Awarded on behalf of a principal investigator , the grant can support projects and shared resources. NIH Extramural Data Book – last update May 2008 Data provided by the Division of Information Services, Reporting Branch AVERAGE AWARD AMOUNT OF SELECT RESEARCH PROJECT GRANTS – R01 Fiscal Year R01 Research Project Grants -- provide support to an institution (domestic or foreign) on behalf of a principal investigator for a project proposed by the investigator. Most NIH research is through the R01. Rarely, such a grant may be awarded directly to an individual. This award is for smaller four year public and private colleges and universities that provide undergraduate training for a significant number of research scientists but have had a limited share of NIH funds. For more information, see the Academic Research Enhancement Awards SOP . RPG’s continue to account for the bulk of NIH research grant awards, although the relative percent has fallen from 82% to 78.7%. NIH Extramural Data Book – last update May 2008 Data provided by the Division of Information Services, Reporting Branch RESEARCH PROJECT GRANT FUNDING AS A PERCENT OF ALL RESEARCH GRANT FUNDING * In FY 1998, RPG’s accounted for 78% of the funds spent on Research Grants. That decreased to 74% in FY 2006. The amount spent on RPG’s rose from $7,662 million to $14,853 million over the same time. In FY 2005, $15,030 was spent for research projects. NIH Extramural Data Book – last update May 2008 Data provided by the Division of Information Services, Reporting Branch NUMBER OF RESEARCH PROJECT GRANTS AWARDED THROUGH SOLICITED RESEARCH * Since FY 1995, the number of RPG awards (competing and non-competing) has risen from 24,364 to 37,401 in FY 2004 before falling to 36,814 in FY 2006. During that time, awards made in response to Requests for Applications (RFA’s) have varied as a proportion of total research projects, from a low of 8.0 percent (FY 1998) to a high of 11.6% (FY 2003). The FY 2006 level was 9.1% NIH Extramural Data Book – last update May 2008 Data provided by the Division of Information Services, Reporting Branch RESEARCH PROJECT GRANTS FUNDED THROUGH SOLICITED RESEARCH Fiscal Year * While the amount spent for Research Project Grants (competing and noncompeting) has risen from $6,152 million in FY 1995 to $14,852 in FY 2006, then amount resulting from responses to Requests for Applications (RFA’s) has risen from $860 million (14% of total RPG) to $2,308 million) (15.5% of RPG total). They are normally defined as R01, R29 and R37. R23 was part of the definition until the activity was discontinued, in the mid 1980’s. In FY 1998, NIH (including NLM) awarded 24,310 R01 equivalent awards, and 33,700 research grants in total. By FY 2006, NIH awarded 29,123 R01 equivalents, and 46,797 research grants. 72.1% of research grants were R01 equivalents in FY 1998, and 62.2% were R01 equivalents in FY 2006. That was a drop from over 61 percent in FY 1998. In FY 1998, NIH (including NLM) awarded $5,993 million in R01 equivalent awards. That amount had increased to $10,685 million in FY 2005 before falling to $10,552 million in FY 2006. Source: RG_Totals_070530_rfm Data provided by the Division of Information Services, Reporting Branch R01 EQUIVALENT GRANTS FUNDED THROUGH SOLICITED RESEARCH Fiscal Year * Solicited research (awards resulting from responses to Requests for Applications – RFA’s) account for a small and decreasing percentage of NIH R01 equivalent (R01, R29, R37) awards. In FY 1995, solicited projects accounted for 7.7% of R01 equivalent awards. IN FY 2006, that percentage was 5.6%. Source: rg_target_070530_rfm Data provided by the Division of Information Services, Reporting Branch RESEARCH CENTER GRANTS * Research Centers are a component of research grants. Research Center grants are awarded to institutions on behalf of program directs and groups of collaborating investigators. They provide support for long-term, multi-disciplinary programs of research and development. Centers may serve as regional or national resources for special research. Centers may support research and development from basic to clinical. Activity codes used to identify research centers include G12, M01, P20, P30, P40, P41, P51, P60, U41, U42 and U54. The National Library of Medicine does not make Center awards.
