The Hewitt-Trussville Engineering Academy participates in a project each year with NASA. The program is called HUNCH – High Schools United with NASA to Create Hard-ware. The Engineering students worked on a device that will be utilized for training the ground support personnel and astronauts for the International Space Station. Our students’ task was to simulate a weightless environment for a tilt down rack mechanism that is located at NASA’s facility at Huntsville. The tilt down rack assembly is used on the International Space Station as a universal mounting system for various components such as avionics boxes, exper-iments, and electronics. The tilt down rack has to be lowered to access electrical compo-nents and other hardware from the back. The Engineering Academy students were tasked with the job of making the training rack weight neutral like it would be on the space sta-tion. The High School NASA team installed pneumatic shocks to counterbalance the weight of the rack and the components. Now the rack can be slowly lowered as it would be in space. On Friday, April 24th, the students had the opportunity to demonstrate and present their design to NASA engineers. Students participating in this year’s Hunch Team are: Captain Taylor Herrin, Evan Houston, Bin Tran, AJ Ward, Damon Purdy, and Zack Downing. Here is a video that was played at the presentation as an overview of their project https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzRFZJwx8gM&feature=youtu.be.

Hewitt-Trussville High School is proud to announce the results for our Engineering academy students who competed at the state TSA competition in Tuscaloosa on April 29th and 30th. We are very proud of all of our students and their accomplishments. Congratulations to: Architectural Renovations – students had to update an early 1900’s Sears catalog house. They had to design additions to an existing home to accommodate a family of five. The students had to prepare a very detailed binder documenting all of their design changes to the original homes. Students also had to create a scale model of their updated home. Students had to pre-sent their model to a team of professionals.
1st Place in State – Sarah Bacon and Emma Slay 2nd Place in State – Tyler Toner and Kaleigh Smith 3rd Place in State – Amanda Green, Joseph Williams, and Lucas Reino Career Preparation – students had to prepare for 3 different future careers. Students had to create a resume and cover letters for their future career paths. Then students had to complete a job application and then undergo a professional interview for the job.
3rd Place in State – AJ Ward 5th Place in State – Laurel Martin
Architectural Computer Aided Design – Students had 4 hours to design a small house made from shipping containers. Students had to create an original design and a complete set of drawings. After completing their designs, students had to defend their design to a panel of judges.
1st Place in State – Sarah Bacon 2nd Place in State – Emma Slay
3D Computer Aided Engineering Design – Students had to create a 3D model utilizing the latest engineering software. Stu-dents had 4 hours to create a multi-purpose device for a bicycle that would work as a bike pump and would also house all of the necessary bike repair tools. After completing their designs, students had to defend their design to a panel of judg-es.
1st Place in State – Logan McCormick 2nd Place in State – Emma Burford
Engineering Design – Students had to create a working prototype of an original engineering design. Tyler and Austin created a North-South and East-West tracking solar panel. This solar panel looks at light input in a 4 quad grid and adjusts the panel so that it lines up with the sun.
1st Place in State – Tyler Jackson and Austin Norwood
Essays on Technology – Students were given several news articles concerning the use of drones. Students had to read the articles, and write a paper defending one side of the issue.
1st Place in State – Tyler Toner 4th Place in State – Amanda Green
Extemporaneous Presentation– Students were given a choice of 3 different technology topics. They had only 15 minutes to prepare a 3-5 minute presentation. Students then had to present their topic to a team of judges.

Great Job!
For Alabama’s students, summer is a time of fun, but those months away from school can result in a loss of
knowledge and reading ability. The Summer Learning Challenge raises awareness of the summer loss epidem-
ic, shares compelling research on the importance of personalized reading activities and provides access to a
variety of free resources to support targeted reading and math summer learning.
There are FREE ways to keep students engaged and excited about education:
The Lexile-based “Find a Book, Alabama” tool (Lexile.com/fab/Alabama) offers students over 160,000 books
from which to choose. This book-search tool enables individuals to build custom reading lists based on their
Lexile range and personal interests, and checks the availability of books at the local library. The search tool includes a growing col-
lection of English literary and informational books.
Children, parents and educators can also pledge to read using the “Find a Book, Alabama” tool. We encourage all students to pledge
to read.
The Alabama Summer Learning Challenge also includes a FREE email-based Math skills program for children who have just
completed 2nd through 6th grades. Parents and other summer care-givers can begin registering for the program today. Starting Mon-
day, June 22, parents will begin receiving daily emails with fun activities and resources to help their children retain math skills ac-
quired during the previous school year. After the program ends on Friday, July 31st, parents can print an award certificate to cele-
brate their child's summer accomplishment!
This summer, Stride Academy is FREE to all students in the state from now to August 7. Register at
www.AlabamaSummerStride.com, then log in at http://www.stridegroups.com/start/ to learn and play! Students who regis-
tered for Alabama Summer Stride in previous years will need to create an account for this summer.
Prevent "Summer Slide" with a cool blend of online math, reading and science skills practice, spectacular video games and peer
competitions to pass the lazy summer days. Students may access the Stride Academy learning platform online anytime, 24-
7, on tablets, PCs and Macs. LTS Education Systems offers the Stride Academy game-based learning program used in
many Alabama school districts during and after school hours for fun and personalized learning.
Students who have used Stride Academy during the 2014-15 school year do not have to register again and may continue to use
their assigned login codes throughout the summer. LTS will provide a dedicated Parent Support Line for the Summer
Learning Challenge. Parents can call in to 1-855-382-6528 for help with Stride Academy.
Teachers, be sure to send those student login information home with your students before the end of school!
