MISSION & VISION“The mission of the National Day of Prayer Task Force is to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture.”

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible.

History of the National Day of Prayer

“Fasting and prayer are religious exercises; the enjoining them an act of discipline. Every religious society has a right to determine for itself the time for these exercises, and the objects proper for them, according to their own particular tenets; and right can never be safer than in their hands, where the Constitution has deposited it.”

– Thomas Jefferson, 1808

Because of the faith of many of our founding fathers, public prayer and national days of prayer have a long-standing and significant history in American tradition. The Supreme Court affirmed the right of state legislatures to open their sessions with prayer in Marsh vs. Chambers (1983).

The National Day of Prayer is a vital part of our heritage. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863. In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.

Significance of the National Day of PrayerThe National Day of Prayer has great significance for us as a nation as it enables us to recall

and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people. The unanimous passage of the bill establishing the National Day of Prayer as an annual event, signifies that prayer is as important to our nation today as it was in the beginning.

Like Thanksgiving or Christmas, this day has become a national observance placed on all Hallmark calendars and observed annually across the nation and in Washington, D.C. Every year, local, state, and federal observances

were held from sunrise in Maine to sunset in Hawaii, uniting Americans from all socio-economic, political and ethnic backgrounds in prayer for our nation. It is estimated that over two million people attended more than 30,000 observances – organized by approximately 40,000 volunteers. At state capitols, county court houses, on the steps of city halls, and in schools, businesses, churches and homes, people stopped their activities and gathered for prayer.

The National Day of Prayer is OursThe National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans. It is a

by Franklin Graham

A PRAYERFOR AMERICALord,We are thankful for the abundant blessings You have bestowed on America. Our forefathers looked to You as Protector, Provider, and the Promise of hope. But we have wandered far from that firm foundation. May we repent for turning our backs on Your faithfulness.

We pray that this great nation will be restored by Your forgiveness.

From bondage, You grant freedom.

Through Your own sacrifice, You offer salvation.

From the state of despair, You offer peace.

From the bounties of Heaven, You have blessed – not because of our goodness – but by Your grace.

You have given us freedom to worship You in spirit and in truth as Your holy Word instructs. May our lives honor You in word and deed. May our nation acknowledge that all good things come from the Father above.

President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that our nation should set apart a day for national prayer to confess our sins and transgressions in sorrow, “yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon… announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”

“We have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our own hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own…

we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God who made us! It behooves us then… to confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.”

Help us to pray earnestly for our president and leaders who govern, that they will humble themselves and seek Your guidance so that everything we do will shine the light of Your glory in a darkened world.

May our prayers as a people and a nation be heard and blessed for such a time as this. We make this plea in faith, believing in the mighty name of Jesus our Lord.

“Choosing a church can seem like a complex and

daunting task. Each faith-based community

is different.”

A church is a group of like-minded people who share a set of beliefs. Its members often feel like a kind of family, offering support, encouragement and assistance to each other.

Church communities worship and learn together. Growing in faith should be one of the goals in attending church services. The right church can provide a foundation for your spiritual life.

When searching a church, pray to God for guidance. Then determine what setting is important to you. Are you looking for a less-formal, more modern church with energetic sermons? Do you need an intimate community or a mega-church?

Do you have a particular faith? If you are a Methodist, Baptist or Lutheran, being surrounded by people with similar beliefs will be important. Or do you prefer a non-denominational church?

Once you understand your needs, conduct some research. Look in your local newspaper, Yellow pages, online or drive around your city.

Ask friends and relatives about the churches they attend. People

are often happy to discuss their experiences with you.

Once you have found some possibilities, visit several churches. Attend services with a positive attitude and ask questions of the members. Gather as much information as you can.

Sometimes having a friend along will help you feel more at ease. Speak to people sitting near you, or speak to the pastor after the service. Take home any literature offered.

Afterward, reflect on your experience. Does the church’s statement of belief match your own beliefs?

Sometimes churches are known for their service to the community. If volunteer work is important to you, find a religious community that has programs for soup kitchens, homeless shelters or even local parks.

