School improvement
through people
development
Improving a school is fundamentally about developing the knowledge and expertise of its people. This is the principle that the Teacher Development Trust puts at the heart of our work to
develop school leaders.”
“
The Teacher Development Trust is an
internationally leading charity in the fields of
staff development and school improvement
through people development. Founded in 2012
by practising teachers and school leaders, we
believe powerful professional learning helps
children succeed and teachers thrive.
Our effective, evidenced-based work with
schools and colleges influences change. We’ve
helped hundreds of schools and leaders create
lasting whole-school improvement and grow
a learning culture for all, making a real impact
on the quality of teaching and professional
progression.
As national thought leaders – with a major
role in building the DfE CPD Standards and
the Early Career Framework – our team of
experienced leadership experts, curriculum
designers and facilitators have been integral in
the DfE’s development of the reformed NPQ
frameworks since their conception.
Our NPQ coalition includes partnerships with
national bodies, schools and experts, such
as the NAHT, Forum Strategy, Greenshaw
Learning Trust and River Learning Trust, Kat
Howard and Claire Hill (authors of the book
Symbiosis: The Curriculum and the Classroom)
and Jonny Uttley (co-author of Putting Staff
First).
Placing professional learning front and centre
in sustainable, school-led improvement, our
suite of NPQs have been designed as routes
into the Chartered College of Teaching’s
programmes and accreditations, strengthening
collegiality and professional identity.
The Art, Craft & Science of School Improvement through People Development
The assessment is now much simpler and takes
less time – instead of the previous, long project
alongside your study, with the new NPQs you
spend your course focused on learning and
understanding and then, when finished, write a
1500 word response to a case study. This is an
open-book assessment where you have 8 days
to respond. You are also assessed on having
engaged with at least 90% of the course including
online learning, virtual and physical sessions.
The content for all the courses, including the NPQ
for Senior Leaders, Headteacher and Executive
Leaders has been completely refreshed and
based around brand new frameworks which link
carefully to the latest evidence on leadership
and teaching, including strong links to the Early
Career Framework.
If you’ve had experience with the old suite of
qualifications then here are some key differences:
There are three new specialist qualifications
instead of the old, generic NPQ for Middle
Leaders:
n NPQ for Leading Teaching (NPQLT).
n NPQ for Leading Behaviour and Culture
(NPQLBC).
n NPQ for Leading Teacher Development
(NPQLTD).
NPQs are changing

Our approach –
collaboration, flexibility
and blended learning
5 TDTrust.org/npqs [email protected] 020 3961 6794
We have six key principles that inform our NPQ
curriculum design and grow people centred leadership
n Learning activities will allow you to hold a mirror up to your current
setting, understanding the underlying mechanisms, reflecting on what works,
understanding the history of change;
n You will be given a window into other settings, broadening your
understanding of leadership in different phases, contexts and areas to help you
respond to a range of needs;
n Case studies will focus on narrated expertise, not just showing what works,
but the expert thinking underpinning it and how to apply and practice it yourself.
The best leaders get to work alongside other great leaders and this approach
will allow you to feel you are virtually mentored by some of the most effective
leaders in the system;
n A focus on implementation & change will challenge you to repeatedly
apply learning to real-life problems, thinking in detail how your skills of team-
leadership, communication and change management can overcome doubts,
managing up and down to gain buy-in, with ideas that can be applied in real
roles;
n A differentiated learning journey that builds on key learner personas, using
detailed examples of real participants to help facilitators understand each
learners’ needs, including their home life and learning environment, their school
context, their own career aims and worries;
n A continued focus on practice challenges, equipping you with the necessary
knowledge, habits and skill to overcome the most common and difficult
situations that you are likely to encounter.

The learning experience
Each week, you’ll be logging into our Learning
Platform to read, watch videos, listen to audio
and then engage in online discussions with your
peers and your course facilitator who will provide
help and feedback along the way. This is where
your main learning takes place. You’ll then attend
a series of regular webinars including:
n national webinars with all of your peers on the
same course from around the world where
you’ll hear from top experts
n local webinars with your peers from your
local delivery centre where you’ll discuss and
reflect on your progress and explore real-life
challenges
n local face-to-face sessions hosted by your
local delivery centre where you’ll have
opportunity to solve problems, reflect, discuss
and debate and meet with real leaders from
local schools.
