Advanced Applications: Reverse Mortgage Research in Retirement Planning

You will learn the answers to these questions: Can I use a reverse mortgage in estate planning to increase the

legacy to my heirs? Are interest, real estate taxes, or MIP a deduction when paid? Are deductions passable onto

the heirs? What are the best strategies to facilitate maximum Social Security benefits using a reverse mortgage?

Can a reverse mortgage convert countable assets to exempt equity? Does a reverse mortgage line of credit affect

Medicaid eligibility?

This presentation goes over the basics of reverse mortgages and goes into advanced statistics that show how a

reverse mortgage can help prevent seniors from running out of money so quickly. Education is critical as many

people are not aware of all the benefits and new guidelines coming out on reverse mortgages. The advanced

portion of this class gets you thinking and is very interactive; you will be on your seat when we explain the three

milk bucket approach! This topic is as relevant as any others when it comes to estate planning, preserving and

protecting assets, and certainly helping older adults obtain financial independence and peace of mind. This is

something you shouldn’t miss!

Learning Objective: The course will be covering in depth multiple strategies for how a reverse mortgage could

be used for Social Security, Life Insurance, Medicaid, & Long Term Care planning.

Economic Review and Outlook

This presentation will look at our economy from a National perspective as well as from a Virginia perspective.

We will also examine the regional DC and Northern Virginia economy. The impact of the recent disasters around

the country and in the neighboring islands will be reviewed and studied to examine that impact on the economy.

Job growth and real estate trends will be reviewed, as well as recent government actions and policies and their

impact on our economic forecast.

Dear Colleague,

I am reaching out to invite you to the 2019 Diversity Summit hosted by the CFP Board Center for Financial Planning on

November 13, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, in Washington, DC.

The Center is working to create a more diverse and sustainable financial planning profession so that every American

has access to competent and ethical financial planning advice. Last year’s inaugural Diversity Summit was a very

enlightening and energizing experience – you can get a feel for the event in this brief promo video.

This year’s Summit builds upon last year’s convening with a focus on Accountability – highlighting the leadership of

firms, academic institutions and partner organizations to advance racial and ethnic diversity in financial planning. The

agenda will include presentations of case studies and best practices, an executive roundtable and the release of a

comprehensive new report showcasing the value workforce diversity has on business success in financial services.

To see the full agenda and to register, please click here. There is no cost to attend. If you would like to be put on the

Center’s discounted rooming block or have questions about the Summit, please contact Eddy Demirovic,

at [email protected] or 202-379-2253.

I highly recommend the Summit and hope you can attend.

You Feel is Deserving

of One of our Awards for Outstanding Service!

Emerging Leader Award Just Added! We need your votes NOW!

Our Outstanding Membership Awards have been presented to our Outstanding Chapter members since 2001. The criteria for the Leadership Awards were developed in 2003 and refined by subsequent committees. For the past 19 years, these Awards have been presented to the individuals who have been nominated by the members and selected by the Award

Committee. This year, we have added a new Award called the Emerging Leaders Award to recognize new planners for their valuable contributions to our chapter.

In an effort to increase awareness and participation in the Award process, as well as the presentations, we have moved this event to our Winter Symposium beginning in 2015. This year, our Awards will be presented to the winners at our FPA NCA

Winter Symposium on January 24, 2020 at the Tysons Marriott, Tysons Corner, VA.

Please contribute your nominations for our member awards! When nominating individuals for these awards, it is very helpful to tell us in detail why you feel the individual is the right person to receive the award.

Please follow the link below, and nominate someone you feel should be considered for one of our Leadership Awards for Outstanding Service. Nominations must be completed by November 20, 2019 in order to be considered. Award winners will

be announced as soon as possible during December.

Please plan to share in the excitement and honor for these Outstanding Members. Registration for our January 24, 2020 Symposium will be open on our website shortly.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Financial Planning for Cancer Program

Every day families that are battling cancer make dangerous decisions like skipping a chemotherapy appointment so they can afford to feed their families. They often suffer financial distress that adversely impacts their ability to complete treatment and decreases their chance of survival. We are currently seeking volunteers for a new program we have developed in partnership with the Financial Planning Association (FPA) and nonprofit Family Reach to provide cancer patients and their caregivers with financial planning and education to help mitigate the financial risks associated with treatment. If you are a Certified Financial Planning professional (CFP®), then you have the opportunity to serve as a volunteer for our Financial Planning for Cancer program, lending your skills and knowledge to help patients manage their finances so they can focus on getting well. Please see below for a brief FAQ, and if you think you may be interested in volunteering, click here to complete our online intake form. Once you complete the form, you will receive an email outreach from either Rachel Roth at FFP or Kurt Kaczor at FPA, who will provide you with more information about next steps and connect you with our nonprofit partner, Family Reach. If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to Rachel at [email protected] or 202-864-5184. Thank you for considering this important opportunity!