Were you comfortable sitting in the church or were you itching to leave? Did the pastor hold your attention or were you bored?

Knowing your values will help you select the right church. Worship and spirituality are deeply personal. Sometimes different family members may attend different churches.

If you feel the presence of God in the church you’ve chosen, then you have made the right decision.

How toCHOOSE ACHURCH

“Knowing your values will help you select the right church.”

Christians make up one of the largest religious

sects of the world.

Christianity has expanded considerably since the religion was established from the teachings of Jesus Christ. According to the Catholic Education Resource Center and information from the International Bulletin of Missionary Research, there were roughly 558 million Christians in the world in 1900.

Currently, there are approximately 2.2 billion Christians. Half of all the world’s Christians are Catholics, while the next largest sect of Christians belongs to denominationally unaffiliated independent churches that boast some 400 million members.

Almost half of all Christians live in the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, or Germany. There are also large groups living in the Philippines, China and Nigeria.

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAOne of our Nation’s great strengths is the freedom we hold dear, including the freedom to exercise our faiths freely. For many Americans,

prayer is an essential act of worship and a daily discipline.

Today and every day, prayers will be said for comfort for those who mourn, healing for those who are sick, protection for those who are in harm’s way, and strength for those who lead. Today and every day,

forgiveness and reconciliation will be sought through prayer. Across our country, Americans give thanks for our many blessings, including the freedom to pray as our consciences dictate.

As we give thanks for our liberties, we must never forget those around

the world, including Americans, who are being held or persecuted because of their convictions. Let us remember all prisoners of conscience today, whatever their faiths or beliefs and wherever they are held. Let us continue to take every action within our power to secure their release. And let us

carry forward our Nation’s tradition of religious liberty, which protects Americans’ rights to pray and to practice our faiths as we see fit.

The Congress, by Public Law 100-307, as amended, has called on the President to issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a “National Day of Prayer.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2014, as a National Day of Prayer. I invite

the citizens of our Nation to give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I join all people of faith in asking for God’s continued guidance, mercy, and protection as we seek a more just world.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.

When we come to God, we must know what the Word of God says regarding the thing we are praying for. We must renew our minds with the Word so that we know God’s will on the matter without a doubt. God’s will is to do for us what He promises in the Word. By meditating on the Word and letting it transform our hearts as we renew our minds in it, we prepare ourselves to pray in faith. If we don’t know what the Word says, there is a good chance that doubt will enter, and if we doubt, we cannot

expect to receive from God (James 1:6-7).

Since God’s Word commands us to give constant attention to the Word and to meditate on it night and day (Proverbs 4:20-22; Joshua 1:8), it is clear that our praying should not be something separate from the Word, but that God’s Word should direct our praying. In prayer, the Word of God should be in our hearts and in our mouths (Romans 10:8). In our prayers we should use the Word of

to that (Daniel 9:2). His prayer acknowledged openly the truth of God’s Word (Daniel 9:10-15). Many other examples could be given. Elijah’s prayer for the heavens to be shut was based on the promise of God to do this if the people turned away from Him to worship idols (Deuteronomy 11:16-17). Fill your mind with the solution from God’s Word, and stop focusing on the problem, which only magnifies fear and doubt.

Charles Spurgeon said, “Mind how you pray. Let it never be a dead formality…plead the promise in a truthful, business-like way. Ask for what you want, because the Lord has promised it. Believe that you have the blessing, and go forth to

your work in full assurance of it. Go from your knees singing, because the promise is fulfilled: thus will your prayer be answered…the strength (not length) of your prayer…wins…God; and the strength of prayer lies in your faith in the promise which you pleaded before the Lord.” •Lance Wubbels

Heavenly Father,

We come to You in the Name that is above every name—Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Our hearts cry out to You. Knowing that You are a prayer-answering, faithful God—the One we trust in times like these—we ask that You renew our spirits, revive our churches, and heal our land. We repent of our sins and ask for Your grace and power to save us. Hear our cry, oh God, and pour out Your Spirit upon us that we may walk in obedience to Your Word. We are desperate for Your tender mercies. We are broken and humbled before You. Forgive us, and in the power of Your great love, lift us up to live in Your righteousness.

