Third-Place Game, 3:30 p.m. CT Championship, 7:30 p.m. CT (TV: CBS Sports Network) FRIDAYS NOTES/SATURDAY SET-UP While the opening game of the Colorado College at Western Michi- gan series was postponed one day due to weather and travel issues, the other three best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal series did get underway Friday and the home team won all three games, meaning a win Satur- day would advance St. Cloud State, Minnesota Duluth and Denver to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. The home team has won their NCHC Quarterfinal series each of the last three seasons. Since three road teams won Quar- terfinal series in the inaugural NCHC Tournament in 2014, home teams are 15-1 in NCHC Quarterfinal series over the last four seasons. Fourth-seeded No. 8/7 Denver defeated rival No. 19 North Dakota, the No. 5 seed, 2-0, on Friday night. With the win, the Pioneers earned their 20th win of the season, extending their streak of 20-win seasons to 18 straight years, the longest active streak in the country and one of only three programs ever to achieve the feat. The NCAA record for consecu- tive 20-win seasons is held by Michigan, which had 25 from 1987-2012. The Pioneers need one more win this weekend to lock up their sixth consecutive berth in the Frozen Faceoff in six years of the tournament. Denver and North Dakota are the only NCHC teams to make all five Fro- zen Faceoffs to date, meaning the winner of the series will be the lone NCHC team to make all six Frozen Faceoffs in conference history. Denver freshman goaltender Filip Larsson made 32 saves to record his second shutout of the season and of his career in the win over North Dakota. Both DU goals in the win came from unlikely sources as junior forward Tyson McLellan tallied the game-winner, which was only his second goal of the year, both coming in his last six games and both serving as game-winners in shutout victories. Sophomore defenseman Griffin Mendel scored the other goal, which was his first of the season and second of his career. Sophomore forward Nick Swaney scored in overtime to lift second- seeded No. 4/4 Minnesota Duluth to a 2-1 win over No. 7 seed Omaha Friday in Duluth. With a win Saturday, the Bulldogs would lock up their fourth straight trip to the Frozen Faceoff after missing the first two championship weekends in the NCHC’s history. Top-ranked and top-seeded St. Cloud State rolled past Miami, 5-2, on Friday. With the win, the Huskies extended their winning streak to eight games and unbeaten streak to 11 games, the longest active unbeaten streak in the country. SCSU also remained undefeated at home this season with the win, as the Huskies are now 16-0-1 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies and RedHawks split their first two NCHC Quarterfinal series in 2014 and last season. SCSU is looking for its fourth trip to the Frozen Faceoff in NCHC history (2015, 2016 and 2018). Friday’s recaps

While one NCHC Quarterfinal series was postponed Friday night, the other three best-of-three series opened as

scheduled and the home team won all three Game 1s. Top-ranked and top-seeded St. Cloud State rolled past eighth-seed-ed Miami, 5-2, in St. Cloud to remain undefeated at home this season, while pushing their winning streak to eight games and unbeaten streak to 11 games. Second-seeded and fourth-ranked Minnesota Duluth got a much tougher test from No. 7 seed Omaha, but sophomore Nick Swaney scored in overtime to lift the Bulldogs to a 2-1 win at AMSOIL Arena. In Colorado, freshman Filip Larsson recorded his second shutout of the season to backstop fourth-seeded No. 8/7 Denver to a 2-0 win over fifth-seeded No. 19 North Dakota at Magness Arena.

All four NCHC Quarterfinal series will be in action on Saturday, with No. 6 seed Colorado College and third-seeded No. 12/12 Western Michigan getting their best-of-three series underway after Friday’s game was postponed due to severe weather and travel delays. The other three series will play Game 2 Saturday night with SCSU, UMD and Denver all having a chance to book their spot in the 2019 Frozen Faceoff. All four games Saturday can be seen on NCHC.tv.

No. 4/4 MINNESOTA DULUTH 2, OMAHA 1 (OT)

DULUTH, Minn. – Sophomore forward Nick Swaney scored midway through the first overtime period to lift fourth-ranked and second-seeded Minnesota Duluth to a 2-1 win over No. 7 seed Omaha Friday night at AMSOIL Arena in the opening game of their best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal series. Swaney tallied the game-winner 13:42 into the extra session when junior Jade Miller’s shot deflected off an Omaha player’s skate and Swaney slapped it in the net from the inside edge of the left circle. The Bulldogs (22-11-2) nearly recorded a shutout, leading 1-0 with a minute left in regulation, but sophomore forward Kevin Conley knocked in a rebound from the right side with an extra attacker with 56 seconds remaining to force overtime. Junior defenseman Ryan Jones set up the Mavericks’ (9-23-3) tying goal with his blast from the point. After a scoreless first period, UMD junior forward Riley Tufte put the Bulldogs on the board with a wrister from the left circle early in the second stanza for the game’s first goal. UMD finished with a 41-28 edge in shots on goal, including 8-2 in overtime, while both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play. Minnesota Duluth looks to close out the series Saturday night with Game 2 against the Mavericks set for 7:07 p.m. CT, while Omaha aims to extend its season.

No. 8/7 DENVER 2, No. 19 NORTH DAKOTA 0

DENVER – Freshman Filip Larsson pitched a shutout and fourth-seeded No. 8/7 Denver received goals from unlikely sources to top fifth-seeded No. 19 North Dakota, 2-0, Friday night at Magness Arena to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinal series. Junior forward Tyson McLellan opened the scoring for the Pioneers (20-10-5) with a minute left in the first frame when he came charging down the slot and senior for-ward Jarid Lukosevicius found him with a feed from the boards behind the goal for a one-timer. It was only McLellan’s second goal of the season and held as the game-winner. After a score-less second stanza, DU doubled its lead midway through the final frame when sophomore defenseman Griffin Mendel sent in a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and into the net for his first marker of the season. UND (18-16-2) pulled sophomore goalie Peter Thome for an extra attacker over the final 3:37 of the game, but Larson turned aside all 32 shots he faced for his second shutout of the season and career. Despite the loss, North Dakota outshot Denver, 32-17, while both teams went 0-for-2 on the man advantage. The Pioneers can secure a sixth straight trip to the Frozen Faceoff with a win Saturday, while UND looks to force a game 3 on Sunday. Puck drop Satur-day is 7:08 p.m. MT.

No. 1/1 ST. CLOUD STATE 5, MIAMI 2

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Poehling brothers combined for two goals and five points to power top-ranked and top-seeded St. Cloud State to a 5-2 win over No. 8 seed Miami Friday night in game 1 of their NCHC Quarterfinal series at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. With the win, the Huskies (28-4-3) remained unbeaten at home this season, while pushing their unbeaten streak to 11 games. SCSU wasted little time jumping in front as junior Nick Poehling scored off a feed from classmate Jack Ahcan and a second assist to his brother, Jack, only 3:43 into the game. The Huskies then doubled their lead on the pow-er play late in the opening period when senior Robby Jackson found the back of the net. Miami (11-22-4) closed within one midway through the second period when a shot by sophomore defenseman Alec Mahalak redirected off classmate Ben Lown and inside the far post. Junior Ryan Poehling restored the two-goal cushion minutes later, however, burying a shot with assists from his brothers Nick and Jack. A quick strike from MU senior blue liner River Rymsha again brought Miami within one only 24 ticks into the final frame, but Ahcan answered minutes later and sophomore Easton Brodzinski sealed the victory in the closing minutes. SCSU outshot Miami, 37-25, in the win. The Huskies look to secure a trip to the Frozen Faceoff with a win Saturday, while the RedHawks aim to keep their season alive.
