NATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAMMES IN INDIA
The Government of India has taken several measures to improve the health of the people prominent among these measures are the national health programmes, which have been launched by the central Government. A brief account of these programmes is as follows.
1. National Malaria Eradication Programme It was launched in India in April 1953. It was based on indoor residual spraying with DDT. This programe includes - Objectives - Reclassification of endemic areas - Areas with API more than 2- Areas with API less than 2- Drug distribution centre and fever treatment depots - Urban malaria scheme - P. Falcifurrum containment - Research - Health education - Reorganization- Surveillance - Active surveillance - Passive Surveillance - Parameters of malaria surveillance - Malaria control through primary health care.

2. National filaria control programme Has been in operation since 1955- Activities - Revised filaria control strategy
3. National Leprosy “Eradication” Programme NLCP has been in operation since 1955- Strategy - Infrastructure - Achievements of National Leprosy Eradication Programme
by march 1999. - Modified leprosy elimination campaign
4. National Tuberculosis Programme This programme launched in 1962- Long term objectives - Short term objectives - Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme
5. National AIDS Control Programme- Blood safety programme - Policy on HIV testing - STD control programme - Condom promotion - HIV suveillance - HIV sentinel suveillance - Inflammation, education, communication & social mobilization. - The national AIDS control programme phase – III

6. National Programme for Control of Blindness - This programme was launched in the year 1976 - Strategy - Infrastructure development
7. Iodine Deficiency disorders (IDD) Programme It started in the year 1962
8. Universal Immunization Programme “Expanded immunization programme was launched in the 1974. - Percentage decline in vaccine preventable disease from
1987-1999.
9. Reproductive and Child Health Programme - Components - Main highlights - Essential obstetric care - Emergency obstetric care - 24 hour delivery services at PHCs / CHCs - Medical termination of pregnancy - Control of RTI and STD - Immunization - Essential newborn care - ORT - Acute respiratory disease control - Prevention and control of vit A deficiencies in children - District survey

10. National Mental Health Programme Was launched during the seventh and eighth five year plan.
11. National Family Welfare Programme This programme was launched in 1952.
12. National Gunea Worm Eradication Programme It was launched in 1984
13. Japanese Encephalitis Control 14. Kala Azar Control Programme 15. Dengue Fever Control
16. National Cancer Control Programme - Scheme for district projects - Development of oncology wings in medical college
hospitals- Scheme for financial assistance to voluntary organization
17. National Diabetes Control 18. Dialhoeal Diseases Control Programme 19. Minimum Needs Programme - Basic principle of MNP
20. 20-Point Programme It was started in 1975
21. National Health policy - It was started in 1983- Elements - Selected goals for health and family welfare in India.