We pray for our beloved nation. May we repent and return to You and be a light to the nations. And we pray for our leaders and ask that You give them wisdom and faith to follow You. Preserve and protect us, for You are our refuge and only hope. Deliver us from all fears except to fear You, and may we courageously stand in the Truth that sets us free. We pray with expectant faith and grateful hearts.

In Jesus’ name, our Savior. Amen.

Can You Relate? This morning, I woke up and began reading an article. It talked about two people who knew the same person in different ways. Two different people can know someone in completely different ways and on completely different levels. The article sounded as though they were talking about a different man! This

opened my eyes to something that I’d like to share.

While in the airport, I sat next to a man named Joe who was stressed out about something. When I asked where he was going, he replied, “Paris, then Austria.” I replied, “What have you got to be stressed about! That sounds fun!” Then he said, “I’ve been worried about leaving everything for two weeks. But this is going to be fun. My brothers and I are going with my mother. When she got cancer, her bucket-list included this trip.”

“Wow! I’m sorry, but it’s great that

you are going to get to do this with her!” He went on, “Crazy thing is that she’s in remission now, so it’s a kind of bucket-list/celebratory trip.”

I talked to Joe about my father’s death 3 years ago. After he died, we found a book he was filling out for my son. My sisters and I were in tears! It was as though he was speaking from the grave. What I got most from the book was how little I knew about my father! I got to spend more time with him than anyone but my mother. Still there was so much that I never asked him! I urged Joe, “Don’t take this time for granted! Ask you mother everything you can.

A Personal Prayer Journey by Danny Cahill

Get to know her! Spending time is a great way to get to know her, but really seeking out those things you don’t know about her is important to knowing who she really is!” Joe said he’d do that and we parted ways.

Seek, and Ye Shall RelateI thought I knew what that verse meant. You know the one: “Seek and ye shall find.” (Matt 7:7) I used to equate it only with asking what you wanted or needed from God. I see it from a new perspective after talking to Joe.

Yesterday was my father’s birthday.

He would have been 71 years old. For 20 years, we worked together, we fished and hunted together, he coached my teams, and we lived together for most of that time. Yet I knew so little about him. Why?

I now think I was so obsessed with sharing my feelings with him that I hardly ever paused to hear his. I always told him what I wanted or needed, but never asked him what he wanted or needed. I spent so much time talking and so little time seeking that I missed so much about knowing my father’s heart.

Relationship is All About SeekingIn my walk with God, I’ve spent a lot of time in prayer with Him. But unfortunately, most of that prayer was about what I wanted – what I needed. Doing this is an important part of relationship, but I’ve been missing out on what is really important in my walk with God: knowing His heart, His wants and His needs. You see, I’ve been missing out on the best part of our relationship – my knowing of just who He is.

I know he is my Father. I know He has my best interests at heart. I know that He created me for His purpose. So why wouldn’t I seek exactly who He is?

If I know more about God, I’ll surely know more about what His purpose for me is, right? If I know more about God, I’ll trust that he has my best interests at heart, right? If I know more of just who God is, I won’t have to wait until we meet face to face

to see what he has in store for me. And I don’t want to miss it. I don’t want to lose an opportunity. I want to seek, I want to find, and I want to know; to know God’s heart is the key. And to know God’s heart will take one thing and one thing only: to seek; to ask; to have an honest and open relationship with Him.

True Relationship is Two-Way, Not One-Way. I think I’m going to focus a little more on seeking what I can find out about this wonderful, all powerful being that created me in His image to do something that no one else on earth was called here to do. And I believe if I truly do that, the direction of my life will be forever changed in a direction towards God’s will for me, and not towards my will for my life.

Look out God – here I come!– Danny Cahill

of one early leader, President James Madison:

We’ve staked the whole future of American civilization not on the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of each and all of us … to Govern ourselves according to the commandments of God.

