive, there must be a clear description of the problem of power
shortage in the country. x Candidate must show how the problem affects the different sectors of the
population. x If narrative there should be a story line. x Ideas are presented in a systematic way: the causes of the problem, possible
solutions to the crisis, ways to prevent it from happening again etc.

x Argumentative: the essay must offer one distinct opinion/side. x There should be a clear focus on points for OR against the statement. x Subjectivity and strong opinions to support argument
1.6 Honesty (Narrative, Descriptive)
x If narrative, candidates must tell a personal experience that helped him/her understand the quality of honesty.
x There must be a strong story line with a plot that leads to the writer gaining insight on honesty.
x There should be a logical sequence of tense. x If presented as a descriptive, there must be a clear description of an
experience or event which resulted in a vivid demonstration of the quality of honesty.
1.7 Celebrities do not make good role models (Argumentative, Discursive, Narrative) x If discursive, the writer must be objective and strive to give a balanced view
of both sides of an argument. x Calm and well-reasoned statements must be presented. x Opposing views are presented impartially. x Candidates may give an indication of his/her personal opinion in the
conclusion. x If narrative, there must be a strong story line with a plot that leads to the
writer to make such conclusions. x If argumentative, the essay must offer one distinct opinion/side. x There should be a clear focus on points for OR against the statement.
1.8 Interpretation of pictures
x Pictures may be interpreted in anyway. x There must be a clear connection between the interpretation and the picture. x A suitable title must be given for the chosen essay. x Any appropriate tense may be used to present the chosen topic. x The following ideas are among others that may be explored by candidates:
1.8.1 - race relations/ family union / taking care of the aged / friendship / togetherness 1.8.2 – first time on a plane/ a memorable trip to overseas / a lost plane / meeting a
friend on a plane/ a plane crash, a journey by bus/train/coach.

2.1 A LETTER TO THE PRESS
The letter should express a personal view on the events during the state of the nation address.
x A letter must have an introduction, a body and a conclusion. x It must have a writer’s address, date, recipient’s address, salutation, closing
and a signature. x The candidate must express their views and opinions [30]
2.2 CURRICULUM VITAE: JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
