National Junior Honor Society is a club designed to honor students who exhibit excellence in each of the five pillars of NJHS: Scholarship (academic success), Citizenship, Character, Service, and Leadership. Your outstanding GPA shows that you excel academically. This part of the application is your opportunity to share how you have demonstrated citizenship, character, service and leadership via involvement in your school and community. Directions:

Part 3: Application Essay

Below you will find a description of qualities that are reflective of students in the National Junior Honor Society. On a separate piece of paper, explain how you personally believe that you have exhibited each of these characteristics. Please either type your essay or write it very neatly in blue or black ink. Each of the four areas should be covered in a complete paragraph with the appropriate heading of the topic being covered. In the fifth paragraph, explain why you feel you would like to be a member of the National Junior Honor Society. Please be specific and provide details for each section! (Please note: this instructional page is for your use and does not need to be submitted along with the final essay.) Before submitting your essay, please proof read it carefully to ensure that it is well written and that you have covered all of the required criteria.

1. Scholarship “Scholarship” refers to demonstrating academic success. Please explain why doing your

best in school and making good grades is important to you.

2. Participation & Leadership Please describe your experiences in school/community activities (including any accomplishments, achievements or leadership opportunities that you are proud of!) and explain why you think it is important to be involved in your school and community.

3. Citizenship & Character “Citizenship” is your commitment to your community, city, state, and/or nation. Demonstrating good citizenship could also include doing things for the betterment of your community, going out of your way to help others, or even demonstrating “Cougar

Respect” at school. “Character” is who you are when no one is looking. Demonstrating good character could include showing courtesy, concern, helpfulness, friendliness, and respect toward each and every individual, regardless of differences. Please describe why it is important to you to demonstrate good citizenship and character and explain how you personally strive to exhibit these qualities.

4. Service “Service” implies participating in community service activities or other opportunities designed to help others. This may include organizations and activities for which you have volunteered your time to benefit other people. Please explain how you have demonstrated a willingness to volunteer, to gladly take on tasks that benefit the school and/or the community, and to assist others enthusiastically whenever called upon to do so.
