FLORIDA ATTORNEY GENERAL

Dear Friends:

For the 27th time, we gather at this conference to forge a collaborative alliance to identify and understand crime-related issues affecting the black community. By doing so, we dedicate ourselves to the conference’s mission of promoting positive solutions to overcome and eliminate these problems. It touches the lives of adults and young people alike; it strangles the economy of our urban and rural neighborhoods; and it is an insidious threat to the entire American family. Your attendance at this important gathering affi rms your commitment to be part of the solution.

I am confi dent that when you leave here, it will be with an invigorated determination to succeed in making a meaningful contribution to stop the growth of crime in your community, your state, and our country. No domestic challenge is more compelling, and we must all resolve never to surrender our communities and our citizens to crime.

Sincerely,

Page 3: National Conference on Positive Preventing Crimemyfloridalegal.com/webfiles.nsf/WF/KGRG-8TWPHS/$file/2012Confer… · Meeting Room 1 Session K - Lessons From the Battlefi eld: A

Opening RemarksThe Honorable Pam Bondi, Attorney General, State of Florida, is Florida’s 37th Attorney General and fi rst woman to serve in this capacity. She looks forward to sharing her thoughts and priorities about the crime and violence issues we face in Florida and the nation.

OPENING SESSION THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2012

The Honorable Pam BondiFlorida Attorney General

Derrick Brooks, President, FounderDerrick Brooks Charities, Tampa, Florida

DDerriickkk BBrookkks PPres didident FFou ddnder

Keynote SpeakerDerrick Brooks is best known as the powerful and fast linebacker that led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win their fi rst and only Super Bowl, for defensive MVP awards and for numerous Pro-Bowl appearances. Yet Brooks is also known off the fi eld for his work in the Tampa Bay community. With his Brooks Bunch, a group of inner-city children he works with through the Ybor City Boys and Girls Club, Brooks is teaching children the value of education as well as showing them the opportunities and wonders that the world has to offer. Brooks’ charity also houses the state’s Youth Crime Prevention and Intervention and Black-on-Black crime prevention programs. This partnership with the Florida Consortium of Urban Leagues and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, helps protect hundreds of youth and elderly residents in the Tampa area against crime each year. Many people wonder how Brooks can show so much energy and commitment with his accomplishments on the football fi eld, and still give his all to helping people off the fi eld. But as Brooks told ESPN, “That’s who I am. I came here to do a job and be a winner. The Lord has put me in a position to help others, and I would be less than grateful if I didn’t take full advantage of this opportunity.”

MEET THE LUNCHEON SPEAKERS

James M. Evans, Thursday Teen Lunch

How did James Evans discover the power of human worth? He had to overcome life’s challenges as the 17th child of twenty-one children in his family.

The extraordinary story of James Evans’ life is a true testament to the power of understanding human worth! James Evans’ presentations on “The Power of Human Worth” have both touched and turned around the lives of every person who has had the opportunity to listen to his message. And, every person who has the willingness to take the tools of his topic and wield them to create a better life, has unleashed his or her true human potential. Using his own life experiences, James has impacted the quality of life for individuals and entire corporations by explaining the secret and the power of human worth.

MEET THE LUNCHEON SPEAKERS

Darryl Rouson, Friday Adult Lunch

Darryl Rouson is a St. Petersburg, Florida, lawyer, political activist, and Democratic politician who serves as the Florida House representative for District 55. It’s Mr. Rouson’s past, however, that has made him the man he is today. In 1983, he accepted a friend’s offer of cocaine while at a party. He developed an addiction to cocaine that grew at the expense of his reputation, and his life. He lost his law practice, his home, his wife and left St. Petersburg. After some time, he entered recovery through Reverend George Clements in Chicago, and the One Church-One Child program. Rouson became the recovery revival coordinator for that program, helping recovering addicts. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1998 and became active as a leader in the community. He became chairman of the St. Petersburg Area Black Chamber of Commerce, and he served on St. Petersburg’s Charter Review Commission. He headed a substance abuse ministry at Mount Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. In November 2000, he was elected as president of the St. Petersburg Chapter of the NAACP. Under his leadership, the NAACP achieved a number of milestones to help small businesses owned by minorities. Rouson’s activism in the community and his law practice often involve his passions for civil rights and against drug addiction. He now uses this same passion and activism to represent his district and all African-Americans in the Florida Legislature.

Tommy Ford, Friday Teen Lunch

Tommy Ford is best known for his role as “Tommy” on the hit FOX television comedy, “MARTIN.” A Los Angeles native, Tommy graduated from the prestigious Fine Arts Acting Program of USC, and soon after landed his fi rst television role on NBC’s, “A Different World.” Shortly thereafter, he made his feature fi lm debut in Eddie Murphy’s “Harlem Knights.” Whether as an actor, author, producer, director or motivational speaker, Tommy has found success in every endeavor he has chosen to take on.

Despite being blessed with a reputation as an award-winning director and actor, Tommy remains fi rmly grounded and committed to the community. He is founder and president of BE STILL AND KNOW, INC., a non-profi t organization dedicated to building better communities for youth. His love and passion for children and youth led him to author a series of children’s books designed to provide healthy, spiritual and positive principles for daily living. In an effort to spread his message of encouragement and empowerment to children, youth and adults alike, he travels tirelessly as a speaker, motivating audiences in America and abroad.

His dedication to community service has garnered him the Volunteer Recognition Award from the National Conference of Community and Justice, and he has been inducted into Florida’s prestigious “5000 ROLE MODELS PROGRAM.” With a successful career in entertainment that has spanned over 20 years, Tommy remains humble, focused and determined to fulfi ll his purpose of service by living a life full of love, laughter and family.

IN MEMORIUM

Jerry Lamar Wells, age 65, a retired West Palm Beach Police Sergeant, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2012. On behalf of all the staff at the Florida Offi ce of the Attorney General and the National Conference on Preventing Crime in the Black Community family, our most heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends of Sergeant Wells.

Two years ago on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the conference, we began to put together a history of the conference. Everyone that we spoke to acknowledged that an accurate history could not be written without Jerry Wells in it. When the fi rst conference was held in 1986, the sponsor’s intention was for it to be a one-time event. Jerry, however, had other ideas. He approached Attorney General Butterworth,

and committed the West Palm Beach Police Department to host the next conference in their city. Of course, the West Palm Beach Police Department, the City of West Palm Beach and all of Palm Beach County backed up his offer,

and set the pattern that still exists today at the 27th National Conference of a local host for the conference.

Jerry made it a point to attend every conference, until his health prevented him from doing so, attending the fi rst 25 conferences. We will miss him and the strong support he provided. As long as the conference continues, it will be a part of his legacy and he will not be forgotten.