One of the greatest “layperson revivals” in American history occurred in 1857. At that time there were 30,000 men idle on the streets of New York. Drunkenness was rampant, and the nation was divided on slavery. On September 23, 1857, Jeremiah Lanphier, a praying businessman, began a noontime prayer meeting on Fulton Street in the Financial District of Manhattan. Out of a city of one million people, six individuals showed up. However, the crowds grew, day by day, and within three months there were prayer meetings all over the city. More than 50,000 people in New York City alone paused each Wednesday at noon to pray. The prayer revival soon spread across the nation, and in about 18 months, a million people were converted to Jesus Christ.

We believe that God can bring about another great awakening in our nation if we humble ourselves and pray, seek His face and turn from our wicked ways (II Chronicles 7:14). There is still hope for America. That is

why Dr. Jack Graham, our Honorary Chairman, and I are calling for 30-days of fasting and prayer to begin on the National Day of Prayer.

It’s my heartfelt prayer that this year’s theme, Lord, Hear Our Cry, will prompt our fellow citizens to turn to God in reverence and humility. As 1 Kings 8:28 reminds us, “Hear the cry and the prayer your servant is praying in your presence this day.” The Almighty is waiting for Americans to turn back to Him in a posture of prayer and repentance. May we, this day, determine to surrender our ways to Him, giving God the honor He deserves so that, as Psalm 85

states, “His glory may dwell in our land.”

If you can assist us financially during this time of National Prayer, it would be appreciated greatly. And please do plan to participate either locally or in Washington D.C. on May 7th, our nation’s National Day of Prayer.

May God bless you and may God bless America!

Sincerely,Shirley DobsonChairman, NDP Task Force

Lord, Hear Our Cry

The 64th annual National Day of Prayer is fast approaching! On

Thursday, May 7, NDP Task Force volunteers throughout the country will coordinate events where millions of Americans will gather to humble themselves before the Lord – and there are additional untold numbers who will be participating in other ways.

This annual observance powerfully demonstrates the religious freedoms that were secured by our Founding Fathers who recognized that our innate human rights are inexorably tied to our relationship with the Creator.

America’s rich tradition of prayer was established by those who sacrificed to lay the foundation for a government based on the principles in God’s Word. Yet our nation has departed from those solid underpinnings, abandoning our hard-won birthright. We now waver between righteousness and immorality, and this vacillation puts us in great jeopardy. It was quite a scene. The Israelites were at it again. Despite the patient leadership of Moses, the Israelites were on the verge of destroying themselves, forgetting the covenant relationship that Israel entered into

with the Lord at Sinai. (Numbers 16) A rebellious majority formed a leadership alliance of 250 men and approached Moses and Aaron telling them that they had gone too far, that no one should have so much

authority.

Fast forward to a similar situation in America today and voices would be raised, heads would roll. Moses’ response was one of absolute

humility. He fell face down and instructed the people to show up the following day with their incense and incense holders and see who God would accept. The next day the glory of the Lord appeared to everyone

and God told Moses and Aaron to get back so He could, “put an end to them.”

Again, Moses’ response was incredible. He fell face down and cried out to God to save the people, but the damage was done. God caused an earthquake to occur and swallowed up the leaders of the rebellious alliance, their families, and all their belongings. Then fire came out from the Lord and consumed the remaining 250.

You would think that this would have

been enough to convince even the worst skeptics, but just a few verses later the Israelites are back at it, and this time it was worse. Not just a few, but the entire assembly of the Israelites revolted. As they gathered in front of the Tent of Meeting the same thing happened … only with a twist.

God instructed Moses and Aaron to get back so that He could destroy the entire nation, and with that a plague spread out from the Tent of Meeting and began to destroy the Israelites. With no recorded directive

from God, Moses told Aaron to take his censer, incense, and fire from the altar “and hurry to the assembly to make atonement.”

Aaron sprinted from the front of the crowd toward the back as the deadly plague was released over the congregation. In front of him people were gasping, moaning, and dying. Chaos ensued as fear gripped the crowd, and the people began to stampede. As Aaron gained ground toward the edge of death, the scriptures say, “He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.”

