Kathmandu University : Kathmandu University is an autonomous not-for-profit, non - government institution dedicated to maintain high standards of academic excellence. Since its establishment year in 1991 it is devoted to bringing knowledge and technology to the service of mankind. It is committed to develop leaders in professional areas through quality education. The main thrust of KU is to become a research-cum-teaching university in science, management, engi-neering, medical sciences, arts, and education.

School of Engineering: Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Geomatics Engineering and Civil Engineering are running different academic pro-grams in undergraduate, graduate and PhD level. School is also actively involved in R&D with major focused on Renewable Energy Technology, Electri-cal Energy Generation, Transmission and Distri-bution.

Background and Objectives: Electricity and communication are vital infrastruc-tures of development of a country. Level of electrifi-cation and communication coverage is basic indica-tors of development of a country. Development of the electric power sector will play a vital role not only to increase access to electricity but also to increase the per capita energy consumption. It will also replace the traditional energy sources and decrease the reliance on imported petroleum prod-ucts. The per capita energy consumption in Nepal is only 16 Giga Joules (GJ) which is very low even compared to average Asian figure of 37 GJ. Tradi-tional energy sources comprise 80% to the total

energy use. The bulk of the remaining 20% of commercial energy is imported. Similarly, development of the communication sector in Nepal is not satisfactory; most of the communication sectors of Nepal are play-ing a vital role to increase the Tele-penetration rate at urban areas inspite of very poor services and Tele-penetration rate in rural ar-eas. Actual development of communication sector can be possible only by developing collaborative research and developing the in-dustries which may design and manufacture the electronics prod-ucts. While various policies, plans and strategies are in place for the development of power and communication sector, the implementa-tion has been far from satisfactory. The aim of this seminar is to highlight status of the Nepal’s exten-sive commercial and academic capabilities in the Electric Power and Communication sector and to explore the new areas of re-search and development. The Seminar covers the following general topics with respect to Electrical Engineering Development in Nepal A. Electrical power sector development ♦ Power System Security and Reliability

♦ Transmission and Distribution System Planning

♦ Electricity Generation Sources for Nepal

♦ Hydropower Development

♦ Alternative energy technology

♦ Electricity Pricing

♦ Electricity Imports and Exports

♦ Electricity Policy and Regulation

♦ Demand side management

♦ Other topics in power systems

B. Communication sector development

♦ Signal processing

♦ Networks and distributed systems

♦ Wireless communication and applications

♦ Rural communication.

♦ Power line communication.

♦ ICT

♦ IC design and packaging

♦ Hi-Performance RF & Microwave

♦ Other topics in communication
