Research Program Projects -- provide an institution with support of a multidisciplinary, often long-term research program with an objective or theme involving the organized efforts of groups of investigators. Awarded on behalf of a principal investigator , the grant can support projects and shared resources.

R01
Research Project Grants -- provide support to an institution (domestic or foreign) on behalf of a principal investigator for a project proposed by the investigator. Most NIH research is through the R01. Rarely, such a grant may be awarded directly to an individual.

Academic Research Enhancement Awards -- support scientists at eligible institutions for small-scale, new, or expanded, health-related research projects such as pilot projects and feasibility studies; development, testing, and refinement of research techniques; secondary analysis of available data sets; and similar work showing research capability. This award is for smaller four year public and private colleges and universities that provide undergraduate training for a significant number of research scientists but have had a limited share of NIH funds. For more information, see the Academic Research Enhancement Awards SOP .

Exploratory/Developmental Grants Phase I -- encourage new research in a given program area. Support generally is restricted for level and time. NIAID accepts investigator-initiated applications in response to the parent R21 announcement as well as its own R21 RFAs and PAs . For more information, see the March 2, 2006, Guide notice.

Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) Awards -- provide long-term support to a limited number of investigators who are likely to continue to perform in an outstanding manner. The initial 5-year award may be followed by a 3- to 5-year extension. Awardees are selected by NIH staff and advisors. For more information, see the MERIT Awards and Extensions SOP .

NIH awards more R01 Equivalent Awards (activity codes of R01, R29 and R37) than any other activity group. In FY 1998, NIH (including NLM) awarded 24,310 R01 equivalent awards, and 33,700 research grants in total. By FY 2006, NIH awarded 29,123 R01 equivalents, and 46,797 research grants. 72.1% of research grants were R01 equivalents in FY 1998, and 62.2% were R01 equivalents in FY 2006.

Over half the funds awarded for NIH research grants went to R01 Equivalents in FY 2006. That was a drop from over 61 percent in FY 1998.
In FY 1998, NIH (including NLM) awarded $5,993 million in R01 equivalent awards. That amount had increased to $10,685 million in FY 2005 before falling to $10,552 million in FY 2006.

Solicited research (awards resulting from responses to Requests for Applications – RFA’s) account for a small and decreasing percentage of NIH R01 equivalent (R01, R29, R37) awards. In FY 1995, solicited projects accounted for 7.7% of R01 equivalent awards. IN FY 2006, that percentage was 5.6%.

RESEARCH CENTER GRANTS
*
Research Centers are a component of research grants. Research Center grants are awarded to institutions on behalf of program directs and groups of collaborating investigators. They provide support for long-term, multi-disciplinary programs of research and development. Centers may serve as regional or national resources for special research. Centers may support research and development from basic to clinical.
Activity codes used to identify research centers include G12, M01, P20, P30, P40, P41, P51, P60, U41, U42 and U54. The National Library of Medicine does not make Center awards.