There is a plague of death sweeping America today. Will you unite with us in our effort to Get America Praying by mobilizing thousands of additional intercessors to stand in

the GAP between life and death, to help avert judgment and bring Christ’s atonement to this country? The plague of death is quickly progressing over virtually every area of our culture. Now is the time to pray and act with humility and concern for every American.

Join us on the National Day of Prayer and please visit GetAmericaPraying.com to learn how to join this nationwide intercessory effort.

MEET YOUR TEAM!In addition to the staff at the National Day of Prayer (NDP) Headquarters in Colorado Springs, CO, there are thousands of volunteers across the

country who are critical to the NDP prayer mobilization efforts. They are the grassroots of the prayer movement in America.

Last year, more than 43,000 events took place on the National Day of Prayer from coast to coast and in 10 countries around the world. In order to effectively unite millions of people, it takes a network of dedicated volunteer leaders who mobilize 8 regions of the country.

I can do all this through himwho gives me strength.

As mentioned before, there are different forms of prayer. The Holy Spirit wants to lead us into a balance of all these types of prayer.

Worship: [Heb. shachah {shaw-khaw’} = bow down, prostrate oneself]. The true worshiper God seeks worships in spirit and in truth. (John 4:23). God wants

truth in the inner parts (Psalm 51:6). In true worship, there is a total bowing down of the heart to God. In worship we express love and admiration to God which is a response to the revelation of who God is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit. Worship is voluntary submission to the love, the will and the law of God. Any hypocrisy disqualifies us for true worship. In worship we hear the voice of God.

Confession: In confession of sin, we tell God with our mouth our sin. We should specifically tell God what we did, or acknowledge what we failed to do that we should have done. This is necessary to restore communion with God and is a preparation for

further fellowship. In confession of the Word, we tell God with our mouths what He has said in His Word. We express faith and confidence in God and God’s Word verbally, and it releases the blessing of God to us. Very rarely do we rise above the level of our verbal confession before God.Thanksgiving: This is thanking God for what He has done for us. We can thank Him both for blessings seen and those as yet unseen. It is a key to faith and it is natural and right that we give thanks always to the One from whom all good things come. (1 Thessalonians 5:18) Praise: This is declaring good things about God, both about

his character (who he is) and also His actions. To say “God is good” is to praise God. There are many styles of praise. Some are noisy and exuberant, others are calm. Praise is well-expressed through music, singing, words, shouting, clapping, dancing, shouting and giving to God.

Petition: This is asking God for the things we desire. Jesus said, “Ask and you shall receive.” (Matthew 7:7). We are commanded to ask.

Intercession: The ministry of intercession involves all the other types of prayer. However, the emphasis of the

prayer ministry in intercession is the needs of others, and the advancement of God’s interests in the world. It is not focused on praying for things for oneself, but for others.

Waiting: (Habakkuk 2:1). This is a form of prayer in which the soul is silent and waits for God to move it or speak something by His Spirit. God promises to renew the strength of those who wait on Him (Isaiah 40:31; Psalm 27:14). We are to wait patiently on God. Through this we express to God in a practical way – not my will but Yours be done. If we are always talking in prayer we will not be able to

hear what God is saying.

Warfare: (Psalm 149:6-9). This is prayer directed against the powers of darkness. Our praises to God are also a weapon directed against the powers of darkness (demons, fallen angels who are at work in the affairs of the world and the church). We pronounce against them the written judgment by reading the Scriptures of judgment against them (Psalm 149:9), we command them to be bound or to leave their positions of influence or authority in the name of Jesus (Matthew 16:19; Mark 16:17). In “praying for the sick” we should pray

prayers over the bodies of people to be healed in Jesus’ name – seeking the will of God in every situation. This may also be a form of spiritual warfare since it is part of destroying the works of the devil (1 John 3:8; Acts 10:38). Praying in Tongues: (1 Corinthians 14: 2,15; Jude 20) This is a method of prayer available to those baptized in the Holy Spirit through which they can pray the will of God through words given by the Spirit.
