NationalDesignPolicy
TheNationalDesignPolicywasapprovedbytheGovernmenton8thFebruary,2007.ThedetailsofthePolicy,interalia,include:i.PromotionofIndiandesignthroughawelldefinedandmanagedregulatory,promotionalandinstitutional
framework
ii.
SettingupofspecializedDesignCentresorInnovationHubsforsectorssuchasautomobileandtransportation,
jewellery, leather, soft goods, digital products, toys&
gameswhichwill provide
commonfacilitiesandenablingtoolslikerapidproductdevelopment,highperformancevisualization,etc.alongwithenterpriseincubationaswellasfinancialsupportthroughmechanismslikeventurefunding,loansandmarketdevelopmentassistanceforstartupdesignledventuresandyoungdesignersdesignfirms/houses
iii.FormulationofaschemeforsettingupDesignCentres/InnovationHubsinselectlocations/Industrial
clusters/backwardstates,particularlyintheNorthEast
iv.Layingspecialfocusonupgradationofexistingdesigninstitutesandfacultyresourcestointernationalstandards,particularlytheNationalInstituteofDesign(NID)anditsnewcampuses/centreswithaviewtospreadingqualityeducationindesignstoallregionsofIndia,fourmoreNationalInstitutesofDesignonthepatternofNIDwillbesetupindifferentregionsofthecountryduringthe11thFiveYearPlan.
v.InitiationofactiontoseekDeemedUniversityorUniversityundersection3(f)oftheUniversityGrants
CommissionAct,statusfortheNIDs,sothattheycanawarddegreesofB.Des.andM.Des.insteadofjustDiplomasasatpresent
vi.EncouragingtheestablishmentofdepartmentsofdesigninalltheIndianInstitutesofTechnology(IITs)and
all the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) as well as in
prestigious private sector Colleges
ofEngineeringandArchitecture
vii.Preparationofamechanismforrecognizingandawardingindustryachieversincreatingabrandimagefor
Indiandesigns though theawardof a IndiaDesignMarkondesignswhich
satisfykeydesigncriteria
likeoriginality,innovation,aestheticappeal,usercentricity,ergonomicfeatures,safetyandEcofriendliness
viii.
FacilitatingtheestablishmentofaCharteredSocietyforDesigners(onthelinesoftheInstitutionsof
Engineers,theInstitutionofArchitects,theMedicalCouncil,theBarCouncil,etc.),togoverntheregistrationofDesignProfessionalsandthevariousmattersrelatingtostandardssettingintheprofession
ix.SettingupanIndiaDesignCouncil(IDC)witheminentpersonalitiesdrawnfromdifferentwalksoflife.
InordertodrawupaDetailedActionPlaninpursuanceoftheNationalDesignpolicyaCommitteewasconstitutedwith
representativesofvariousMinistriesandDepartmentswithDirector,NID,AhmedabadasMemberSecretaryon6thMarch2007.ThefinalrecommendationsoftheCommitteeareasunder:
i)ConstitutionoftheDesignCouncilofIndiaii)FormaCharteredSocietyofDesigners.iii)FormaWorkingGroupfornewInstitutesofDesignandstrengtheningofDesignEducation
inExistingInstitutions.iv)ToconductDesignAwarenessProgrammes
